Chapter 8: The Son I Never Knew
The words didn’t make sense.
Not at first.
They were just sounds.
A sentence someone had spoken.
A cruel sentence.
A confusing sentence.
*“Daniel, you have another son.””*
I stared at Mark.
Waiting for him to laugh.
Waiting for him to admit it was another lie.
But he didn’t.
He just watched me fall apart.
“No.””
The word came out quietly.
Then louder.
“No.””
Emily stepped toward me.
“Daniel…”
I looked at her.
Her face told me everything.
Not the truth.
But that she knew something.
And that was almost worse.
“You knew.””
Emily’s eyes filled with tears.
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
She looked down.
I laughed bitterly.
“When you came back after two years?””
“Daniel…”
“When Noah was five? Ten? Twenty?””
My voice cracked.
“You keep saying you were protecting me.””
Emily reached for my hand.
I stepped away.
The hurt on her face was immediate.
But I couldn’t stop.
I was drowning in questions.
Mark smiled.
“Now you understand.””
I turned toward him.
“You don’t get to enjoy this.””
“Oh, I do.””
His voice was calm.
“Because I spent years watching everyone believe a story that wasn’t true.””
Rachel stepped forward.
“Mark, enough.””
He ignored her.
“Daniel, you think Emily was the only person who disappeared?””
I looked at him.
“What does that mean?””
Emily whispered:
“Stop.””
Mark looked at her.
“You should tell him.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“Then I will.””
He pointed at me.
“Your son wasn’t the only child born from this mess.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who?””
Mark smiled.
“You really don’t know.””
Emily closed her eyes.
“Daniel…”
“Who?””
The room went silent.
Then Emily whispered:
“His name is Ethan.””
I felt the air leave my lungs.
“Ethan?””
She nodded.
“He’s four years old.””
Four.
My mind couldn’t process it.
Four years old.
A child somewhere in the world.
My child.
And I didn’t know.
“How?””
My voice was barely audible.
“How could I not know?””
Emily started crying.
“Because I didn’t know at first.””
I looked at her.
“What does that mean?””
She sat down slowly.
“After the accident, when I woke up, I was confused.””
She looked at Noah.
“I didn’t know how much time had passed.””
She wiped her tears.
“I didn’t know where you were.””
“Because Mark lied to you.””
“Yes.””
She nodded.
“But then I found out I was pregnant.””
The room went still.
“With Ethan?””
Emily nodded.
“I didn’t know until months later.””
My chest tightened.
“And you didn’t come home?””
Her tears fell.
“I tried.””
“Then why didn’t you?””
She looked at Mark.
“Because he threatened me.””
Mark rolled his eyes.
“She always says that.””
Emily ignored him.
“He told me if I came back, he would tell you I had abandoned Noah.””
My jaw tightened.
“He knew I would never believe that.””
Emily nodded.
“He knew.””
“Then why?””
“Because he had proof.””
“What proof?””
She looked at the flash drive in Victoria’s hand.
“Fake documents.””
My eyes moved between them.
“He planned everything.””
Rachel nodded.
“Mark created a story where Emily looked unstable.””
I looked at Emily.
“And you believed I moved on?””
She nodded.
“He showed me pictures.””
My heart hurt.
“Pictures of me and Victoria.””
“Yes.””
“And you believed him?””
Her face broke.
“I was hurt. I was scared. I had just lost everything.””
She looked at Noah.
“I thought you had chosen a new life.””
I swallowed.
“I never stopped looking for you.””
“I know that now.””
The words hurt.
Because we had both lost years.
Years we could never get back.
Mark suddenly laughed.
“You two are unbelievable.””
Everyone looked at him.
“You’re blaming me while pretending you were honest with each other.””
Emily stood.
“You’re sick.””
“No.””
He smiled.
“I’m the only one telling the truth.””
He looked at me.
“Ask her why she didn’t tell you about Ethan.””
I already knew.
But I asked anyway.
“Why?””
Emily looked away.
“Because…”
She stopped.
“Because what?””
“Because I didn’t know if you were safe.””
I frowned.
“What?””
She looked at me.
“I found out Mark wasn’t working alone.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What?””
Emily looked toward Victoria.
“Victoria wasn’t the only person close to you who was involved.””
Everyone froze.
I looked around the room.
“Who?””
Emily shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
Mark smiled.
“Now we’re getting somewhere.””
I stared at him.
“You’re lying.””
“Am I?””
He stepped closer.
“You think Victoria was the only person who betrayed you?””
My phone suddenly buzzed.
Everyone looked at it.
A message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
A photo.
A man standing outside Noah’s daycare.
Watching.
The caption:
*“You should ask his teacher who visits after school.””*
My stomach dropped.
“No.””
Emily looked at the screen.
Her face changed.
“What?””
She recognized something.
“What is it?””
She pointed.
“The watch.””
I looked closer.
The person in the picture was blurry.
But the watch was clear.
A black band.
Silver face.
Emily’s voice shook.
“I’ve seen that watch before.””
“Where?””
She looked at Mark.
“On someone who helped him.””
Mark’s smile faded.
For the first time, he looked worried.
I noticed.
And so did Rachel.
“Who?””
Emily didn’t answer.
She walked toward the window.
Then whispered:
“Someone I trusted.””
I felt my heart sink.
“Who?””
She turned around.
And said:
“Your brother.””
The room went silent.
I stared at her.
“My brother?””
She nodded.
“Michael.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
Emily looked devastated.
“I’m sorry.””
“No.””
I backed away.
“That’s impossible.””
Mark smiled again.
“See?””
He looked at me.
“Everyone you love has been hiding something.””
I looked at Victoria.
Then Emily.
Then Noah.
My entire world felt like it had been built on secrets.
My phone buzzed again.
Another message.
This time, there was no photo.
Just words.
*“Come alone if you want to meet Ethan.””*
My blood froze.
Then another message appeared.
*“Bring the flash drive.””*
I looked at Victoria.
She understood immediately.
“They know about it.””
Emily grabbed my arm.
“Daniel, don’t go.””
“But Ethan…”
Her grip tightened.
“He wants you to react.””
“What if Ethan is really there?””
Emily went silent.
Because that was the one thing she couldn’t risk.
Rachel stepped closer.
“We need a plan.””
I looked at the message.
Then at my son.
Then at Emily.
The woman I lost.
The children I never knew existed.
The people who lied.
The people who might still be lying.
And then Noah walked toward me.
He held up his broken hearing aid.
“Daddy.””
I knelt down.
“What is it?””
He pointed at the tiny blinking light.
The recorder.
The device that started everything.
Then he whispered:
“I heard Uncle Michael.””
My blood ran cold.
“What did you hear?””
Noah looked toward the door.
“He said…”
May you like
The little boy swallowed.
“He said Mommy was never supposed to come back.””
