Chapter 4: The Secret Buried With Emily

For two years, I imagined the moment I would see Emily again.

I imagined running toward her.

I imagined holding her so tightly that neither of us would ever let go.

I imagined asking where she had been, why she left, and why she made me believe she was gone forever.

But I never imagined standing in my own living room while my wife looked at me with tears in her eyes and whispered:

“She was after Noah.””

The words destroyed every other thought in my head.

I looked at Victoria.

She looked like someone who had just watched a locked door open.

A door she spent years trying to keep closed.

“No,” Victoria whispered.

Emily held Noah tightly.

My son’s small arms were wrapped around her neck.

He was crying.

Not the frightened crying from earlier.

Something different.

Something I had never heard before.

Relief.

“Mommy,” he kept saying.

Over and over.

Like he was afraid if he stopped saying it, she would disappear again.

Emily buried her face in his hair.

“I’m here.””

Her voice broke.

“I’m so sorry, baby.””

I stood frozen.

My wife was alive.

My son had his mother back.

But the woman standing across the room had just become a threat.

I stepped between Victoria and my family.

“Start talking.””

Victoria shook her head.

“Daniel, it’s not what you think.””

Emily looked at her.

And the pain in Emily’s eyes was replaced by something colder.

“You always say that.””

Victoria’s jaw tightened.

“You don’t know what happened.””

“I know enough.””

“No, you don’t.””

Emily stood slowly, keeping one hand on Noah’s shoulder.

“You know what I remember?””

Victoria didn’t answer.

“I remember waking up in that hospital room and seeing you standing beside my bed.””

My stomach tightened.

Emily looked at me.

“She was there, Daniel.””

I felt sick.

“Why?””

Emily’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because she wanted to know if I remembered.””

“Remembered what?””

She looked at Victoria.

“The accident.””

The room became silent.

I looked at Emily.

“You said it was an accident.””

“It was.””

“Then why were you afraid?””

Emily looked down at Noah.

“Because the accident wasn’t meant to kill me.””

My heartbeat became louder.

“What does that mean?””

Rachel closed the door behind her.

“I think it’s time he knows everything.””

Emily nodded.

She looked exhausted.

Like she had carried this secret alone for years.

“Before the accident, I found out something about Victoria.””

Victoria immediately stepped forward.

“Stop.””

Emily ignored her.

“I found out she had been following my life for months.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“Following?””

Emily nodded.

“She knew where I went. She knew Noah’s schedule. She knew things about our family that I never told her.””

Victoria laughed nervously.

“That’s ridiculous.””

Emily looked at her.

“Is it?””

She reached into her bag.

And pulled out a small notebook.

My chest tightened.

I recognized it.

It was Emily’s.

She used to write everything down.

Grocery lists.

Appointments.

Thoughts.

Memories.

“I found this in my hospital belongings.””

Emily opened it.

Several pages were marked.

“She thought I didn’t know.””

I looked at the handwriting.

Emily’s handwriting.

One sentence had been circled.

*Victoria knows about Noah’s condition. She asked questions she shouldn’t know to ask.*

I looked at Victoria.

She didn’t deny it.

That scared me more than anything.

“Why were you asking about my son?””

Victoria’s eyes moved around the room.

“I was trying to help.””

“Help?””

Emily laughed quietly.

A painful laugh.

“You asked my doctor whether Noah would be easier to control because of his hearing problems.””

The color disappeared from my face.

I looked at Victoria.

“That’s a lie.””

Victoria’s voice rose.

“It is.””

Emily looked at her.

“Then why did you say it?””

Victoria froze.

Because she knew.

Everyone knew.

She had said something.

Something she couldn’t take back.

Noah suddenly covered his ears.

The argument was too loud.

I immediately lowered my voice.

“Sorry, buddy.””

I knelt beside him.

Emily watched me.

Her expression broke.

“I missed that.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“Seeing you protect him.””

Her voice shook.

“I missed so much.””

I wanted to forgive her.

I wanted answers.

I wanted to understand how the woman I loved disappeared and came back with another child.

But there was one question burning inside me.

“Why didn’t you come home?””

Emily closed her eyes.

The question hurt her.

“I tried.””

“Then why?””

“Because Victoria made sure I couldn’t.””

Victoria shook her head.

“No.””

Emily looked at me.

“The night I woke up, Victoria told me you knew I was dead.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

“She told me you had already buried me.””

“That’s impossible.””

Emily nodded.

“That’s what I thought.””

She looked at Rachel.

Rachel stepped forward.

“She convinced Emily that returning would destroy Daniel’s life.””

I stared at Victoria.

“You lied to my wife.””

Victoria’s eyes filled with tears.

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

She looked at Emily.

“Her.””

Emily’s expression hardened.

“Why?””

Victoria’s hands trembled.

“Because she knew.””

“Knew what?””

Victoria looked at me.

Then at Noah.

And for a second, she looked genuinely afraid.

“She knew about Lucas.””

The name hit the room.

Emily looked down.

My son looked confused.

I felt anger rising again.

“What about Lucas?””

Emily took a slow breath.

“Lucas wasn’t the only secret.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Emily walked toward the table.

She placed another photograph down.

A picture of Victoria.

But not with Emily.

With someone else.

A man.

I didn’t recognize him.

“Who is that?””

Emily looked at Victoria.

“Ask her.””

Victoria closed her eyes.

“Daniel…”

“Who is he?””

No answer.

Emily spoke quietly.

“His name is Mark.””

I waited.

Nothing.

Then she added:

“He was Victoria’s husband.””

My entire body went still.

“What?””

Victoria whispered:

“He’s dead.””

Emily shook her head.

“No, he isn’t.””

The room froze.

Rachel looked at me.

“I found records.””

Emily continued.

“Victoria told everyone Mark died years ago.””

My voice was barely audible.

“And?””

Emily looked at me.

“And Mark is the reason she came into your life.””

I stared at Victoria.

The woman who had planned our wedding.

The woman who had slept beside me.

The woman who had comforted my son.

“Why?””

Emily looked toward Noah.

“Because Mark believes Noah belongs to him.””

My blood turned cold.

“No.””

Emily nodded.

“He has been searching for Noah.””

I stepped closer.

“Why would he think that?””

Emily’s eyes filled with fear.

“Because before the accident…”

She paused.

“Someone changed Noah’s medical records.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

Emily looked at the broken hearing aid sitting on the table.

“That’s why I needed you to hear the truth.””

I looked at Noah.

Then at Emily.

“Tell me.””

She took my hand.

Her fingers were shaking.

“Daniel…”

A phone suddenly rang.

Everyone froze.

Not mine.

Not Emily’s.

Victoria’s.

The screen lit up on the table.

One name appeared.

*MARK.*

Victoria stared at it.

Emily whispered:

“He knows I’m back.””

The phone kept ringing.

Victoria didn’t move.

Then a message appeared.

One sentence.

May you like

And when I read it, every piece of my life shattered.

*“You failed. Take Noah tonight, or I tell Daniel what you did.””*
