Chapter 1 - The Storage Room Behind The MansionI used to believe that marrying Daniel meant I had finally found a family.

I was wrong.
I had found a battlefield.
A beautiful mansion.
A powerful family name.
A husband who loved me.
And a mother-in-law who believed someone like me did not deserve any of it.
Her name was Evelyn Carter.
To the outside world, she was elegant.
Perfect.
The kind of woman people admired.
She wore expensive dresses, hosted charity events, and smiled for cameras.
But inside that mansion…
She was different.
She never accepted me.
Not once.
From the day Daniel introduced me, she looked at me like I was something he had brought home by mistake.
A poor girl from a small town.
A woman without a famous family.
Without money.
Without connections.
“You don’t understand how this family works,” Evelyn told me during our first dinner together.
I smiled politely.
“I’m willing to learn.”
She looked at my simple dress.
Then at her diamond necklace.
“No.”
Her voice was cold.
“You’re willing to pretend.”
I still remembered that moment.
Because everyone at the table laughed.
Everyone except Daniel.
He reached for my hand.
“Mom, stop.”
Evelyn smiled.
“Oh, Daniel.”
“You always were too easy to manipulate.”
I thought she was just being difficult.
I thought time would change her.
I thought when she saw how much I loved Daniel, she would eventually accept me.
I was wrong.
She hated me more every day.
And after I became pregnant…
That hatred became dangerous.
Six months pregnant.
That was when everything changed.
Daniel was preparing for a major business trip.
His company was expanding overseas, and he needed to spend two weeks meeting investors.
“I don’t like leaving you alone,” he told me while packing his suitcase.
I smiled.
“I won’t be alone.”
I touched my stomach.
“Our baby will keep me company.”
He smiled.
The kind of smile that reminded me why I married him.
“You know I love you, right?”
I nodded.
“I know.”
He kissed my forehead.
“And I’ll be back Friday.”
I hugged him.
“Promise?”
“Promise.”
Before leaving, he checked the security system.
Daniel had installed cameras around the mansion months earlier.
“Just for safety,” he told me.
I never thought those cameras would become the only thing that saved me.
The first few days after Daniel left were quiet.
Too quiet.
Evelyn barely spoke to me.
Anna, Daniel’s younger sister, avoided me.
But I could feel something was wrong.
People who hate you are sometimes more frightening when they become silent.
On Thursday night…
The night before Daniel was supposed to return…
I was lying in bed when I heard a knock.
I assumed it was a housekeeper.
“Come in.”
The door opened.
Evelyn walked inside.
Behind her was Anna.
My stomach immediately tightened.
Something about their faces felt wrong.
“What happened?”
Evelyn closed the door.
“You need to pack your things.”
I stared at her.
“What?”
Anna smiled.
“You heard her.”
I slowly sat up.
“Daniel will be home tomorrow.”
Evelyn crossed her arms.
“That’s why you need to leave tonight.”
I thought I misunderstood.
“Leave?”
“Yes.”
“Where would I go?”
Evelyn shrugged.
“That is no longer my concern.”
I looked at Anna.
She was enjoying this.
“You can’t do this.”
Anna laughed.
“Actually, we can.”
I stood carefully.
My pregnancy made every movement slower.
“Daniel would never allow this.”
Evelyn’s expression changed.
“You still think my son chooses you over his family?”
I didn’t answer.
Because deep down…
That was exactly what she wanted me to question.
Anna stepped closer.
“You know what your problem is?”
I backed away.
“You think love makes you equal.”
Her words hurt.
But I refused to show it.
“Daniel loves me.”
Evelyn smiled.
“Daniel feels responsible for you.”
She looked at my stomach.
“That baby is the only reason he hasn’t realized his mistake.”
My hands went to my belly.
“Don’t talk about my child.”
Evelyn’s eyes became colder.
“Your child.”
She repeated.
“Everything you have came from my son.”
I moved toward the door.
“I’m calling Daniel.”
That was when Anna pushed the door shut.
My heart started racing.
“Move.”
She didn’t.
Evelyn stepped closer.
“Your husband doesn’t need to hear your lies.”
“My lies?”
“Yes.”
She smiled.
“By tomorrow, Daniel will believe you left.”
I stared at her.
“You’re insane.”
That was the moment her fake kindness disappeared.
She grabbed my wrist.
Hard.
“Watch your mouth.”
I pulled away.
“Let go of me!”
Anna grabbed my other arm.
Panic rushed through me.
“I’m pregnant!”
Neither of them cared.
“Please!”
My voice shook.
“Think about the baby.”
Evelyn looked at me.
“You should have thought about that before trapping my son.”
They dragged me into the hallway.
I fought.
I cried.
I begged.
But nobody came.
The mansion that always felt so large suddenly felt empty.
They pulled me toward the back of the house.
Toward an old storage room nobody used anymore.
“Daniel will find out!”
I screamed.
Anna laughed.
“No, he won’t.”
Evelyn opened the door.
“He thinks you’re resting upstairs.”
My blood went cold.
They had already planned the lie.
Anna pulled out a piece of cloth rope.
My heart stopped.
“No.”
I stepped back.
“No, please.”
Evelyn looked at me without emotion.
“You need to learn your place.”
The last thing I remember before the door closed…
Was Anna tying my wrists.
Was Evelyn taking my phone.
Was the lock turning from the outside.
“You can stay here until you understand.”
Then darkness.
The storage room smelled like old wood.
Boxes surrounded me.
No windows.
No way out.
My wrists hurt.
My baby moved inside me.
And for the first time…
I truly felt afraid.
Not for myself.
For my child.
I tried screaming.
Nobody came.
I kicked the door.
I hit the walls.
Nothing.
Hours passed.
Then I heard something.
A car.
My heart stopped.
Daniel.
I heard the front door open.
“Emily?”
My eyes filled with tears.
I crawled toward the door.
“Daniel!”
But my voice was weak.
Too weak.
I heard footsteps.
His suitcase rolling across the marble floor.
“Emily?”
Evelyn answered.
“She’s upstairs.”
A pause.
“She hasn’t been feeling well.”
Silence.
Then Daniel said:
“I’ll check on her.”
My heart broke.
Because he didn’t know.
He was inside the house.
Only a few meters away.
But I was trapped.
Then suddenly…
The house became quiet.
Minutes passed.
Then I heard Evelyn scream.
A scream full of fear.
Not anger.
Fear.
The lock on the storage room shook.
The door suddenly opened.
Daniel stood there.
His face was pale.
His eyes were full of shock.
“Emily…”
I started crying.
He dropped to his knees.
“I’m here.”
His hands shook as he untied me.
“I’m so sorry.”
I grabbed his shirt.
“Daniel…”
“I know.”
His voice broke.
“I know what they did.”
Then he looked behind me.
At the shelf.
At the envelopes sitting there.
My name was written on them.
He picked one up.
And his entire expression changed.
“What are these?”
I looked at the envelope.
Bank statements.
Letters.
Documents.
Daniel opened one.
Then another.
His face became darker.
“Emily…”
“What?”
He looked at me.
“The money.”
I didn’t understand.
“What money?”
“The money I sent you every month.”
My heart sank.
“I never received anything.”
Daniel froze.
“What?”
He opened his laptop.
Checked the security footage.
And then we saw it.
Evelyn taking my mail.
Anna using my bank card.
Money transfers.
Messages.
Everything.
Daniel slowly stood.
His expression was no longer sadness.
It was rage.
Then he saw the final transaction.
The largest one.
A hidden account.
Not Anna’s.
Not Evelyn’s.
Someone else’s.
Someone whose name made him stop breathing.
A name he had not heard since childhood.
A woman Evelyn always claimed was dead.
Daniel whispered:
“No…”
I looked at him.
“Who is she?”
He stared at the screen.
And answered:
“My mother.”
The room went silent.
Because Daniel’s mother was supposed to have died the day he was born.
But someone had been receiving money in her name for years.
And the person who knew the truth…
Was the woman standing upstairs.
May you like
His own mother.
