Chapter 7 - The Woman Behind Evelyn’s EmpireThe woman standing in our living room looked familiar.

Not because I had met her before.

Because I had seen her name.

In the documents.

In the financial records.

In the hidden files Evelyn kept.

Her name was Clara.

And she was Evelyn’s closest friend for thirty years.

Daniel stared.

“How did you get in here?”

Clara smiled.

“Your mother taught me a lot about this house.”

The room went cold.

Daniel stepped forward.

“My mother?”

Clara nodded.

“Margaret.”

Margaret looked confused.

“I never knew you.”

Clara smiled.

“You did.”

A pause.

“Before Evelyn changed everything.”

Nobody understood.

Until Clara placed an old photograph on the table.

It showed three women.

Margaret.

Evelyn.

And Clara.

Together.

Friends.

Before everything went wrong.

Daniel looked at the picture.

“What happened?”

Clara sighed.

“Evelyn wasn’t born cruel.”

Margaret looked away.

“She became that way.”

Clara nodded.

“Because she wanted something she could never have.”

Daniel asked:

“What?”

Clara looked at him.

“Your family.”

Silence.

“She wanted the Carter name.”

She looked around the mansion.

“The power.”

“The money.”

“The respect.”

A pause.

“But most importantly…”

She looked at Daniel.

“She wanted to prove she could replace anyone.”

My stomach tightened.

Because that was exactly what she tried to do to me.

Replace my place.

Replace my family.

Replace my identity.

Clara continued.

“She planned everything years before you met Emily.”

Daniel frowned.

“What?”

“She studied your family.”

Margaret looked shocked.

“She knew about me?”

Clara nodded.

“She knew everyone.”

Then Clara revealed the final secret.

“The reason Evelyn hated Emily so much…”

She looked at me.

“Was because Daniel chose you.”

I didn’t understand.

Clara continued.

“Evelyn could control people who needed her.”

A pause.

“But Emily never needed her.”

Daniel looked at me.

“And that made her dangerous.”

Clara nodded.

“She knew you would eventually expose her.”

The room became silent.

Then Daniel asked:

“Why are you telling us this?”

Clara smiled sadly.

“Because Evelyn betrayed me too.”

Everyone froze.

“She promised me part of the company.”

A bitter laugh.

“She promised everyone something.”

Daniel looked at the evidence.

“And now?”

Clara looked toward the door.

“Now she is coming back.”

My blood ran cold.

“What?”

Clara whispered:

“She escaped.”

Nobody moved.

Daniel immediately grabbed his phone.

A message appeared.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

“You took everything from me.”

Another message arrived.

“She took my son.”

Daniel’s face changed.

The final message appeared.

“And now I’m taking yours.”

I looked at my stomach.

At our unborn child.

Daniel immediately stepped in front of me.

Because we both understood.

Evelyn wasn’t finished.

She wasn’t running.

May you like

She was coming for the only thing she had failed to control.

Our family.
