Chapter 2 - The Mother Everyone Thought Was Dead

Daniel didn’t move.

He just stared at the computer screen.

The account information was still there.

The name.

The date.

The impossible truth.

A woman named Margaret Carter had been receiving money from an account Daniel created for his family.

His mother.

The woman Evelyn told him had died before he was old enough to remember her.

I watched his face change.

Shock.

Confusion.

Pain.

All at once.

“Daniel?”

He didn’t answer.

His fingers moved slowly across the keyboard.

Like he was afraid touching the screen would make the truth disappear.

“Daniel, who is she?”

His voice was barely a whisper.

“My mother.”

I froze.

“But…”

He looked at me.

“She’s dead.”

The words sounded strange.

Not because I didn’t believe him.

Because I could hear the pain behind them.

For thirty years, Daniel had lived believing he lost his mother before he could know her.

And now…

Her name had appeared inside a secret account controlled by the same woman who locked his pregnant wife in a storage room.

I touched his arm.

“Maybe there’s an explanation.”

He looked at me.

“Emily.”

His voice broke.

“My mother died when I was born.”

I stayed quiet.

“My father told me.”

He swallowed.

“And Evelyn was the only person who ever talked about her.”

I looked at him.

“What did she say?”

Daniel looked away.

“That my mother was sick.”

A pause.

“That she couldn’t handle being a wife.”

Another pause.

“That she left.”

My heart sank.

The same story.

Another woman.

Another lie.

Evelyn didn’t just destroy my life.

She had been rewriting Daniel’s entire life for decades.

Daniel stood.

His expression changed.

“I need to talk to her.”

I grabbed his hand.

“Daniel…”

“No.”

He looked toward the door.

“She locked my pregnant wife in a room.”

His jaw tightened.

“She stole money from you.”

He looked back at the computer.

“And now I find out she lied about my mother.”

His voice became colder.

“I need answers.”

When we entered the living room, Evelyn was sitting calmly on the sofa.

Like nothing happened.

Like she hadn’t just been exposed.

Anna was beside her.

Both of them looked confident.

Until they saw Daniel’s face.

Then Evelyn knew.

Something had changed.

“You found her.”

Daniel’s expression froze.

My heart dropped.

She didn’t even ask.

She already knew.

“Who?”

Daniel stepped closer.

“My mother.”

Anna looked nervous.

Evelyn remained silent.

That silence answered everything.

Daniel laughed softly.

A painful laugh.

“You knew.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“Daniel…”

“No.”

His voice shook.

“You knew she was alive.”

I saw the color disappear from Evelyn’s face.

Anna immediately stood.

“Mom?”

Daniel looked between them.

“My whole life.”

His eyes filled with anger.

“My whole life you let me believe my mother abandoned me.”

Evelyn sighed.

“You were a child.”

“That’s your excuse?”

“I was protecting you.”

Daniel stared at her.

“Protecting me from what?”

Evelyn looked away.

“From the truth.”

“What truth?”

She didn’t answer.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Where is she?”

Silence.

“Where is my mother?”

Evelyn finally looked at him.

And the answer destroyed him.

“She’s alive.”

My hand covered my mouth.

Even though we already knew.

Hearing her admit it made everything real.

Daniel stepped back.

Thirty years.

A lifetime of believing a lie.

“Why?”

Evelyn looked angry now.

Not guilty.

Angry.

“Because she wasn’t good enough for this family.”

Daniel froze.

“What?”

“She was weak.”

Evelyn’s voice became cold.

“She had no money. No power. No ambition.”

Daniel stared at her.

“She was your wife.”

Evelyn shrugged.

“I saved you.”

“No.”

His voice became louder.

“You stole my mother.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“She left willingly.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

He pointed toward the computer.

“She didn’t.”

The room went silent.

“She was receiving money.”

Evelyn’s face changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

“You took money from me.”

Anna looked nervous.

Daniel turned toward her.

“And you helped.”

Anna immediately looked away.

“Daniel…”

“No.”

He stepped back.

“I don’t know who either of you are anymore.”

Evelyn stood.

“You’re letting this woman turn you against your family.”

My anger rose.

I stepped forward.

“This woman?”

Evelyn looked at me.

“You came into this house with nothing.”

I laughed.

A small, broken laugh.

“I came here as your son’s wife.”

“You came here because you wanted his money.”

Daniel immediately turned.

“Enough.”

Evelyn stopped.

“You will not speak to her like that.”

For the first time…

Daniel chose me.

Not his mother.

Me.

That night, Daniel stayed awake.

So did I.

We sat in the bedroom.

The same bedroom where Evelyn had tried to remove me from my own life.

“I’m sorry.”

Daniel looked at me.

“For what?”

“For not seeing it.”

I shook my head.

“Daniel…”

“No.”

His eyes filled with regret.

“She hated you from the beginning.”

He looked down.

“And I kept telling you to be patient.”

I reached for his hand.

“You loved your mother.”

He looked at me.

“I didn’t know I was fighting a ghost.”

That sentence stayed with me.

Because it was true.

Evelyn had created a ghost.

A woman who supposedly abandoned him.

A woman who supposedly didn’t care.

But somewhere…

She was alive.

And waiting.

The next morning, Daniel made one phone call.

A private investigator.

By afternoon, we had a location.

A small town three hours away.

A woman named Margaret Carter lived there.

Quietly.

Alone.

No social media.

No public records.

Like someone had spent years hiding her.

Daniel looked at the address.

“I’m going.”

I looked at him.

“I’m coming too.”

He shook his head.

“You need rest.”

I smiled sadly.

“Daniel.”

I placed my hand on my stomach.

“We already survived your mother locking me away.”

I looked at him.

“I’m not staying behind while you find yours.”

For the first time in days…

He smiled.

A small smile.

“Okay.”

Three hours later, we arrived at a small blue house.

Nothing like the Carter mansion.

No marble.

No expensive decorations.

Just a quiet home.

Daniel stood at the door.

His hand shook.

I had never seen him nervous before.

Not during business meetings.

Not during arguments.

Not even when he discovered his family betrayed him.

But now…

He was afraid.

Because this wasn’t about money.

This was about a little boy who spent his entire life missing his mother.

He knocked.

No answer.

He knocked again.

Then the door opened.

An older woman stood there.

Gray hair.

Tired eyes.

She looked at Daniel.

And immediately covered her mouth.

“Daniel?”

His entire body froze.

She knew him.

The woman’s eyes filled with tears.

“My baby.”

Daniel couldn’t move.

Neither could I.

Because in one second…

Thirty years of lies collapsed.

He whispered:

“You’re alive.”

The woman cried.

“Yes.”

She touched his face.

“I never stopped looking for you.”

Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.

“Then why didn’t you come?”

The woman looked terrified.

And then she whispered:

“Because Evelyn told me if I came near you…”

She stopped.

Daniel stepped closer.

“What?”

Her voice broke.

“She would destroy you.”

Silence.

Then she said the words that changed everything.

“Your mother didn’t die, Daniel.”

May you like

A pause.

“She disappeared because Evelyn made sure nobody would ever find her.”
