Chapter 8 - The Last Thing Evelyn Wanted To Steal

After the message arrived, Daniel changed.

Not into someone cruel.

Not into someone angry.

Into someone who finally understood the danger.

For years, Evelyn had survived because people underestimated her.

They thought she was just controlling.

Just difficult.

Just a woman who wanted everything her way.

But the truth was much darker.

Evelyn didn’t simply want power.

She wanted ownership.

She believed people were possessions.

Things she could take.

Things she could replace.

And now…

She wanted our child.

That night, Daniel refused to leave my side.

Every security camera was checked.

Every door was locked.

Every entrance was monitored.

But even with all the protection around us…

I could feel something was wrong.

Because Evelyn had spent decades planning.

She always had another move.

“I’m scared.”

I finally admitted.

Daniel looked at me.

I hated saying it.

Because I wanted to be strong.

But I was six months pregnant.

I had already been dragged from my room.

Locked away.

Humiliated.

I didn’t know how much more I could handle.

Daniel took my hand.

“I’m sorry.”

I shook my head.

“This isn’t your fault.”

He looked at me.

“It is.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

His eyes filled with regret.

“I brought you into this family.”

I squeezed his hand.

“You didn’t bring me into a family.”

I looked at him.

“You brought me into your life.”

A small smile appeared.

And for a moment…

We forgot about Evelyn.

The next morning, Richard arrived with more documents.

He looked exhausted.

“I found something.”

Daniel looked at him.

“What?”

Richard placed an old journal on the table.

“This belonged to Evelyn.”

Everyone became silent.

“How did you get this?”

Richard looked away.

“She gave it to me years ago.”

Daniel frowned.

“Why?”

“Because she trusted me.”

A pause.

“Before I discovered what she really was.”

Daniel opened the journal.

The first pages were normal.

Plans.

Business notes.

Family information.

Then the entries changed.

The handwriting became darker.

More obsessive.

One sentence made Daniel stop.

“She wrote about me.”

He turned the journal around.

The line read:

“Daniel is not my son by blood, but he is the only thing that matters.”

Everyone froze.

“What?”

Richard looked shocked.

Margaret covered her mouth.

Daniel stared.

“She knew?”

Richard nodded slowly.

“She knew before anyone else.”

My heart raced.

“Daniel isn’t…”

Richard interrupted.

“Biologically, Daniel was not my child.”

Silence.

The room stopped.

Daniel looked like the world had disappeared beneath him.

“What are you saying?”

Richard looked heartbroken.

“Your mother was pregnant before she met me.”

Margaret started crying.

“But Richard loved him like his own.”

Richard nodded.

“From the moment I held you, you were my son.”

Daniel looked away.

Another truth.

Another identity.

Another piece of his life that had been hidden.

But then he looked at Richard.

“You were still my father.”

Richard cried.

“Yes.”

Daniel hugged him.

And that was the moment I understood.

Family wasn’t blood.

Family was who stayed.

Who protected you.

Who chose you.

Then Daniel noticed another page.

A page Evelyn wrote years later.

His face changed.

“What?”

He read aloud.

“She knows.”

Everyone looked at him.

“Who?”

Daniel continued.

“Emily knows the truth about Daniel.”

I froze.

“What does that mean?”

Richard took the journal.

Then his face changed.

“This was written recently.”

A chill went through me.

“Recently?”

Richard nodded.

“Evelyn has been watching this family.”

The journal continued.

“She married Emily’s husband because she knew Daniel would be vulnerable.”

My stomach tightened.

“She wanted revenge.”

“Against who?”

Richard looked at me.

“You.”

That evening, Evelyn contacted us.

Not through a message.

Not through a threat.

Through a video call.

Her face appeared on the screen.

She looked calm.

Almost happy.

“Hello, Daniel.”

Nobody answered.

She smiled.

“You found everything.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“You hurt my wife.”

Evelyn tilted her head.

“I improved your life.”

His expression hardened.

“No.”

“You don’t understand.”

She smiled.

“Without me, you would have nothing.”

Daniel laughed.

A cold laugh.

“You stole my entire life.”

Evelyn looked at me.

“And now you think she will save you?”

I stepped forward.

“She already did.”

For the first time…

Evelyn looked angry.

“You.”

Her voice became cold.

“You were always the problem.”

I stared at her.

“Because I loved him?”

“No.”

She whispered.

“Because he loved you.”

The call ended.

But before the screen went black…

May you like

Evelyn said:

“Tomorrow, I take back what belongs to me.”
