Chapter 10 - THE HOUSE IN THE RAIN

One year later, I returned to the mansion.
I stood at the same front door.
The same steps.
The same driveway.
I remembered my suitcase hitting the ground.
The rain.
The humiliation.
The moment Daniel had watched me leave.
But everything looked different now.
The house belonged to my son.
I had the deed.
The trust was protected.
Victoria was gone.
Arthur was imprisoned.
And Daniel stood beside me.
He had changed.
Not because he wanted the inheritance.
Because he had finally learned that love wasn't obedience to his mother.
It was responsibility.
He looked at the steps.
“I hate that you had to stand here alone.”
“So do I.”
“I should have come after you.”
“Yes.”
“I can't change that.”
“No.”
“But I can make sure it never happens again.”
I looked at him.
“I believe you.”
It was the first time I had said those words.
He smiled.
Then Robert began crying inside.
Daniel laughed.
“Our son is awake.”
We went inside.
Sophia was holding him.
Lucas was sitting beside her.
My father was preparing coffee.
For the first time, the mansion felt like a home.
That night, we opened another room.
The old family library.
Inside was a portrait of Robert.
Underneath it was an inscription.
THE FAMILY IS WHAT YOU PROTECT WHEN THERE IS NOTHING TO GAIN.
I touched the words.
Daniel stood beside me.
“Your father understood.”
“Yes.”
“I wish I had earlier.”
“So do I.”
He looked at Robert.
“I'll teach him.”
“What?”
“That money doesn't make him important.”
I smiled.
“And?”
“That family isn't about blood.”
I nodded.
“And?”
May you like
He looked at me.
“It's about who stays.”
