Chapter 8 - THE TRUTH ABOUT MY BABY

The genetic investigation lasted weeks.
The results were finally confirmed.
My baby was directly descended from Robert Carter.
The original heir.
But there was another discovery.
The trust didn't belong to the child immediately.
It belonged to the child only if the mother survived and remained the legal guardian.
Victoria had tried to remove me because she needed control.
The entire accusation had been constructed around that clause.
The photograph of Michael was fake.
The image had been digitally altered.
Michael testified.
He explained that he had driven me home because my car broke down.
The investigator found the original photograph.
It showed me standing several feet away from him.
No affair.
No secret.
No betrayal.
Only a lie.
Daniel listened to the testimony.
When it ended, he turned to me.
“I believed a lie because it was easier than believing you.”
I nodded.
“That is what hurt.”
“I know.”
“I don't know if I can forgive you.”
“You don't have to.”
He looked at my stomach.
“I'll spend the rest of my life proving I deserve to be near our child.”
I believed him.
Not completely.
But enough to give him a chance.
The baby was born three months later.
A boy.
Healthy.
Strong.
We named him Robert.
After the grandfather who had tried to protect his children.
Sophia held him first.
Then Lucas.
Then Daniel.
When Daniel held his son, he cried.
“He's beautiful.”
I smiled.
“Yes.”
“He has your eyes.”
I laughed.
“And your stubbornness.”
Daniel smiled.
“Good.”
My father stood beside us.
For the first time, everyone was together.
No secrets.
No lies.
No locked rooms.
No hidden vaults.
Just family.
But the Carter story wasn't finished.

The court still had to decide the fate of the fortune.
And Victoria had one final move.
