Chapter 7 - THE VAULT

The vault was beneath the oldest part of the Carter estate.
We entered through a hidden tunnel.
The walls were covered with old family portraits.
At the end was a steel door.
My father's hands trembled.
“You're sure?”
Lucas nodded.
“Robert designed it.”
I placed my hand against the scanner.
Nothing happened.
Then the baby moved.
The scanner flashed green.
The door opened.
Inside were thousands of documents.
Gold certificates.
Property deeds.
Company records.
Bank accounts.
Photographs.
And one enormous ledger.
I opened it.
Every Carter transaction from the last thirty years was recorded.
Arthur had stolen millions.
Victoria had forged signatures.
Money had been moved through dozens of shell companies.
Daniel's name appeared repeatedly.
But beside it was a note:
DECOY HEIR.
Daniel stared.
“My entire life was fake.”
Sophia touched his shoulder.
“You were still a person.”
He shook his head.
“They used me.”
“Yes.”
He looked at me.
“And I used you.”
I didn't answer.
Then Lucas found a sealed envelope.
Robert's final letter.
He opened it.
The first line read:
To Emily, my daughter.
My hands began shaking.
I read.
If you are reading this, you survived.
Your brother survived.
And the child you carry will become the final Carter heir.
I cried.
The letter continued.
Do not let them make you believe blood is the same as family.
Your mother loved you.
Your father loved you.
Even those who failed you may one day learn to love you.
But never confuse forgiveness with permission to hurt you again.
I folded the letter.
Daniel was crying.
“I am sorry.”
I looked at him.
“I know.”
Then a voice came from behind us.
“You shouldn't have opened that.”
We turned.
Victoria stood in the doorway.
Arthur beside her.
Police weapons were pointed at them.
But Arthur smiled.
“You think the documents will save you?”
My father stepped forward.
“The police have enough evidence.”
Arthur laughed.
“Evidence doesn't matter if the heir doesn't survive.”
Victoria looked directly at my stomach.
“You have until midnight.”
Daniel moved between us.
“No.”
Victoria's eyes narrowed.
“You would choose her?”
Daniel answered:
“Yes.”
Arthur raised his weapon.
Police shouted.
A struggle erupted.
My father tackled Arthur.
Victoria ran toward me.
She grabbed my arm.
Daniel pulled her away.
She stumbled.
Police officers restrained her.
Arthur was arrested.

The vault became a crime scene.
And for the first time, the Carter family secret was no longer a secret.
