Chapter 9 - THE COURTROOM

Victoria appeared in court wearing a dark suit.

She looked calm.

Almost confident.

Her attorney argued that I had manipulated the inheritance.

That Sophia had fabricated the story.

That Lucas had been coached.

That Daniel had been emotionally unstable.

Then they produced a document.

A supposed confession from Robert.

It claimed that I had never been his daughter.

The courtroom became silent.

I looked at the paper.

Something felt wrong.

Lucas leaned toward me.

“That's not his handwriting.”

My father examined it.

“He's right.”

The prosecutor introduced a handwriting expert.

The document was forged.

Then came the bank records.

The digital photographs.

The hospital surveillance.

The phone calls.

Everything pointed toward Victoria.

But the biggest evidence was the old recording.

Robert's voice.

Recorded twenty-nine years earlier.

He explained the entire plan.

He named Arthur.

He named Victoria.

He named the original heir.

And he identified me.

The courtroom listened in silence.

Victoria's face collapsed.

When the recording ended, she whispered:

“I did what I had to do.”

I looked at her.

“You threw a pregnant woman into the rain.”

“I was protecting my family.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“You were protecting money.”

Victoria cried.

“You don't understand.”

“I understand perfectly.”

She was sentenced for fraud, conspiracy, identity theft, and other crimes connected to the scheme.

Arthur received a longer sentence.

Daniel testified against them.

Lucas became a beneficiary.

Sophia received a protected trust.

And my son inherited the Carter estate.

But I made one decision that shocked everyone.

I refused to keep the fortune personally.

Instead, I created the Carter Family Foundation.

Hospitals.

Maternal care.

Children's shelters.

Legal assistance.

Housing.

The fortune would help people who had been treated as disposable.

Exactly the opposite of what Victoria had done to me.
