Chapter 13: The Twin Sister Who Had Been Erased

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

I stood in the middle of Thomas's office, holding the phone against my ear, listening to Vanessa breathe.

“Say that again,” I whispered.

“Your mother had twins.””

“No. That's impossible.””

“I wish it were.””

“Why didn't anyone tell me?””

Vanessa began crying.

“Because Daniel made sure nobody could.””

Thomas moved closer and motioned for me to put the call on speaker.

I did.

“Vanessa,” he said firmly, “we need you to explain exactly what you know. Not what you suspect. What you can prove.””

There was a pause.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“Denise gave birth to two girls. You were born first. Charlotte came forty minutes later.””

I looked at Lily.

She had gone completely still.

“Then who was Charlotte?”” I asked.

“The girl you said was Rachel's daughter?””

“No. That was the lie Daniel and Margaret created to cover what happened.””

My stomach tightened.

Vanessa continued.

“Rachel's baby died shortly after birth. Daniel couldn't accept it because Michael had promised Rachel he would help raise her daughter. Margaret was desperate to preserve the family name and the inheritance arrangement. So when Denise delivered twins, they saw an opportunity.””

Thomas interrupted.

“Are you saying the hospital records were altered to conceal the existence of the second Carter baby?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because Daniel wanted one child to be his publicly recognized heir and the other to disappear. He believed having two daughters would complicate the trust, the inheritance, and his control over Denise.””

I felt sick.

“Where is my sister?””

Vanessa was silent.

“Vanessa!””

“I don't know where she is now.””

“You said her name was Charlotte.””

“Yes.””

“Then where is she?””

Vanessa took a shaky breath.

“Margaret arranged for her to be raised under another identity. Daniel was supposed to receive updates, but eventually Margaret stopped sharing them.””

Thomas leaned forward.

“Did you ever meet the child?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“When she was six.””

I remembered the photograph in the red box.

The little girl standing beside Vanessa.

The girl with the same dark eyes as mine.

“Was that Charlotte?””

“Yes.””

“Then who was Lily?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“Lily is Rachel's niece. Her mother was Rachel's cousin, and Denise took her in after her family situation became complicated. Daniel used Lily's identity to confuse the records and make it appear that Charlotte had been sent away.””

Lily looked down.

I reached for her hand.

“So you knew?”” I asked Vanessa.

“I knew some of it. Not all.””

“You watched me grow up while my sister was somewhere else?””

“I tried to find her.””

“You helped send Lily away!””

“I know.””

“You signed those papers!””

“I was afraid Daniel would destroy the only chance I had of finding Charlotte.””

I felt anger rising in my chest.

“You keep saying you were afraid. What about us? What about the children you all used to protect yourselves?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

Thomas took over.

“Where can we find the original records?””

“Daniel's office. Behind Denise's photograph. There's a small safe. The receipt Maya mentioned is inside, along with a document Margaret forced Daniel to sign.””

“What document?””

“A statement acknowledging that Charlotte was his daughter and that he had concealed her identity.””

Thomas looked at me.

“Can you get us access?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“I can.””

We arrived at the Carter house just before sunset.

Daniel was in his office.

He looked up when we entered.

His eyes immediately went to Vanessa.

“You shouldn't be here.””

“I know,” she said.

Thomas placed a document on his desk.

“We need access to the safe behind Denise's photograph.””

Daniel stood.

“Get out.””

I stepped forward.

“Where is my sister?””

His face changed.

For the first time, I saw something resembling fear.

“What sister?””

“Charlotte.””

He looked at Vanessa.

She didn't move.

I placed the hospital bracelet on his desk.

“Stop pretending.””

Daniel stared at the bracelet.

Then he sat down.

“You don't understand what happened.””

“Then explain it.””

He rubbed his forehead.

“Your mother gave birth to twins. I was told one of the babies would complicate the family arrangements.””

“Who told you that?””

“Margaret.””

“And you agreed to hide my sister?””

“I thought it was temporary.””

“Where did she go?””

Daniel stared at the photograph of Denise.

“Margaret arranged for her to live with a family in another state. She said it would protect the child.””

“Did you ever visit her?””

He didn't answer.

“Did you ever look for her?””

His silence was enough.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“You promised me you would bring her back.””

Daniel's voice hardened.

“You had no right to interfere.””

“She was my niece.””

“She was a problem.””

The words hung in the room.

I felt something inside me break.

“She was a baby.””

Daniel looked away.

Thomas moved toward the framed photograph.

“I'm opening the safe.””

Daniel didn't stop him.

Behind the photograph was a small keypad.

Vanessa entered a code.

The safe clicked open.

Inside were several envelopes, a folded bank receipt, and a document bearing Daniel's signature.

Thomas read it.

His expression darkened.

“This is an acknowledgment of concealed parentage.””

He turned the paper toward me.

The document stated that Daniel Carter had knowingly concealed the birth of his second daughter, Charlotte Carter, and had authorized Margaret Reed to arrange her upbringing under a different identity.

There was another signature beneath his.

Margaret's.

And a third.

Denise's.

I stared at my mother's signature.

“Why did Mom sign this?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“She was trying to protect Charlotte.””

“By letting her disappear?””

“She was told the family would keep her safe.””

“Then why didn't she tell me?””

“Because she didn't want you growing up knowing your sister had been taken from you.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Do you know where she is?””

Vanessa nodded.

“I found an address in Margaret's private papers. I was going to tell Denise, but Daniel threatened to have me arrested for fraud.””

“Where?””

Vanessa reached into her handbag and handed Thomas a folded page.

The address was in a small town three hours away.

Beside it was a name.

*Charlotte Hayes.*

I looked at the photograph in the red box again.

The little girl had grown up under another name.

My twin sister was somewhere in the world, unaware that I existed.

I turned toward my father.

“You knew where she was all this time.””

Daniel's eyes filled.

“I knew where she had been.””

“And you never told me.””

“No.””

I picked up the document.

“You don't get to decide what happens to us anymore.””

Then I walked out.

On the drive home, Thomas received a message.

It was from the family listed at the address.

The woman who had raised Charlotte had died two years earlier.

But the daughter was still alive.

And she had recently changed her surname.

Thomas read the new name aloud.

“Charlotte Reed.””

Vanessa gasped.

“Why would she use Reed?””

Thomas checked the attached photograph.

A young woman stood outside a university building.

She had my face.

My eyes.

My mother's smile.

And beneath the photograph was a message.

I know someone has been looking for me.

I stared at the screen.

May you like

Then another message arrived.

If you're Maya Carter, don't come alone. Your father knows where I live.
