Chapter 14: The Night My Father Lost Everything
Charlotte agreed to meet us at a small café near the university.
We arrived early.
Thomas insisted on bringing a second attorney and keeping the meeting in a public place. Evelyn sat beside me, while Lily waited near the window.
Vanessa stayed in the car.
She had asked to come inside, but Charlotte had specifically requested that she not be present.
I understood.
Charlotte had been hidden from the world by people who claimed they were protecting her.
She had every right to decide who she wanted to see.
At exactly three o'clock, the café door opened.
A young woman walked inside.
She was about my height.
Her dark hair fell just below her shoulders, and she wore a black jacket over a white shirt.
When she looked up, I forgot how to breathe.
It was like looking into a mirror that had grown older.
She saw me.
Her eyes widened.
Then she approached slowly.
“Maya?””
I nodded.
“Charlotte?””
She swallowed.
“I guess that's what they called me.””
We stood there awkwardly.
Then she looked at my face.
“You have Mom's eyes.””
I started crying.
“So do you.””
She sat down.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then Charlotte looked at Lily.
“Who are you?””
Lily introduced herself.
Charlotte listened carefully.
When Lily finished explaining how she had been raised in our home and sent away, Charlotte reached across the table.
“You didn't deserve that.””
Lily smiled sadly.
“Neither did you.””
The two of them looked at each other.
Different lives.
Different names.
The same family secrets.
Charlotte told us she had grown up with a woman named Margaret Hayes.
Margaret had adopted her when she was six.
She had been told her biological parents were dead.
The only thing she had been given from her childhood was a photograph of a woman she recognized as Denise.
“She used to tell me that Denise was someone who loved me very much,” Charlotte said.
“But whenever I asked why I couldn't see her, she said it was too dangerous.””
“Did you know you had a twin?”” I asked.
Charlotte shook her head.
“No. I found out six months ago.””
“How?””
“Margaret died. I was going through her things and found a letter from Denise.””
Charlotte removed a folded paper from her bag.
It was written in my mother's handwriting.
My precious Charlotte,
I hope one day you understand that I never stopped loving you.
You were taken from my arms before I could learn the sound of your first cry.
Your sister Maya is growing up in the home I prepared for both of you.
I pray you find each other before the truth becomes another weapon in your father's hands.
I pressed the letter against my chest.
My mother had known where Charlotte was.
She had been writing to her.
But she had never been able to bring her home.
“Why didn't you contact me?”” I asked.
Charlotte looked down.
“I was afraid Daniel would find me. Margaret told me he had powerful friends and that he would do anything to protect his reputation.””
“Did you know he was your father?””
“Yes.””
“Did you know about Michael Reed?””
She nodded.
“Margaret told me Michael was your biological father. She said he had been involved with Denise before the accident.””
I stared at her.
“So we're both Michael's daughters.””
“Yes.””
Thomas placed the laboratory reports on the table.
“We need to verify everything independently. But the available documents strongly support that conclusion.””
Charlotte looked at me.
“Does that mean we really are twins?””
I held out my hand.
She took it.
“I think so.””
For the first time since Denise died, I felt something other than grief.
I felt that a missing piece of my life had finally come home.
Then Charlotte's expression changed.
“There is something else.””
She opened her bag and removed a small envelope.
“Margaret left this for me. She told me to give it to the first attorney who came looking for Daniel's records.””
Thomas opened it.
Inside was a printed bank transfer and a handwritten note.
The transfer was dated the day before Michael's accident.
The amount was $75,000.
The recipient was Robert Hayes.
Thomas read the note.
Payment for the problem to be permanently resolved.
My hands went cold.
“That's the payment for Michael's death?””
Thomas examined the bank details.
“It appears to be.””
Charlotte pointed to the bottom.
“There's another account number.””
Thomas checked it.
His expression changed.
“This account belongs to Daniel.””
I looked up.
“So he paid Robert?””
Thomas nodded.
“And the transfer was routed through Reed Consulting Group.””
Vanessa's company.
The entire arrangement was becoming clear.
Daniel had used Vanessa's company to move money, conceal his daughter's identity, and pay the man who had sabotaged Michael's car.
But one question remained.
Why had Vanessa kept helping him?
We returned to the Carter house that evening.
Daniel was waiting in the living room.
He looked at Charlotte and immediately stood.
For a moment, his face showed something almost human.
“Charlotte.””
She didn't answer.
“I've been looking for you.””
“No, you haven't.””
“I thought Margaret had taken you somewhere safe.””
“You knew where I was.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Who told you?””
Charlotte stepped forward.
“I found the letters. I found the records. I know what happened to Michael.””
Daniel's expression hardened.
“You don't know anything.””
Thomas placed the bank transfer on the table.
“Then explain this.””
Daniel stared at it.
His mouth opened.
No words came out.
Evelyn stood near the doorway.
“Daniel, tell them the truth.””
He turned toward her.
“You have no idea what I sacrificed for this family.””
I stepped forward.
“You sacrificed everyone.””
He shook his head.
“I was trying to keep the business alive.””
“By stealing Michael's money?””
“Michael was going to destroy everything.””
“He was going to expose you.””
“He was going to take my family apart!””
Charlotte looked at him.
“You mean he was going to tell me who I was.””
Daniel's eyes filled.
“You were a child.””
“So was Maya.””
He looked at me.
“I raised you.””
I swallowed.
“You raised me while hiding my sister, stealing my inheritance, and helping cover up the death of the man who was supposed to be my father.””
Daniel slammed his hand against the table.
“I did what I had to do!””
The room fell silent.
Thomas slowly placed another document beside the transfer.
“This is the original statement you signed acknowledging Charlotte's birth. We also have the hospital records, the trust documents, and the correspondence with Westbridge.””
Daniel looked at the papers.
“You can't prove any of that.””
Thomas remained calm.
“We already have copies with the district attorney.””
Daniel's face went pale.
Vanessa entered from the hallway.
She had been listening.
“I gave them the payment receipt,” she said.
Daniel turned toward her.
“You betrayed me.””
Vanessa's eyes filled.
“No, Daniel. I stopped helping you.””
“You owe me everything.””
“I owe you nothing.””
“You think they'll believe you?””
Vanessa took a breath.
“I have the original emails. I have the account records. I have the guardianship agreement. And I have a recording of you telling Margaret that Michael would never get to meet his daughter.””
Daniel stared at her.
For the first time, he looked completely defeated.
Then he did something none of us expected.
He began to laugh.
“You think this is over?””
Thomas stepped closer.
“Daniel, don't make this worse.””
My father looked directly at me.
“Ask Vanessa what happened to your mother.””
I froze.
Vanessa's face went white.
“What does he mean?”” I asked.
Daniel smiled bitterly.
“Your mother didn't die because of her illness alone.””
Thomas immediately moved between us.
“Daniel, stop talking.””
But I couldn't.
“What happened to Mom?””
Vanessa backed away.
“Daniel, don't.””
May you like
He leaned toward me.
“Ask her what she put in Denise's medicine.””
