Chapter 7: The Woman Who Inherited a House She Had Never Seen

“Charlotte is alive?””

Vanessa's whisper seemed to hang in the driveway long after she stopped speaking.

My father didn't move.

He stood beside the broken jewelry box, staring at the ground as though the concrete might open and swallow him.

I held my phone against my ear.

“Thomas, explain what you just said.””

His voice was urgent.

“Margaret Reed transferred ownership of a property into the name Charlotte Carter approximately three weeks ago. The transfer was recorded yesterday, shortly before her death.””

“Who is Charlotte Carter?””

“I don't know yet. But the document includes a date of birth that matches the second child born at St. Mary's on the night you were delivered.””

Vanessa grabbed my arm.

“Let me speak to him.””

I handed her the phone.

“Thomas, this is Vanessa Reed. Where is she?””

There was a pause.

“Mrs. Reed, I need to ask you something. Did you ever legally change your daughter's name?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No. Margaret handled everything. She told me Charlotte was being cared for by a family who couldn't have children.””

“And did you ever meet that family?””

“No.””

“Did you receive photographs?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Only one. When Charlotte was six.””

Thomas continued.

“Then we may have located her.””

Vanessa began crying.

Daniel suddenly reached for the phone.

“Give me that.””

I stepped back.

“No.””

“That's not a request, Maya.””

Evelyn moved between us.

“Touch her again, Daniel, and I'll call the police myself.””

My father stopped.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa turned toward him.

“You knew.””

Daniel looked away.

“You knew Charlotte was alive.””

He rubbed his forehead.

“I was told she had been placed somewhere safe.””

“By your mother-in-law?””

“Margaret arranged it.””

Vanessa slapped him.

The sound echoed across the driveway.

“You let me believe my daughter was dead!””

Daniel caught her wrist.

“Don't make a scene.””

She pulled away.

“You stole seventeen years from me!””

He looked toward the house.

“Everyone needs to calm down.””

I stared at him.

“You keep saying that. You keep telling everyone to calm down whenever they discover something terrible you've done.””

He pointed at me.

“You have no idea what happened.””

“Then tell me.””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Thomas's voice came through the phone.

“Maya, listen carefully. I'm sending someone to your location. Nobody should leave until we establish the facts.””

I looked at my father.

“Good.””

For the first time, he looked genuinely trapped.

An hour later, we were sitting in Thomas's office.

A local attorney had joined us, along with a police investigator who had agreed to review the suspected document alterations.

Daniel had arrived separately.

He refused to sit beside Vanessa.

Instead, he chose the chair nearest the door.

Thomas placed a property record on the conference table.

“This is the document Margaret Reed filed three weeks ago.””

I leaned forward.

The property was a large Victorian house outside the city.

Its owner was listed as Charlotte Carter.

“Why would Margaret leave a house to a woman she supposedly gave away?”” I asked.

Thomas adjusted his glasses.

“Because she may have been trying to reconnect with her granddaughter.””

Vanessa wiped her face.

“She never told me.””

Thomas turned to her.

“Mrs. Reed, did your mother ever mention a private adoption?””

“No.””

“Did she ever tell you Charlotte was being raised by another family?””

“Yes. She said the family lived outside the state. She said they were financially secure and that Charlotte would have a better life.””

I looked at her.

“Did you believe her?””

Vanessa nodded.

“I was young. My mother told me the arrangement was temporary. Then Daniel started giving me money.””

Daniel slammed his hand on the table.

“Stop talking.””

Thomas didn't look at him.

“Mr. Carter, we need to understand the financial connection.””

Daniel leaned back.

“There was no connection.””

Thomas slid a bank statement toward him.

“Then perhaps you can explain these transfers.””

The statement showed several payments from a Carter family business account to Reed Consulting Group.

The total exceeded $400,000.

Daniel looked at the paper.

“Those were legitimate business expenses.””

“According to your company's accounting records, they were not.””

“That's a bookkeeping issue.””

“Then why were the transfers made shortly before the hospital records were amended?””

Daniel said nothing.

Vanessa stared at him.

“You told me the money came from your investments.””

“It did.””

“You told me my mother had approved it.””

“She had.””

“Then why did she leave everything to Charlotte?””

Daniel's expression changed.

Thomas noticed.

“What do you know about the inheritance, Mr. Carter?””

“Nothing.””

“You're familiar with the property?””

“No.””

Vanessa suddenly stood.

“Liar!””

She reached into her handbag and removed another document.

“My mother sent me this six months ago.””

She pushed it across the table.

It was a handwritten letter.

Vanessa,

I have made arrangements for Charlotte. She deserves to know where she came from. I cannot undo what happened, but I can make sure she has a future.

Daniel knows more than he admits.

If he ever contacts you about the house, do not sign anything.

I looked at my father.

He was staring at the letter.

Thomas slowly removed his glasses.

“Mr. Carter, why would Margaret warn her daughter not to sign documents involving you?””

Daniel stood.

“I've had enough.””

The investigator rose too.

“Mr. Carter, I'd advise you to remain here until we've finished.””

My father looked around the room.

Then his eyes settled on me.

“You think you've won something?””

I didn't answer.

He leaned closer.

“Your mother spent years trying to destroy me. Now you're doing the same thing.””

I felt my hands tighten.

“No. I'm trying to find the truth.””

He gave a bitter laugh.

“Truth? You want the truth? Ask your mother why she kept you instead of sending you back.””

The words hit me like a slap.

Vanessa began crying again.

Daniel walked out.

The investigator followed him.

And I sat there, wondering whether the woman who had loved me my entire life had been forced to make a choice that had hurt someone else.

That night, Thomas called.

He had located the woman listed on the property transfer.

Her current address was in a neighboring town.

She had been living under the name Charlotte Bennett.

A twenty-three-year-old woman.

I frowned.

“Twenty-three?””

Thomas paused.

“Yes.””

“But the hospital records say Charlotte was born the same night I was.””

“That's what the documents indicate.””

“Then how can she be twenty-three?””

He was silent.

Then he said something that made my heart stop.

“Because the woman listed as Charlotte Carter was not the baby born seventeen years ago.””

“Then who is she?””

Thomas took a breath.

“I believe she is the daughter of someone who has been hiding the original records.””

I sat up.

“Who?””

May you like

He answered quietly.

“Your father.””
