Chapter 6: The Daughter My Father Tried to Erase

I couldn't stop looking at the photograph.

The little girl in Vanessa's arms had the same birthmark I had.

The same one my mother used to kiss when I was little.

I touched the skin beneath my left ear.

“That's me.””

Evelyn began crying.

Thomas took the photograph and examined it carefully.

“Patricia, are you certain this is Charlotte?””

Patricia nodded.

“Vanessa brought her to the hospital regularly. I remember the child.””

“Then why does the document say Daniel promised to bring her home?””

Patricia looked at the floor.

“Because Charlotte disappeared from the family's records when she was six.””

My throat tightened.

“Disappeared?””

“She was no longer listed in the hospital's private patient records. Vanessa stopped visiting. Margaret retired shortly afterward.””

“Where did the girl go?””

“I don't know.””

Thomas placed the photograph inside a protective folder.

“Do you have any other records?””

Patricia hesitated.

Then she stood and walked toward a locked cabinet.

She returned with a small envelope.

“I kept this because I didn't trust the way everything was handled.””

Inside was a photocopy of a medical report.

The heading read:

Pediatric Admission — Female Child, Age Six.

The patient name was Charlotte Reed.

The date was seventeen years ago minus six.

I read the details.

The child had been admitted after an accident at home.

There was a description of a small scar beneath her left ear.

The same birthmark.

But the final page contained something even more disturbing.

A discharge authorization signed by Daniel Carter.

The destination listed was our home.

I looked at Thomas.

“Why would my father bring Charlotte home?””

Thomas examined the document.

“Perhaps because he believed the child was legally his responsibility.””

“But why would Vanessa let him?””

Nobody answered.

I stared at the photograph again.

There was something familiar about the little girl.

Not just her face.

The way she held her mother's fingers.

I had seen that expression before.

In my own childhood photographs.

“Can I take this?”” I asked.

Patricia nodded.

“Of course.””

Thomas put the documents away.

“We need to verify the original records before making any claims.””

I looked at him.

“What if my father has the originals?””

“Then we need to find them before he destroys them.””

On the drive home, Evelyn finally told me something she had kept from me for years.

“When you were six, Denise received a phone call in the middle of the night.””

I turned toward her.

“What kind of phone call?””

“Your mother came downstairs crying. She told me Daniel had said something about a little girl named Charlotte.””

My stomach tightened.

“What did she do?””

“She packed a bag for you. She wanted to leave.””

“Why didn't she?””

“Daniel came home before we could go.””

Evelyn stared through the windshield.

“He told Denise that if she ever took you away, he would make sure she never saw you again.””

I felt cold.

“Was that why Mom stayed?””

“She was frightened. But she also believed leaving without understanding the legal situation could put you at risk.””

I looked out the window.

My mother had been protecting me for years.

Perhaps even before I understood what danger looked like.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because Denise asked me not to. She believed she could solve it.””

I swallowed.

“She couldn't.””

Evelyn's voice broke.

“No, sweetheart. She couldn't.””

When we reached home, my father was standing in the driveway.

He was holding my mother's old jewelry box.

Vanessa stood beside him.

“Where have you been?”” he demanded.

I stepped out of the car.

“Why?””

“Because I asked you a question.””

“I'm allowed to leave the house.””

“Not when you're spreading lies about this family.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Do you know a girl named Charlotte?””

Her face went completely still.

My father dropped the jewelry box.

It hit the driveway with a loud crack.

“Get inside,” he said.

I didn't move.

“Who is Charlotte?””

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

Daniel stepped toward me.

“Stop asking questions about things you don't understand.””

“I understand that you signed documents about a baby. I understand that you and Vanessa were involved in changing hospital records. And I understand that Mom knew.””

His face darkened.

“Your mother was sick.””

“Don't you dare use her illness to excuse what you did.””

Vanessa began crying.

“Daniel, tell her.””

He turned sharply.

“Be quiet.””

“Tell her what happened!””

He grabbed her arm.

She pulled away.

For the first time, I saw something other than fear in her expression.

I saw anger.

“You promised me,” she said.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Not here.””

But Vanessa had already made up her mind.

She looked at me.

“Charlotte was my daughter.””

My heart stopped.

“Then who am I?””

She covered her mouth.

Daniel stepped between us.

“That's enough. Both of you.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No. I've spent seventeen years watching you pretend this never happened.””

She looked at me again.

“Your father took my baby.””

I felt my knees weaken.

“What?””

“He told me Denise couldn't have children. He said your mother was desperate for a baby, and that if I allowed her to raise you, he'd make sure I could still see you.””

I shook my head.

“That's not possible.””

“He promised me everything would be temporary.””

My father laughed bitterly.

“You're leaving out the important part.””

Vanessa turned on him.

“What important part?””

“You signed the agreement!””

“I was nineteen!””

“You knew what you were doing.””

“I trusted you!””

Their voices rose.

I stood between them, unable to process what I was hearing.

Then Daniel said something that changed everything.

“You weren't supposed to get attached to her.””

Vanessa went silent.

I looked at her.

“Attached to whom?””

She began crying harder.

“To you.””

My father rubbed his face.

“Vanessa, stop.””

But she kept talking.

“I used to come to the house when you were little. I watched you sleep. I brought you birthday presents. Your mother knew who I was.””

I felt my throat close.

“Mom knew you were my biological mother?””

Vanessa nodded.

“She found out when you were six.””

“And she let you visit?””

“Not after the night she discovered the money arrangement.””

I looked at my father.

“What money arrangement?””

He said nothing.

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

“Margaret had set aside money for me. Daniel was supposed to protect it until I was old enough to take control. But he took it.””

Daniel's face went red.

“You have no idea what you're talking about.””

“I have the bank statements!””

She reached into her handbag and pulled out a folded document.

“You stole the money meant for Charlotte!””

I stared at her.

“Charlotte?””

Vanessa looked at me.

Then she shook her head.

“No. You're Maya. You're the girl Denise raised. Charlotte was the other baby.””

I frowned.

“What happened to her?””

Vanessa's expression crumpled.

“I don't know.””

The front door opened.

Aunt Evelyn stepped outside.

She had heard everything.

“Daniel,” she said quietly, “what did you do to that child?””

My father looked at her.

Then he looked at me.

For the first time, I saw genuine fear in his eyes.

He took a step backward.

“You should all leave this alone.””

I moved closer.

“Where is Charlotte?””

He stared at me.

Then he whispered:

“She died.””

Vanessa screamed.

“YOU LIAR!””

My father turned toward her.

“You know what happened!””

Vanessa stumbled backward, clutching the document.

I looked from one to the other.

“Tell me the truth!””

Daniel's voice cracked.

“Charlotte didn't die. She was taken away after the accident. I was told she had been placed in foster care.””

“By whom?””

He looked at Vanessa.

She shook her head.

“No. Don't you dare.””

Daniel swallowed.

Then he spoke the name that made Vanessa collapse against the car.

“Margaret.””

Thomas's warning suddenly returned to my mind.

The hospital administrator.

The woman who had helped change the birth records.

The woman who had disappeared from our lives.

I pulled out my phone and called Thomas.

He answered immediately.

“Have you found anything?””

I looked at my father.

“Yes. And I think you need to contact the police.””

“Why?””

I stared at the photograph in my hand.

“Because my father says the other baby disappeared seventeen years ago.””

Thomas went silent.

Then he said:

“Maya, don't let Daniel leave that house.””

“Why?””

His next words made my blood run cold.

“Because Margaret Reed died yesterday, and before she died, she transferred a property into the name of a woman called Charlotte Carter.””

I looked at my father.

His face had turned white.

May you like

And then Vanessa whispered:

“That's impossible. Charlotte is alive?””
