Chapter 9: The Truth Behind the Two Birth Certificates
For a moment, I couldn't move.
The hospital bracelet lay in my palm.
MAYA CARTER.
My name.
My birthday.
My identity.
But Emily had just told me that her grandmother believed I was the baby who should have been hers.
I looked at Thomas.
“Can someone please explain what is happening?””
He took the bracelet carefully.
“Emily, when you say your grandmother believed Maya was supposed to be yours, what exactly did she mean?””
Emily sat on the edge of the sofa.
“Margaret told me that Rachel had given birth to a daughter on the same night Denise Carter delivered her baby. Daniel was supposed to take Rachel's daughter home temporarily while arrangements were made.””
“Why?””
Emily looked at me.
“Because Rachel was dying.””
My chest tightened.
“Vanessa's sister?””
She nodded.
“Rachel had a serious medical condition. She didn't have a husband, and she was afraid her daughter would grow up without a stable family. Daniel promised to help.””
Thomas leaned forward.
“Was Denise aware of this?””
“Margaret said Denise agreed to care for the baby.””
I shook my head.
“No. My mother would never have agreed to something like that without knowing the truth.””
Emily nodded.
“That's what I thought too. But Margaret insisted Denise knew.””
I looked at the bracelet.
“Then what happened to the other baby?””
Emily's face crumpled.
“Margaret said Daniel took the wrong child home.””
Thomas closed his eyes.
The room went silent.
I looked at him.
“Which one am I?””
He didn't answer.
Emily continued.
“According to Margaret, the baby Daniel brought home was Denise's biological daughter. The baby he left with Rachel's family was Vanessa's niece.””
I frowned.
“Vanessa's niece?””
“Rachel's daughter.””
I slowly understood.
If the babies had been switched, then the child raised by Denise might not have been the child Vanessa's family expected.
But the documents were still contradictory.
Thomas took out his phone.
“I need to verify the original birth records with the hospital.””
Emily stood.
“There is one more thing Margaret left behind.””
She walked upstairs.
A minute later, she returned holding a thick envelope.
“This was supposed to be delivered to Daniel after my twenty-first birthday. But I never gave it to him.””
Thomas examined the seal.
It was already broken.
“Why not?””
“Because I found out he had been taking money from my grandmother's estate.””
She handed it to me.
Inside was a letter from Margaret.
Daniel,
You have spent seventeen years pretending that the arrangement we made was for the children's benefit.
It was not.
You wanted to protect your business. I wanted to protect Rachel's child. We both made decisions that destroyed Denise's family.
I know you changed the hospital documents. I know you used the money to silence Vanessa. And I know you promised Rachel that her daughter would eventually be returned.
But you never intended to keep that promise.
I looked up.
“Why would my father do that?””
Emily's expression hardened.
“Because Rachel's daughter was entitled to a substantial inheritance from her father's family. Daniel knew about it.””
Thomas turned another page.
There was a financial statement.
An account had been established in the child's name.
Its value had grown significantly over the years.
“Who controlled it?”” Thomas asked.
Emily pointed to a name.
“Daniel Carter.””
My stomach turned.
“He stole the inheritance?””
Emily nodded.
“That's what my grandmother believed.””
Thomas studied the document.
“If this is authentic, it could establish a serious financial claim.””
I looked at Emily.
“Why did Margaret leave you the house?””
“Because she felt guilty. She wanted me to have something that belonged to my family.””
“Did she know where Rachel's daughter was?””
Emily looked away.
“She said Daniel knew.””
I stood.
“Then we need to find him.””
We returned to my father's house that afternoon.
Daniel was in the living room, packing documents into a briefcase.
When he saw us, he stopped.
“What is she doing here?””
Emily stood beside me.
“Hello, Dad.””
He stared at her.
For several seconds, his expression was unreadable.
Then he closed the briefcase.
“Emily.””
“It's been a long time.””
“What do you want?””
“The truth.””
He laughed bitterly.
“That's all anyone wants these days.””
Emily placed Margaret's letter on the coffee table.
“Did you take Rachel's daughter's inheritance?””
Daniel didn't touch it.
“I don't know what you're talking about.””
“You controlled the account.””
“Your grandmother handled the money.””
“She named you as trustee.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Did you bring her here to accuse me?””
I stepped forward.
“No. She came because she wants to know why you lied to her.””
He turned toward Emily.
“You have no idea what happened.””
“Then explain it.””
He rubbed his forehead.
“Your mother was dying. She asked me to help her sister's child.””
Emily shook her head.
“Rachel was my mother. Vanessa was her sister. You were supposed to protect her daughter.””
Daniel stared at her.
“Exactly.””
“Then where is she?””
He looked toward the staircase.
I followed his eyes.
“What?””
Daniel sighed.
“Your mother made everything more complicated than it needed to be.””
I stepped closer.
“Stop talking about Mom. Tell us where Rachel's daughter is.””
He finally opened his briefcase.
Inside were several folders.
He removed a faded photograph and placed it on the table.
It showed a young woman standing outside a school.
She had dark hair and green eyes.
She looked about twenty.
On the back was a name.
Charlotte Reed.
Emily stared at the photograph.
“That's her.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Where is she?””
He hesitated.
Then he said:
“She was living with Denise.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Daniel nodded.
“Denise knew where she was. She had been protecting her.””
I shook my head.
“That doesn't make sense. Mom never told me.””
“Because she didn't want you to know.””
“Where was Charlotte?””
Daniel looked directly at me.
“Under this roof.””
The room went silent.
I remembered every birthday party.
Every Christmas.
Every family photograph.
Every time my mother had tucked me into bed and kissed my forehead.
“Are you saying Charlotte lived with us?””
Daniel nodded.
“She was there until she was sixteen.””
I felt dizzy.
“Who was she?””
My father looked at Emily.
Then at me.
And finally he said the words I would never forget.
“Your mother introduced her to you as your cousin, Lily.””
I stared at him.
Lily.
My cousin.
The girl who had lived with us for years.
The girl who had disappeared without explanation when I was sixteen.
The girl my mother said had moved overseas to live with relatives.
I grabbed the back of a chair.
“Where is Lily now?””
Daniel looked down.
“I don't know.””
Emily stepped forward.
“You're lying.””
He shook his head.
“I haven't seen her in over a year.””
I felt tears burning my eyes.
“Why didn't Mom tell me who she was?””
Daniel's voice dropped.
“Because Lily wasn't the only person your mother was protecting.””
He looked toward me.
“She was protecting you from the truth about your birth.””
Then he opened a final folder.
Inside was a photograph of two teenage girls standing together in front of our house.
One was me.
The other was Lily.
On the back, in my mother's handwriting, were the words:
My two daughters. The truth may separate them, but I pray it never makes them strangers.
I reached for the photograph.
And beneath it was a handwritten note.
If Daniel ever reveals Lily's identity, find the red box beneath the floorboards in the old nursery.
I looked at my father.
“What's in the red box?””
His face changed.
For the first time, he looked completely terrified.
May you like
Then he whispered:
“Your mother should never have left you that key.””
