Chapter 13: The File That Could Destroy Us All

Vanessa stood in the doorway as if she owned the building.

Dr. Martin was beside her, holding the original medical file against his chest. Neither looked surprised to find us there.

Robert stepped between them and the desk.

“Put the file down, Doctor.””

Vanessa smiled.

“Always the lawyer. Always arriving just in time to make everything complicated.””

I held up my father's photograph.

“Why did he write that you weren't Rachel's daughter?””

Her smile disappeared.

“Because your father was a sick old man who didn't understand his own family.””

“Then explain the DNA report.””

“Which one?””

“The one you used to convince everyone you were entitled to our family trust.””

She glanced at Dr. Martin.

He shifted the file in his hands.

Robert noticed.

“Doctor, if those are original medical records, you need to preserve them. Removing them from this archive could compromise evidence.””

Vanessa laughed.

“You still think this is about paperwork?””

“No,” Robert replied.

“I think it's about evidence.””

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Vanessa walked into the room.

“Michael, you have spent weeks listening to people who have spent their entire lives lying to you. Your brother. Your mother.

Margaret. Even Rachel.””

“You're the only person who keeps appearing in every lie.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“You have no idea what your father did.””

“Then tell me.””

She looked at the photograph in my hand.

“Your father promised my mother he would protect her. He promised she would never have to beg for what belonged to her.””

“Was Rachel really his daughter?””

Vanessa's expression changed.

“Yes.””

“Then why did he write that you weren't her daughter?””

She took a breath.

“Because he discovered the truth too late.””

“What truth?””

Vanessa looked directly at me.

“My mother wasn't Rachel Collins.””

I felt the room tilt.

“What?””

“My mother was a woman named Julia. She worked for your grandfather. Rachel raised me for a while, but she wasn't my biological mother.””

I stared at her.

“Then who was Rachel?””

“She was my mother's closest friend. She helped raise me after Julia disappeared.””

Robert looked at the photograph again.

“Are you saying the DNA report was deliberately falsified?””

Vanessa gave a bitter smile.

“Your father believed he had found his secret daughter. He wanted to repair a mistake he'd made years earlier. Rachel knew the truth, but she let him believe what he wanted.””

“Why?””

“Because she needed money.””

I shook my head.

“And you used that lie to get access to the trust.””

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

“I used what your family owed me.””

“You weren't entitled to my children's inheritance.””

“They were never supposed to inherit everything.””

Robert stepped forward.

“That's enough. We need to know why you have that medical file.””

Vanessa turned toward him.

“Because it contains the truth about Sarah.””

My chest tightened.

“What did you do to my wife?””

She looked at me.

“I didn't kill Sarah.””

“Then why did she beg you to leave her alone?””

“Because she discovered the account.””

“What account?””

“The one your father used to hide money from the company.””

I remembered the strange transactions in the ledger.

“Where did the money go?””

Vanessa smiled.

“Ask Margaret.””

Robert shook his head.

“We've heard enough. The file needs to be handed over to the authorities.””

Dr. Martin finally spoke.

“You don't understand. If that file is released, several people will be implicated.””

I turned toward him.

“Were you paid to alter Sarah's medical records?””

He looked down.

Vanessa snapped, “Don't answer him.””

That was enough.

Robert took out his phone.

“I am contacting the authorities now.””

Vanessa stepped backward.

“You shouldn't.””

“Why?””

“Because the people you think will help you are already involved.””

Before Robert could respond, the lights went out.

I heard a crash.

Then a door slammed.

When the emergency lights flickered on, Vanessa and Dr. Martin were gone.

The original medical file was gone too.

But my father's envelope remained on the desk.

Robert grabbed it.

“Michael, we need to leave.””

I looked toward the corridor.

“She's getting away.””

“And chasing her without protection is exactly what she wants.””

We exited through the side entrance and called for assistance.

As we waited, I examined the photograph again.

On the back, beneath the date, my father had written another sentence.

Julia's real identity is recorded in the archive ledger.

Robert looked over my shoulder.

“Did you see that before?””

“No.””

We returned to the archive with an officer after the initial report was made. The metal box had been disturbed, but the ledger was still there.

Its final pages contained payments, names, and dates.

One entry stopped me.

*Julia Mercer — identity verification.*

Beside it was a bank account number and a reference to an adoption record.

Robert photographed the page.

“This could establish who Vanessa's biological mother was.””

I turned another page.

There was a letter addressed to my father.

You promised you would never expose me. If you tell Michael what happened, I will make sure he loses everything.

It was signed:

*Evelyn Bennett.*

I stared at the signature.

My mother had not simply been protecting Daniel.

She had been hiding something about Vanessa's identity.

Robert read the letter twice.

“We need to find out whether this is genuine.””

I nodded.

Then my phone rang.

Rachel.

I answered immediately.

“Rachel, where are you?””

“Michael, listen carefully. Vanessa has just called me.””

“What did she say?””

“She said you found the photograph.””

I looked at Robert.

“She knows.””

Rachel's breathing became unsteady.

“She also said she's coming to see me.””

“Where are you?””

“I can't tell you over the phone.””

“Rachel, you need to get somewhere safe.””

“I have something you need.””

“What?””

“The truth about Julia.””

I closed my eyes.

“Tell me.””

Rachel whispered, “Julia wasn't Vanessa's mother.””

I stared at the phone.

“Then who was?””

There was a long silence.

Then Rachel said:

“Your mother.””

The call ended.

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

Robert lowered the phone from his ear.

“What happened?””

I looked at him.

“Vanessa may be my mother's daughter.””

Robert's expression hardened.

“That would make her your sister.””

I looked again at the photograph.

My father had written that Vanessa wasn't Rachel's daughter.

May you like

He hadn't written that she wasn't his.

And suddenly, I understood why my mother had been willing to destroy everything to protect her.
