Chapter 8: The Woman My Father Chose

Robert didn't waste time.

He stepped outside the bank's private room and made two calls.

When he returned, his expression was serious.

“Margaret Collins is alive,” he said.

I looked at him.

“Where?””

“She's retired. She lives about forty minutes outside the city.””

“Can we contact her?””

“I've already requested a meeting through her attorney.””

Daniel was still sitting beside the open safety deposit box.

He looked exhausted.

I turned toward him.

“Did you know Margaret?””

He nodded.

“She worked with Dad for nearly twenty years.””

“Why would Sarah name her as guardian?””

“Because she trusted her.””

I stared at him.

“Did you?””

Daniel looked away.

“I thought she was just another business associate.””

Robert closed the box.

“We need to leave. The documents will be handled properly, and I want a forensic copy of everything before anyone accesses that flash drive.””

As we walked toward the bank exit, my phone vibrated.

A message from Vanessa.

Your mother is trying to destroy you. Ask her what she did before Sarah died.

I stopped.

Robert noticed.

“What is it?””

I showed him the message.

He read it carefully.

“Don't respond.””

Another message arrived.

She wasn't protecting Daniel. She was protecting herself.

Then a third.

Ask why she visited the hospital before Sarah was admitted.

I stared at the screen.

My mother had said she signed an authorization two days after Sarah died.

Vanessa was now claiming she had visited the hospital before Sarah was admitted.

There was something we were missing.

I called my mother again.

No answer.

I tried twice more.

Still nothing.

Then I called Daniel's wife, Rebecca.

“Has Mom contacted you?””

“No. Why?””

“Can you check whether she's at home?””

Rebecca hesitated.

“Michael, I think you should know something.””

“What?””

“Your mother called me this morning. She asked whether the children could stay with me for a few days.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why?””

“She said she needed to travel unexpectedly.””

“Did she tell you where?””

“No. But she sounded frightened.””

I looked at Robert.

“Can you find out whether she's been contacted by Vanessa?””

He nodded.

I ended the call.

Daniel was standing beside the car.

“Michael, I need to tell you something about Mom.””

I turned.

“Go ahead.””

“After Dad died, she started receiving money from a private account.””

“How much?””

“I don't know exactly. But it wasn't a regular pension.””

“Who paid her?””

He shook his head.

“Vanessa.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

“She said it was compensation for helping with the trust paperwork.””

I felt something twist in my chest.

My mother had not simply signed one document.

She had been receiving money from the woman who had spent years trying to gain control of my children.

“Did you receive money too?””

Daniel nodded.

“Some.””

“How much?””

“About forty thousand.””

I looked at him.

“Forty thousand dollars?””

He nodded.

I stepped back.

“Was there anyone in this family who wasn't taking money from her?””

Daniel lowered his head.

“I know I don't deserve forgiveness.””

I didn't answer.

Because forgiveness was not the issue anymore.

The children needed protection.

Sarah deserved the truth.

And whoever had altered her medical records needed to be held accountable.

Margaret Collins agreed to meet us at her home that afternoon.

Her house stood at the end of a quiet street, surrounded by mature trees and a neatly maintained garden.

She was seventy-two, with silver hair and a sharp, observant expression.

When she opened the door, she looked at me for several seconds.

Then she said something unexpected.

“You have Sarah's eyes.””

I swallowed.

“You knew my wife?””

“I knew her very well.””

She stepped aside.

“Come in.””

We sat in a small sitting room filled with photographs.

One showed my father standing beside Margaret at a company event.

Another showed Sarah holding baby Lily.

I stared at it.

Margaret noticed.

“Sarah brought that photograph to me shortly before she died.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because she wanted me to remember what she was fighting for.””

My throat tightened.

“What was she fighting for?””

Margaret folded her hands.

“The children's inheritance. And the truth about Vanessa.””

I leaned forward.

“Please explain.””

Margaret went to a cabinet and returned with a thick folder.

“Your father discovered that Vanessa had been using her position to access private financial records. He removed her from the company, but he didn't pursue legal action because he believed she had only acted on someone else's instructions.””

“Whose instructions?””

Margaret opened the folder.

“Daniel's.””

I looked at my brother.

He stared at the carpet.

Margaret continued.

“Your father believed Daniel was being pressured by people who had discovered his business debts. Vanessa was one of them.””

I turned toward Daniel.

“Is that true?””

He nodded.

“I was in trouble. I borrowed money from the wrong people.””

“Who?””

“I won't name them without a lawyer.””

Margaret nodded.

“That is wise.””

She slid a document across the table.

It was a trust agreement.

I recognized my father's signature.

Margaret pointed to a paragraph.

“Your father appointed me as independent protector of the children's inheritance. Sarah was given authority to oversee educational expenses, but she could not transfer the principal without my approval.””

“So Vanessa couldn't take the money?””

“Not legally.””

“Then why did she try?””

Margaret looked at me.

“Because she believed she could persuade you to sign away your rights.””

I thought about the guardianship documents.

The proposed consent form.

The false beneficiary designation.

Everything suddenly made more sense.

“She wanted me to sign the transfer.””

Margaret nodded.

“And she needed the children's trust to appear unstable so she could justify taking control.””

Robert examined the document.

“This agreement is still valid?””

“Yes. I have the original.””

I looked at Margaret.

“Why didn't you contact me after Sarah died?””

Her expression softened.

“Because Sarah asked me not to.””

“Why?””

“She believed you were being watched. She feared that if I approached you, Vanessa would know the trust was still protected.””

I felt a chill.

“Watched by whom?””

Margaret looked toward the window.

“Someone who had access to your home, your finances, and your family's private communications.””

I thought about the recordings.

The emails.

The photographs of my children.

Then Margaret opened another folder.

Inside was a copy of an email sent by Sarah three days before she died.

Margaret, I believe Vanessa has found someone inside the hospital who is willing to help her. I have not been able to identify the person yet.

I stared at the page.

“Did you know who it was?””

“No.””

“Did Sarah ever tell you anything else?””

Margaret hesitated.

Then she reached into the folder and produced a small photograph.

It showed Vanessa standing beside a man in a hospital corridor.

I recognized him immediately.

Dr. Martin.

But there was something else.

Behind them, reflected in the glass door, stood another person.

A woman holding a handbag.

My mother.

I looked up.

“Mom was there.””

Margaret nodded.

“She told me she had gone to visit Sarah. But when I asked why she was standing outside the doctor's office, she refused to answer.””

I felt sick.

“Did you confront her?””

“Yes.””

“What did she say?””

Margaret's expression hardened.

“She said she was trying to prevent a family scandal.””

I leaned forward.

“What scandal?””

Margaret closed the folder.

“Sarah had discovered that Vanessa wasn't simply after the money.””

I looked at Robert.

Then back at Margaret.

“What else did she want?””

Margaret took a deep breath.

“She wanted access to a document your father had hidden before he died.””

“What document?””

Margaret reached into a locked drawer and removed a sealed envelope.

On it was my father's handwriting.

To be opened only if Vanessa returns.

I stared at the envelope.

Margaret handed it to me.

“Your father left instructions that I should give this to you if Sarah's concerns ever became reality.””

I opened it.

Inside was a single page.

My father's handwriting was unmistakable.

Michael,

If this letter has reached you, then Vanessa has returned, and I fear my suspicions were correct.

There is something you must understand about your family.

The person Vanessa is protecting is not Daniel.

I looked up.

Margaret's face had gone pale.

I continued.

It is someone who has been part of our family for much longer than you realize.

May you like

At the bottom of the page was one final sentence.

And that person has a legal claim to the children that you have never been told about.
