Chapter 6: My Brother's Confession

I didn't answer.
I stood on the sidewalk outside the café, watching cars move through the morning traffic while my brother's words echoed in my head.
I was the one who helped Vanessa find the account.
“Daniel,” I said slowly, “what did you just tell me?””
He exhaled.
“Not over the phone.””
“No. You're going to explain it now.””
“Michael, please. Just come home.””
“Which home? Mine or yours?””
Silence.
That silence told me more than his words had.
I looked through the café window.
Claire was still sitting at the table.
She had noticed me standing outside.
I lowered my voice.
“Did you know Sarah was afraid of Vanessa?””
“Yes.””
“Did you know about the hospital?””
Another pause.
“Yes.””
My stomach twisted.
“Did you know Mom was involved?””
“I know what happened.””
I felt my hand begin to shake.
“Then why did you help me look through those documents last night?””
“Because I wanted to see what you had found.””
I closed my eyes.
For months, I had been telling myself that Vanessa had manipulated everyone around her.
But now I was beginning to understand that she might never have been working alone.
“Daniel, where are you?””
“At your house.””
“Why?””
“Vanessa came back.””
My head snapped up.
“What?””
“She arrived about twenty minutes ago. She says she wants to speak to you.””
I looked at the café.
“Don't let her inside.””
“I already have.””
I almost shouted.
“Get her out!””
“Michael, she's crying. She says she wants to explain.””
“Daniel, listen to me. Do not believe anything she says.””
He lowered his voice.
“There's something you don't know about Sarah's death.””
I felt my knees weaken.
“What?””
“She wasn't supposed to die that night.””
I stopped breathing.
“What does that mean?””
“Come home, Michael.””
The call ended.
I immediately called Robert.
He answered after two rings.
“Michael?””
“I need you to come to my house. Now.””
“What happened?””
“My brother just admitted he helped Vanessa find Sarah's trust account. He also said he knows what happened at the hospital.””
Robert's tone changed.
“Do not confront either of them alone. Are the children with you?””
“No. They're with my brother's wife.””
“Keep them there. I'm coming.””
I looked toward the café window.
Claire was standing now.
I returned inside.
She saw my expression and understood immediately that something had changed.
“What's wrong?””
“My brother just admitted he helped Vanessa.””
Claire sat down slowly.
“Oh, Michael.””
“You knew?””
“No. But Sarah suspected him.””
I pulled out the letter.
“Why didn't she tell me directly?””
Claire shook her head.
“She wanted to. But she believed you would protect him because he was your brother.””
I stared at her.
“What did she mean by the account?””
Claire took a small notebook from her bag.
“Sarah gave me this too.””
I looked at it.
“Why didn't you give me everything at once?””
“Because I wanted to make sure you were safe before I handed it over.””
She opened the notebook to a marked page.
There were several numbers written in Sarah's handwriting.
One was a bank account reference.
Another was a date.
And the third was a name.
*MARTIN — PRIVATE CONSULTATION.*
I recognized the doctor's name immediately.
“Dr. Martin?””
Claire nodded.
“Sarah believed he had access to the trust records.””
I looked at the numbers.
“Can you tell me what this account is?””
“No. But Sarah said it was connected to your father's estate.””
I photographed the page and sent it to Robert.
His reply came almost immediately.
Do not access or transfer anything. I recognize this reference. I need to check the original trust documents.
I put the phone away.
Claire touched my arm.
“Michael, there's one more thing.””
I looked at her.
“Sarah told me she had discovered that someone was withdrawing money from the children's trust.””
My chest tightened.
“How much?””
“I'm not sure. But she said the withdrawals were happening through a secondary account.””
“Who had access?””
“Your father, Sarah, and one other person.””
“Who?””
Claire looked at me.
“Your brother.””
I stared at her.
For the first time that morning, I felt genuinely afraid.
Not of Vanessa.
Not even of my mother.
Of the possibility that my own brother had helped destroy my family.
I thanked Claire and left.
Robert arrived at my house shortly after ten.
I parked outside and called him before entering.
“Are you there?””
“Yes. I'm in my car.””
“Good. Wait for me.””
We walked inside together.
The front door was unlocked.
Voices came from the living room.
Vanessa was sitting on the sofa.
Daniel stood near the window.
A glass of water rested on the coffee table.
She looked up when I entered.
“Michael.””
I didn't respond.
Daniel turned.
“Finally.””
I looked at my brother.
“You said you wanted to explain.””
He nodded.
“Sit down.””
“No.””
Vanessa stood.
“Michael, please. We can work this out.””
I looked at her.
“You have one minute to tell me why you were planning to take my children.””
Her expression tightened.
“That is not what I was doing.””
I took the guardianship document from my jacket.
“Then explain this.””
She glanced at it.
“I was trying to protect them.””
“From me?””
“From your absence.””
I laughed once.
“My absence?””
“You travel constantly. You leave them with other people. I was the one feeding them, taking them to school, making sure they had everything.””
“You locked my daughter in a pantry.””
“I never locked her in there.””
Mason's voice suddenly came from the hallway.
“Yes, you did.””
I turned.
My son stood beside the staircase.
Daniel's wife had brought the children back, and they had apparently arrived while we were talking.
Lily was holding Sarah's photograph.
Vanessa's expression changed.
“Lily, sweetheart, you don't understand what happened.””
Lily stepped closer to me.
“Don't call me sweetheart.””
Nobody moved.
My daughter looked at Vanessa.
“You said Mommy didn't want me.””
Vanessa's mouth opened.
Lily continued.
“You said Daddy would send me away if I told him.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I never said that.””
Mason stepped forward.
“I heard you.””
Daniel's wife came in behind them.
“Michael, I thought you should know they were both asking to come home.””
I nodded.
“Thank you.””
Then I turned back to Vanessa.
“Leave.””
She stared at me.
“You're making a terrible mistake.””
“Leave my house.””
She grabbed her purse.
But before she reached the door, Daniel spoke.
“Wait.””
I turned toward him.
“What?””
He looked at Vanessa.
“You said you wouldn't tell him.””
Vanessa's face hardened.
“Daniel, don't.””
He rubbed his forehead.
“Michael, I need to tell you something.””
I folded my arms.
“Go ahead.””
He looked at the children.
“Not in front of them.””
“No more secrets.””
Daniel swallowed.
“Fine.””
He sat down.
“Four years ago, Dad left money in a separate investment account. It was meant to support the children, but there was a problem with the original paperwork.””
“What problem?””
“The account had been created through a company that was later dissolved.””
I stared at him.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because I was handling some of the administrative work.””
“And?””
Daniel looked down.
“I transferred money out of it.””
The room went silent.
“How much?””
He didn't answer.
“How much, Daniel?””
“About two hundred thousand dollars.””
My knees nearly buckled.
“Two hundred thousand?””
He nodded.
“Dad had left instructions that the money was only to be accessed for the children's education. I needed it temporarily.””
“For what?””
He stared at the floor.
“Business debts.””
I felt sick.
“You stole from your niece and nephew?””
“I intended to pay it back.””
“When?””
“I don't know.””
Vanessa interrupted.
“Michael, Daniel didn't do this alone.””
I turned toward her.
“What?””
She looked at my brother.
“You promised me you wouldn't put everything on me.””
Daniel stood.
“Shut up, Vanessa.””
She laughed bitterly.
“You're going to pretend you weren't involved?””
I looked between them.
“Explain.””
Vanessa pulled a document from her purse.
It was a bank transfer authorization.
Daniel's signature was at the bottom.
But beside it was another signature.
My mother's.
I stared at the page.
“What is this?””
Daniel looked away.
Vanessa answered.
“Your mother approved the transfers.””
My heart sank.
“Why?””
“Because she knew the money was being used to settle your father's debts.””
“That doesn't make sense.””
Vanessa took another step.
“Your father didn't leave the money where you think he did. There was another account. One that Sarah discovered.””
I looked at Robert.
He was examining the document carefully.
Then Vanessa said something that made Daniel close his eyes.
“Sarah didn't just discover the missing money. She discovered that your father had left the entire account to someone else.””
I turned toward her.
“Who?””
Vanessa looked directly at me.
“Me.””
For a moment, I couldn't process the word.
“You?””
She nodded.
“Your father promised me that money.””
“That is impossible.””
“Ask your mother.””
I looked at Daniel.
He said nothing.
Then Vanessa reached into her purse and produced a second document.
A document with my father's signature.
At the top were the words:
*BENEFICIARY DESIGNATION — FINAL AMENDMENT.*
I took it from her.
The signature looked genuine.
But the date was impossible.
It was dated three days after my father had died.
I looked up.
“This is forged.””
Vanessa smiled faintly.
“That's what Sarah said.””
My blood ran cold.
Robert took the paper from me.
“I'm keeping this as evidence.””
Vanessa's expression changed.
“That's not your property.””
Robert looked at her.
“Then you should have brought an original.””
She stepped backward.
Daniel suddenly spoke.
“Michael, there's something else.””
I turned.
He looked like a man who had finally run out of lies.
“Sarah didn't die because of an accident.””
My throat tightened.
“What are you saying?””
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“She told me the doctor would make sure Sarah couldn't interfere with the account anymore.””
Vanessa's face turned white.
“Daniel!””
He continued.
“I thought she meant Sarah would be declared mentally unfit. I didn't know what she was planning.””
I stared at him.
“You knew she was meeting Dr. Martin?””
He nodded.
“Several times.””
“Did you know she went into Sarah's hospital room?””
“Yes.””
The room seemed to tilt.
“And you said nothing?””
Daniel began crying.
“I was scared.””
I stepped closer.
“You were scared?””
He nodded.
“Vanessa had recordings of me discussing the missing money. She said she'd send them to the police if I exposed her.””
Robert immediately took out his phone.
“Don't say anything else until we've documented this properly.””
But Daniel wasn't finished.
He reached into his jacket and pulled out a small key.
“I kept something from Sarah's estate. Something Vanessa never found.””
He placed it on the coffee table.
“What is it?”” I asked.
“A key to the safety deposit box.””
“Where?””
“First National Bank.””
I looked at the key.
Daniel wiped his face.
“Sarah told me to give it to you if anything happened to her.””
I stared at him.
“Why didn't you give it to me four years ago?””
He looked at Vanessa.
“Because she told me the box contained something that could send all of us to prison.””
I looked at the key again.
Then I looked at the woman who had spent years pretending to love my children.
“What is inside?””
Daniel swallowed.
“Sarah's original medical report.””
Robert went completely still.
I picked up the key.
Then Daniel whispered the final sentence.
“And Michael, there's a second name on that report. The person who authorized the changes wasn't Dr. Martin.””
May you like
He looked directly at me.
“It was your mother.””
