Chapter 14: The Daughter My Mother Hid

I found my mother sitting in her living room when I arrived.
She looked up as I entered.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then I placed my father's letter on the table.
“Who is Julia Mercer?””
Her face drained of color.
“Where did you find that?””
“In Dad's archive.””
She closed her eyes.
“Michael, please.””
“Is Vanessa your daughter?””
My mother began crying.
I felt the answer before she gave it.
“Yes.””
I stepped backward.
“How long?””
“Thirty-one years.””
I stared at her.
“She's older than Daniel.””
“Yes.””
“Who was her father?””
My mother looked down.
“Your father.””
The room seemed to shrink.
“So Vanessa is my sister?””
She shook her head.
“No. She's your half-sister.””
I gripped the back of a chair.
“Why did everyone tell me she was Rachel's daughter?””
“Because Rachel agreed to raise her.””
“Why?””
My mother wiped her face.
“Your father and I were having problems. He had a relationship with me before we married, but I was very young. When I became pregnant, my family pressured me to give the baby away.””
I stared at her.
“You gave your daughter to someone else?””
“I thought I was doing what was best.””
“And Dad knew?””
“He arranged for Rachel to take her. Rachel was a close friend. She promised to keep Vanessa safe.””
I sat down slowly.
“Then why did Vanessa come back into our lives?””
My mother looked toward the window.
“Because your father contacted her shortly before he died.””
“What did he want?””
“He wanted to acknowledge her. He wanted to make things right.””
I laughed bitterly.
“And you couldn't let that happen?””
“I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“That Daniel and you would reject me. That our family would fall apart.””
I looked at her.
“So you let Vanessa into our family without telling me who she was.””
“She said she only wanted to know her father.””
“And you believed her?””
My mother nodded.
“At first.””
I leaned forward.
“When did it change?””
“After your father died. She discovered that he had left instructions for Margaret to protect the children's trust. She believed she had been denied what was hers.””
“So she married me to get access to the money?””
My mother didn't answer.
“Mom.””
“Yes.””
The word landed like a stone.
I stood and walked to the window.
I remembered Vanessa standing beside me at Sarah's funeral.
Her hand on my shoulder.
Her comforting voice.
Her promises that I didn't have to face grief alone.
She had entered my life while I was broken.
And she had known exactly who I was.
“Did Sarah know?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“Your father had written her a letter. He told her Vanessa was his daughter and explained that he wanted to acknowledge her.””
I turned.
“Why didn't Sarah tell me?””
“Because Vanessa threatened her.””
“What kind of threat?””
My mother looked frightened.
“She said she would reveal Daniel's financial crimes and tell everyone that your father had hidden money from the company.””
I shook my head.
“That doesn't explain why Sarah kept quiet about Vanessa's identity.””
“She wanted to protect you until she could prove what Vanessa was doing.””
I stared at my mother.
“And you helped Vanessa.””
“I thought I could keep her under control.””
“You couldn't even keep her away from my children.””
My mother lowered her head.
I took out my phone.
“Rachel says she has evidence about Julia.””
My mother's face changed.
“Where is Rachel?””
“I don't know.””
“Don't trust her.””
I laughed once.
“You don't get to tell me who to trust anymore.””
Before she could respond, Robert called.
“Michael, we found something.””
“What?””
“The original adoption records. Margaret has confirmed that Rachel was only Vanessa's guardian. Your mother was listed as the biological mother, and your father signed the supporting declaration.””
I closed my eyes.
“Can we prove it?””
“The records appear genuine, but we'll have them authenticated.””
“Where is Vanessa?””
“We're still looking. More importantly, we've located Dr. Martin.””
“Where?””
“He has agreed to speak with investigators.””
I stood straighter.
“Why?””
“He says Vanessa has been threatening him.””
I looked at my mother.
“Tell me everything you know about the medication.””
She began shaking.
“I don't know the exact names.””
“Then tell me what happened.””
She spoke slowly.
“Vanessa told me Sarah was having severe anxiety. She said Dr. Martin had prescribed something to calm her.””
“Did you see Sarah take it?””
“No.””
“Did you see Vanessa give it to her?””
My mother nodded.
“Vanessa took the bottle from me. She went into Sarah's room.””
“Then?””
“I waited outside. A few minutes later, I heard Sarah call my name.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“What did she say?””
My mother covered her mouth.
“She said, 'Evelyn, don't let her give me anything else.''”
I couldn't speak.
My mother continued.
“I opened the door, but Vanessa told me Sarah was confused. She said I should leave.””
“And you did?””
“Yes.””
I stared at her.
“Mom, Sarah was asking you for help.””
“I know.””
“You walked away.””
My mother collapsed into tears.
“Yes.””
I stepped back.
“Did you tell anyone?””
“No.””
“Not even me?””
“No.””
For a moment, I wanted to scream.
Instead, I turned toward the door.
“Michael, wait.””
I stopped.
My mother reached into a drawer and removed a small voice recorder.
“There's something else.””
I looked at it.
“What is that?””
“Your father recorded a conversation with Vanessa. I kept it because she threatened to expose me if I ever spoke.””
I took it.
“Have you listened to it?””
“Once.””
“What does it say?””
My mother looked at me.
“Vanessa tells your father that she will destroy the family if he refuses to give her access to the trust.””
I pressed the playback button.
Static filled the room.
Then my father's voice.
“Vanessa, you cannot demand money from children who have done nothing to you.””
A woman's voice answered.
“They have everything. I have nothing.””
My father replied:
“You have a family.””
The woman laughed.
“No. I have a mother who abandoned me and a father who pretends I don't exist.””
Then my father's voice became quiet.
“I will tell Michael the truth.””
The recording crackled.
Vanessa's voice returned.
“If you do, Sarah will learn everything too. And then we'll see how much of your perfect family survives.””
The recording ended.
I stared at the device.
My mother began crying again.
“She knew about Sarah's suspicions long before you did.””
My phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number.
It contained a photograph of Lily and Mason sitting at a table.
My blood ran cold.
Beneath it were seven words:
Bring me the archive key. Come alone.
I immediately called Rebecca.
She answered, frightened.
“Michael?””
“Where are the children?””
“With me. Why?””
“Are they safe?””
“Yes. They're watching a movie.””
“Don't open the door for anyone. Call the police if anyone approaches.””
“What happened?””
“Vanessa knows where they are.””
I heard Rebecca move away from the children.
“Michael, what are you going to do?””
I looked at the message.
“I am going to make sure she never gets near them again.””
Then another message arrived.
You have one hour.
I showed it to Robert when he called back.
“Don't go,” he said immediately.
“I won't.””
“Good. Send me the photograph and message. We'll coordinate with the authorities.””
I forwarded everything.
Then I looked at the recorder in my hand.
There was one final thing my mother had said.
“Your father didn't leave Vanessa nothing,” she whispered.
“He left her a letter.””
“Where?””
“In the archive. But it wasn't about money.””
I turned.
“What was it about?””
My mother stared at me.
“He wanted her to know that he had always known she was his daughter.””
I felt my throat tighten.
“Then why did he write that she wasn't his granddaughter?””
My mother whispered:
“Because he knew someone had falsified the DNA report to make her believe she was entitled to Rachel's inheritance too.””
I looked at the recorder.
At the photograph of my children.
At the woman who had called herself my wife.
And I finally understood the scale of the lie.
Vanessa had spent her entire life believing she had been denied a family.
Then she had entered mine and tried to take it apart.
But the worst truth was still waiting.
Dr. Martin had agreed to testify.
May you like
And he had one condition.
He wanted to speak to me privately about Sarah's final hours.
