Chapter 10: The Truth That Set Me Free

For several minutes, neither my father nor I moved.

The voicemail played again in my head.

*The person who caused the accident was never outside the car.*

The words felt impossible.

Because they changed everything.

All my life, I had imagined my mother’s final moments.

A dark road.

A stranger nearby.

A terrible accident.

But now there was another possibility.

Someone had been inside the car.

Someone my mother trusted.

Someone close enough to hear her fear.

Someone close enough to know what she had discovered.

My father slowly sat down.

“No.””

His voice was barely a whisper.

“Daddy?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at the photograph again.

“This doesn’t make sense.””

“Who was in the car?””

He didn’t answer.

And I knew why.

Because there was only one person who could answer.

The person who had been hiding pieces of the truth for years.

We found Vanessa at the old apartment building where she had been staying.

She opened the door and immediately knew why we were there.

“You found something.””

Daniel held up the photograph.

“You need to tell me everything.””

Vanessa looked at the picture.

Then closed her eyes.

“I was afraid this day would come.””

“Afraid?””

His voice was filled with anger.

“My daughter was locked in a room. You forged documents. You lied to me for years. And now I find out you knew what happened to my wife.””

Vanessa looked down.

“I know.””

“Then explain.””

She stepped aside.

“Come in.””

The apartment was small.

Nothing like our house.

No decorations.

No family pictures.

Just boxes.

Like she had already accepted she would never return.

We sat at the table.

Vanessa looked at me.

“I owe you the truth.””

I didn’t answer.

She nodded.

“I know you may never forgive me.””

My father stared at her.

“Start talking.””

Vanessa took a deep breath.

“Your mother called me the night of the accident.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“She called you?””

“Yes.””

“What did she say?””

“She said she had found proof against Mark.””

“Then why was she driving?””

“Because she was trying to get away.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“From Mark?””

Vanessa nodded.

“She believed he was following her.””

“Then how did she crash?””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“Because someone else was in the car.””

My father leaned forward.

“Who?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You.””

The room froze.

“What?””

“Not you now.””

Her voice shook.

“You from that night.””

Daniel went pale.

“What are you saying?””

“Your wife wasn’t alone.””

She looked at me.

“You were in the back seat.””

I knew that.

But hearing it again felt different.

“Your mother picked you up from your grandmother’s house.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“I remember.””

“She called me after.””

“Why?””

“Because she was scared.””

“About Mark?””

“Yes.””

Vanessa’s hands tightened together.

“She told me she was going to meet someone.””

“Who?””

“Someone who could expose him.””

Daniel stared.

“Who?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Your business partner.””

My father froze.

“What?””

“The person you trusted most.””

Silence.

Then Daniel whispered:

“James?””

I didn’t know that name.

But my father did.

And the look on his face told me everything.

“James was there?””

Daniel’s voice was shaking.

Vanessa nodded.

“He was the one who convinced your wife to bring the documents.””

“Why?””

“Because she thought he was helping her.””

“And he wasn’t.””

“No.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“He wanted the evidence
