Chapter 5: The Custody Plan

The word *custody* looked like it belonged to someone else’s life.

Not mine.

Not my father’s.

Not our house.

But there it was.

Printed clearly across the top of the document.

*Temporary Custody Transfer Agreement.*

My fingers went cold.

“Why does it have my name on it?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

He was still staring at the papers like they had appeared out of nowhere.

“Daddy?””

He folded the document quickly.

Too quickly.

That was how I knew it was bad.

When adults tried to hide something, they always moved faster.

“Lily, I need you to go upstairs for a minute.””

“No.””

He looked surprised.

“I need to understand what this is.””

“So do I.””

His expression softened.

I stepped closer.

“Please don’t send me away.””

The pain in his face was immediate.

“Lily.””

“Because that’s what Vanessa wanted, right?””

“No.””

“She said they would take me away.””

Daniel went completely still.

“What exactly did she say?””

I swallowed.

“She said if you called someone, they would take me away from you first.””

He stared at the document in his hand.

Then at me.

“That wasn’t a warning.””

“What was it?””

“A threat.””

The front door suddenly opened.

Both of us turned.

Vanessa stood there.

She wasn’t surprised to see us.

Actually, she looked calm.

Too calm.

She closed the door behind her.

“You found it.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“You left it here.””

“No.””

She walked into the room.

“I wanted you to find it.””

I felt my father step slightly in front of me.

“Why?””

Vanessa placed her purse on the table.

“Because I’m tired of pretending.””

“Pretending what?””

“That everything is fine.””

Daniel laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

“Everything is not fine because you locked my daughter in a room and forged my signature.””

Her face hardened.

“I never forged anything.””

“Then explain the transfers.””

She didn’t react.

That scared me more.

A normal person would have panicked.

Vanessa just looked annoyed.

“You went through my things.””

“My accounts.””

“Our finances.””

“My money.””

She tilted her head.

“See? This is exactly the problem.””

“What problem?””

“You don’t see me as your wife anymore.””

Daniel stared.

“You stole from me.””

“I protected myself.””

I felt confused.

“Protected yourself from what?””

Vanessa looked at me.

And for a second, I wished she hadn’t.

Because the way she looked at me wasn’t angry.

It was like I was a problem she had already solved.

“From this.””

She pointed at me.

Daniel’s voice changed.

“Don’t.””

“No, Daniel. She needs to hear this.””

“She is a child.””

“She is old enough to understand.””

I stepped backward.

“Understand what?””

Vanessa walked closer.

“You think your father and I were happy?””

Daniel interrupted.

“Don’t do this.””

“You think this was a perfect family?””

I looked at my dad.

He looked away.

That scared me.

Because there were things he didn’t know how to answer.

Vanessa continued.

“For years, I tried.””

“By starving her?”” Daniel said.

Her face tightened.

“I tried to create boundaries.””

“You locked her upstairs.””

“She refused to respect me.””

“She’s twelve.””

“You always say that.””

“Because it’s true.””

Vanessa laughed softly.

“You know what your problem is, Daniel?””

He said nothing.

“You confuse being a good father with rescuing her from every consequence.””

My stomach twisted.

I knew those words.

They sounded exactly like the things Vanessa always said.

Consequences.

Lessons.

Discipline.

She had different names for the same thing.

Making me feel small.

Daniel picked up the custody document.

“What is this?””

Vanessa looked at it.

“A backup plan.””

“For what?””

“For when this marriage ended.””

My father stared.

“You planned our divorce?””

“I planned for reality.””

“You were preparing to leave?””

“No.””

She smiled.

“I was preparing for you to fail.””

The silence afterward was heavy.

I looked at Daniel.

His face had changed.

Not anger.

Something deeper.

Betrayal.

“Why?””

Vanessa sighed.

“Because I knew eventually Lily would turn you against me.””

I shook my head.

“I didn’t.””

She ignored me.

“I knew one day you would choose her.””

Daniel looked at her.

“She’s my daughter.””

“Exactly.””

The way she said it made my skin crawl.

“You never loved me the same way after she came back into your life.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“What?””

Daniel looked confused.

“After she came back?””

Vanessa smiled.

There it was again.

That little crack in the story.

“You never told her?””

“Told me what?””

Nobody spoke.

I looked between them.

“What?””

Daniel’s voice became quieter.

“Vanessa.””

She crossed her arms.

“You should tell her.””

“Tell me what?””

My father looked uncomfortable.

And that scared me.

Because my father was never uncomfortable around me.

Finally, he said:

“When your mother died…”

I stopped breathing.

He continued carefully.

“There was a period where you stayed with your grandmother.””

I nodded slowly.

I remembered.

Only pieces.

Different house.

Different bedroom.

My father crying a lot.

“I remember.””

Daniel swallowed.

“During that time, I was struggling.””

Vanessa smiled.

“I helped him.””

I looked at her.

“What does that mean?””

“She means she was there for me,” Daniel said.

“And I was the person who helped him rebuild his life.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Then you came back.””

The room became colder.

“You were eight years old.””

I remembered that.

I remembered running into my father’s arms.

I remembered thinking everything would be okay again.

But I didn’t remember Vanessa looking angry.

“She had just lost her mother,” Daniel said.

“And you never saw anything else.””

“What else?””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“She changed everything.””

“That’s not true.””

“She became the center of your world.””

“She was a grieving child.””

“She became your excuse.””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“Enough.””

“No.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You want honesty? Fine.””

She pointed at me.

“Everything started falling apart when she came back.””

My chest hurt.

I wanted my father to say something.

Anything.

He did.

“You don’t get to blame a child for our problems.””

Vanessa stared at him.

Then smiled.

“That’s what I thought you’d say.””

She reached into her purse.

And pulled out another folder.

My heart dropped.

Not again.

Daniel looked at it.

“What is that?””

“More proof.””

“Of what?””

She placed the folder on the table.

“Of what Lily does when nobody is watching.””

Daniel didn’t touch it.

“What are you talking about?””

Vanessa opened it.

Inside were printed messages.

Emails.

Photos.

She pulled out one page.

“Lily has been telling people I abuse her.””

I froze.

“What?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Lily?””

“I didn’t!””

Vanessa placed the paper down.

“Her school counselor.””

Daniel picked it up.

His eyes moved quickly.

Then his face changed.

I couldn’t read it.

“Daddy?””

He didn’t answer.

Vanessa watched him.

“She has been building a story against me for months.””

“That’s impossible.””

“Is it?””

Daniel looked at the page again.

I stepped closer.

“Let me see.””

He hesitated.

Then handed it to me.

I looked.

My name was there.

But the words weren’t mine.

Someone had written:

*I don’t feel safe at home. My stepmother wants me gone.*

My breathing stopped.

Because I had said something similar.

But not like that.

Not those exact words.

“I didn’t write this.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Of course you didn’t.””

The fake sympathy in her voice was worse than anger.

“You probably don’t remember.””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“Where did you get this?””

“I told you.””

“Where?””

She smiled.

“From the person helping me.””

“Who?””

Vanessa walked toward the door.

Then stopped.

“You already know.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“Mark.””

She didn’t deny it.

And that was the answer.

“Who is he?””

Vanessa looked back.

“The person who knows the truth about Lily.””

My father stepped forward.

“You’re lying.””

“Am I?””

She opened the door.

“Ask him yourself.””

“Where is he?””

Vanessa smiled.

Then said:

“He’s waiting.””

“For what?””

She looked directly at me.

“For the moment Daniel finally realizes the daughter he’s protecting is the reason he lost everything.””

The door closed.

I stood there frozen.

Daniel immediately grabbed his phone.

But before he could call anyone, a message appeared.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

*Meet me alone if you want to know what Lily really did.*

Daniel read it.

Then looked at me.

And I saw something I had never seen before.

Fear.

Not fear of Vanessa.

Not fear of losing money.

Fear of losing the truth.

Because whoever Mark was…

He knew something about me.

Something my own father didn’t know.

May you like

And the worst part was—

I didn’t know either.
