Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Smile

I barely slept that night.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Vanessa standing in the hallway with that piece of paper in her hand.

I saw her smile when she said they could take me away from my father.

And I heard the sentence that kept repeating in my head.

*Why would I need to force Lily to sign anything if I already had proof?*

Proof.

The word followed me into every dream.

By morning, the house felt different.

Not peaceful.

Not safe.

Just quiet.

The kind of quiet that comes after someone breaks something and everyone is waiting to see who admits it.

I woke up on the couch downstairs.

At some point during the night, Daniel had carried me there because he didn’t want me sleeping alone upstairs.

A blanket covered me.

My father was sitting in the chair across from me.

Still wearing the same clothes from yesterday.

He hadn’t slept either.

When my eyes opened, he immediately leaned forward.

“Hey.””

His voice was soft.

“Good morning.””

I sat up slowly.

“Did you sleep?””

He smiled sadly.

“A little.””

I knew he was lying.

My dad was terrible at lying.

I learned that when I was six and he tried to pretend he wasn’t crying during a sad movie.

“You’re mad at me,” I whispered.

His expression changed.

“What?””

I looked down at the blanket.

“Because Vanessa said I’m trouble.””

Daniel immediately shook his head.

“No.””

“But you looked confused.””

He was quiet.

Then he moved closer.

“Lily, listen to me.””

I looked up.

“You are my daughter.””

My eyes filled.

“No matter what anyone says.””

I nodded.

But before I could answer, his phone rang.

Daniel looked at the screen.

His face tightened.

It was Vanessa.

He answered.

“Where are you?””

Her voice was loud enough that I could hear pieces of it.

“You left last night without letting me explain.””

Daniel stood.

“Because my daughter was locked in her room.””

“You’re exaggerating again.””

“I’m not.””

A pause.

Then Vanessa’s tone changed.

Softer.

More controlled.

“Daniel, I know you’re upset. But you’re only hearing Lily’s side.””

He looked at me.

Then turned away.

“Then tell me yours.””

“I will. But not while you’re angry.””

“Where are you?””

“Somewhere calm.””

“That doesn’t answer my question.””

She sighed.

“I went to my sister’s.””

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“Vanessa.””

“I love you.””

The words surprised me.

Daniel didn’t respond.

“I love this family,” she continued.

“I have spent years trying to make this house work.””

Years.

That word bothered me.

Because Vanessa had only lived with us for two years.

“I never wanted to hurt Lily,” she said.

Daniel looked toward me.

“Then why did she say you did?””

Silence.

Then Vanessa said:

“Because she hates me.””

My stomach dropped.

Daniel closed his eyes.

“No.””

“She does.””

“No, Vanessa.””

“She thinks I replaced her mother.””

I froze.

Nobody talked about my mom.

Not like that.

My mother had died when I was eight.

After that, it was always just Dad and me.

Until Vanessa came.

“She has never accepted me,” Vanessa said.

Daniel’s voice softened slightly.

“Maybe because you never tried to understand her.””

I looked at him.

I had never heard him say that before.

Not to Vanessa.

Not about Vanessa.

There was a long pause.

Then she whispered:

“You really believe her?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

And somehow, that silence hurt Vanessa more than anything he could have said.

The call ended.

For several minutes, neither of us spoke.

Then Daniel grabbed his keys.

“Where are we going?””

“To find the truth.””

An hour later, we were sitting in Daniel’s car outside our house.

He had asked me to stay with him while he searched through documents inside.

“Why are we waiting?””

He looked at the house.

“Because I need to think.””

I watched him.

“About what?””

He sighed.

“About how I missed this.””

The sadness in his voice made my chest hurt.

“You didn’t know.””

“But I should have.””

“No.””

He looked at me.

“You shouldn’t have had to beg for food in your own home.””

I looked down.

Neither of us spoke for a while.

Then the front door opened.

Vanessa stepped outside.

She looked surprised to see us.

“Daniel?””

He got out.

“Where are the kids?””

“With my mother.””

“Good.””

She folded her arms.

“You’re really doing this?””

“Doing what?””

“Investigating me.””

He stared at her.

“I’m trying to understand what happened.””

“You already decided.””

“No.””

He held up the paper.

“I’m trying to understand why you wrote this.””

Vanessa looked at it.

Then smiled.

A small, confident smile.

“Because it’s true.””

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“Explain.””

She walked closer.

“Lily has been struggling for months.””

I stepped out of the car.

“What?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“There she is.””

Daniel moved in front of me.

“Don’t.””

Vanessa ignored him.

“You want to know why I kept records?””

She reached into her bag.

“I knew nobody would believe me.””

She pulled out a folder.

My heart sank.

A folder.

Just like the paper.

Prepared.

Waiting.

Daniel took it.

“What is this?””

“Everything.””

He opened it.

Inside were printed emails.

School notes.

Photos.

Even handwritten pages.

I watched his face change as he flipped through them.

“What are these?””

“Evidence.””

“Of what?””

“That Lily has behavioral problems.””

I felt cold.

“That’s not true.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Do you want to tell him?””

“Tell him what?””

She turned to Daniel.

“She threatened to run away last month.””

My mouth opened.

“I didn’t!””

“You did.””

“No, I said I wanted to go to Grandma’s!””

“Because you were angry.””

“Because you yelled at me!””

Daniel looked between us.

“Wait.””

Vanessa continued.

“She throws things when she’s upset.””

“I dropped a cup!””

“She screams.””

“Because you locked me away!””

“Lily.””

Daniel raised his voice slightly.

“Both of you stop.””

The silence returned.

He looked through the folder.

Then he pulled out one page.

“What is this?””

Vanessa looked away.

“What?””

“This.””

He held up the page.

“It’s from the school counselor.””

My heart raced.

“What does it say?””

Daniel read silently.

Then his eyebrows pulled together.

“Why does it say Lily reported feeling unsafe at home?””

Vanessa froze.

Only for a second.

But it was enough.

“You’re misunderstanding.””

“Am I?””

“Yes.””

Daniel held the paper.

“Because this says she was worried about being punished for telling the truth.””

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“She twisted things.””

I looked at my father.

“I told someone.””

He looked at me.

“When?””

I swallowed.

“Two weeks ago.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

I looked down.

“Because Vanessa said you would think I was lying.””

Daniel became completely still.

That sentence landed harder than anything else.

Because it wasn’t just about what happened.

It was about how afraid I had become.

He looked at Vanessa.

“Did you tell her that?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“Did you?””

“She misunderstood.””

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“She didn’t.””

For the first time, Vanessa looked genuinely angry.

“You’re making me the bad guy because a child knows how to cry.””

Daniel stared at her.

“She’s not crying right now.””

Vanessa looked at me.

And I saw it.

The same expression she had when she locked my door.

The same coldness.

The same certainty.

“You have no idea what you’ve done,” she whispered.

Daniel stepped forward.

“What does that mean?””

She smiled.

“You’ll see.””

She turned and walked back toward the house.

Daniel followed.

“Vanessa!””

She stopped at the door.

Then looked back.

“Oh, and Daniel?””

“What?””

“You should check your bank account.””

His face changed.

“What?””

“Because if you’re looking for someone who has been lying in this house…”

She smiled.

“You might want to look closer to home.””

The door closed.

I looked at my father.

“Daddy?””

He was staring at the house.

Then he took out his phone.

His fingers moved quickly.

A few seconds later, his face lost all color.

“What happened?””

He didn’t answer.

“Daddy?””

He looked at me.

And for the first time since he broke down my bedroom door, I saw fear in his eyes.

“Lily…”

His voice was barely a whisper.

“She wasn’t trying to get you taken away.””

I froze.

“What?””

Daniel looked at the screen again.

“She was building a case.””

“Against who?””

He swallowed.

May you like

Then he said the words that changed everything.

“Against me.””
