Chapter 7: The Night Everything Changed

My father didn’t drive home.

He sat there on the side of the road with the engine off, staring straight ahead.

The rain had started falling.

Small drops at first.

Then heavier.

They hit the windshield like tiny knocks from someone trying to get inside.

“Daddy?””

He didn’t answer.

“Who was there?””

His hands tightened around the steering wheel.

“Lily…”

“Was Mark there when Mom died?””

He closed his eyes.

And that was when I knew.

The answer was yes.

I had spent years believing the night my mother died was simple.

A car accident.

A rainy road.

A terrible moment nobody could change.

That was the story I knew.

The story everyone gave me.

But now I was sitting beside my father, and I realized there was a part of that night he had never shared.

A part that scared him.

“Tell me.””

My voice was quiet.

“I’m old enough.””

He looked at me.

“You’re still my little girl.””

“I know.””

“And I wanted to keep you away from that memory.””

“But I already live with it.””

His face broke slightly.

Not completely.

Just enough for me to see how much pain he carried.

Finally, he nodded.

“Okay.””

He looked down.

“The night your mother died wasn’t just an accident.””

My heart stopped.

“What does that mean?””

“She was driving home from work.””

I nodded.

I knew that.

“She called me before it happened.””

I had never heard this before.

“What did she say?””

Daniel swallowed.

“She sounded scared.””

The rain became louder.

“She told me someone had been following her.””

I froze.

“What?””

“I thought she was just nervous.””

“Why?””

“Because your mother had been under a lot of stress.””

He looked away.

“I told her to come home and we would talk.””

“And then?””

“She never made it.””

I felt cold.

“Did the police know?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because they couldn’t prove anything.””

My fingers curled around the seatbelt.

“Who was following her?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

I already knew.

“Mark.””

He nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

The name felt heavier now.

Not just a stranger.

Not just someone connected to Vanessa.

Someone connected to the worst night of my life.

“Why is Vanessa working with him?””

“I don’t know.””

“You married her.””

His face tightened.

“I know.””

“Did she know?””

Silence.

Then:

“I think she knew more than she told me.””

My stomach twisted.

“How could you marry someone who knew?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“Because I didn’t know.””

He looked at me.

“Vanessa entered my life after your mother died. She helped me when I was broken.””

“But she knew?””

“I don’t know when she found out.””

That was the hardest part.

My father wasn’t defending her.

He wasn’t making excuses.

He genuinely didn’t know.

Then his phone buzzed.

Another message.

He looked at it.

I saw the fear return.

“What did he say?””

Daniel turned the phone toward me.

A message from Mark.

*You need to stop protecting Lily from the past. She deserves to know what happened.*

I looked at my father.

“Why does he keep saying that?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

“Daddy.””

He took a deep breath.

“Because there is something else.””

“What?””

He hesitated.

Then said:

“The night your mother died, she wasn’t alone.””

My heart started beating faster.

“Who was with her?””

He looked at me.

“You.””

I stopped breathing.

“What?””

“You were in the car.””

I knew that.

I remembered pieces.

A stuffed rabbit.

A song playing.

My mother’s voice.

But nothing else.

“I don’t remember.””

“I know.””

“Why don’t I remember?””

“Because you were eight.””

He looked down.

“And because after the accident, you were unconscious for days.””

I stared at him.

“But why would Mark say I know something?””

“Because…”

He stopped.

“Because what?””

Daniel looked like he hated himself for saying the next words.

“Because you were the only witness.””

We went home after that.

But home didn’t feel like home anymore.

Every room had a memory attached to it.

Every wall had a question.

I sat on my bed while Daniel searched through old boxes in the closet.

“What are you looking for?””

“Something your mother left behind.””

“What?””

“I don’t know.””

That sounded impossible.

But somehow, nothing felt impossible anymore.

After an hour, he found a small wooden box.

He sat beside me.

“I haven’t opened this in years.””

“What is it?””

“Your mother’s things.””

He opened it carefully.

Inside were old photographs.

Letters.

A necklace.

And a small recorder.

I looked at it.

“What is that?””

Daniel picked it up.

“I’ve never seen this before.””

He pressed the button.

At first, there was only static.

Then a voice.

My mother’s voice.

My entire body froze.

“Daniel, if you’re listening to this…”

My father covered his mouth.

The recording continued.

“I don’t know what will happen next.””

The sound was shaky.

Like she was scared.

“But I need you to know something.””

Daniel looked at me.

Neither of us moved.

“Someone has been asking questions about Lily.””

My heart dropped.

“About me?””

My mother continued.

“I think they believe she saw something.””

The room became silent.

My father looked horrified.

“Your mother knew.””

The recording continued.

“I don’t want Lily involved. She’s too young. If anything happens to me, Daniel, you have to protect her.””

A crackle.

Then:

“Don’t trust anyone who suddenly appears after I’m gone.””

The recording stopped.

Neither of us spoke.

The message was short.

But it changed everything.

Because Vanessa hadn’t just entered our lives after my mother died.

She had appeared after a warning.

Daniel sat frozen.

Then he whispered:

“She knew.””

I looked at him.

“Who?””

He looked at the recorder.

“Vanessa.””

My stomach dropped.

Before I could respond, the front door opened downstairs.

Both of us froze.

“Daniel?””

Vanessa’s voice.

She was home.

My father stood immediately.

“Stay here.””

“No.””

“Lily.””

“I want to know.””

His expression softened.

But he nodded.

“Stay behind me.””

We walked downstairs.

Vanessa stood in the living room.

She looked at the recorder in Daniel’s hand.

And for the first time…

She looked afraid.

“What did you find?””

Daniel stared at her.

“You knew.””

Her face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“Knew what?””

“You knew my wife was investigating something.””

Vanessa said nothing.

“You knew about Mark.””

Still nothing.

“You knew about the accident.””

Her expression hardened.

“Be careful, Daniel.””

“No.””

He stepped closer.

“You lied to me for years.””

“I protected you.””

“You manipulated me.””

“I loved you.””

“Then why did you help someone who hurt my family?””

The room went silent.

Vanessa looked at me.

Then back at Daniel.

“You really want the truth?””

“Yes.””

She slowly smiled.

Not the fake smile.

Not the calm one.

A tired, bitter smile.

“Fine.””

She reached into her purse.

And pulled out a photograph.

She placed it on the table.

Daniel looked down.

Then his face changed.

“What is this?””

I stepped closer.

The picture showed my mother.

But she wasn’t alone.

She was standing beside someone.

Someone familiar.

Someone I recognized.

My father stared at the photograph.

Because beside my mother was…

him.

But the date on the back made no sense.

It was taken three months after my father said my mother had died.

May you like

And underneath the date was one sentence written in black ink.

*Your wife was alive after the accident.*
