Chapter 8: The Photograph That Broke the Past

Nobody moved.

Not Daniel.

Not Vanessa.

Not me.

The photograph sat on the table between us like a bomb waiting for someone to touch it.

My father picked it up slowly.

His hands were shaking.

“This is impossible.””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Daniel looked at the back again.

The date.

The handwriting.

The words.

*Your wife was alive after the accident.*

He looked up.

“Where did you get this?””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“From someone who knew the truth.””

“Mark.””

She didn’t deny it.

My father’s face hardened.

“You have been working with him.””

“I have been trying to survive.””

“By lying to me?””

“By protecting myself.””

I stepped closer.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa looked at me.

For once, she didn’t look angry.

She looked tired.

“I know you hate me.””

I said nothing.

“But you don’t know what happened.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

He pointed at the photograph.

“You don’t get to change the subject.””

“I’m not.””

“You knew about my wife.””

“Yes.””

The answer came so quickly that it shocked us.

Daniel went silent.

“You knew she might still be alive?””

Vanessa looked away.

“I knew there were questions.””

“What questions?””

She took a breath.

“Questions nobody wanted answered.””

My father laughed bitterly.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I expect you to remember.””

“Remember what?””

“That your wife was investigating someone before she died.””

Daniel froze.

I saw it.

A tiny reaction.

A memory.

Vanessa noticed too.

“You remember.””

He looked away.

“What did she tell you?””

“She told me she was afraid.””

My father stared.

“When?””

“Before the accident.””

I looked between them.

“How do you know all this?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

That was the first time she looked uncertain.

Finally, she said:

“Because your mother came to me.””

The room changed.

“What?””

Daniel’s voice was barely a whisper.

“Why would she come to you?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Because she thought I could help.””

My father shook his head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“That makes no sense.””

“It will.””

She walked toward the table.

“Your wife knew someone was following her. She knew someone was trying to get information from her.””

“About what?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“About Lily.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Why me?””

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Vanessa said:

“Because your mother believed you saw something.””

My breathing stopped.

A memory flashed.

Rain.

Headlights.

A loud crash.

A man standing near the road.

But it disappeared before I could hold onto it.

“I don’t remember.””

Vanessa studied my face.

“Maybe you do.””

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

“Don’t.””

“I’m not hurting her.””

“You’re confusing her.””

“No.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You have spent years telling yourself she was too young to know.””

Her voice lowered.

“But children remember things adults wish they would forget.””

I looked at my father.

“Is that why you never talked about it?””

He didn’t answer.

That was an answer.

Later that night, after Vanessa left, Daniel sat with me in the living room.

The photograph was still on the table.

He had not moved it.

Like he was afraid touching it would make everything real.

“Do you remember anything?””

He asked quietly.

I shook my head.

“I don’t know.””

“Try.””

I closed my eyes.

At first, nothing.

Then pieces.

My mother’s voice.

The smell of rain.

The sound of tires.

Someone yelling.

I opened my eyes.

“I remember someone outside the car.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“Man or woman?””

“A man.””

His face changed.

“What did he look like?””

I squeezed my eyes shut.

“I can’t see his face.””

“That’s okay.””

“He was wearing something dark.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Anything else?””

I thought harder.

Then I remembered.

A word.

A name.

“He said something.””

“What?””

I looked at him.

“He said… Vanessa.””

My father went completely still.

“What?””

“I don’t know.””

“Are you sure?””

“I think.””

Daniel stood up and walked away.

He ran both hands through his hair.

“No.””

“Daddy?””

“No.””

He looked terrified.

“What?””

He whispered:

“Your mother never told me Vanessa was involved.””

The room became cold.

“Then why is she?””

He didn’t answer.

Because he didn’t know.

And that scared both of us.

The next morning, Daniel received a call.

It was from a private investigator.

The one he hired after finding the financial records.

I sat beside him while he listened.

“What did you find?””

A pause.

Then:

“Are you sure?””

Another pause.

His face changed.

“Send everything.””

He ended the call.

“What happened?””

He looked at me.

“The investigator found Mark.””

“Who is he?””

Daniel sat down.

“His full name is Mark Reynolds.””

“Is he Vanessa’s friend?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

Daniel looked at the photograph.

“He worked with your mother.””

My heart skipped.

“What?””

“He was part of the same company.””

“Why didn’t I know?””

“Because after your mother died, he disappeared.””

“Where?””

“Nobody knew.””

I looked at the photograph.

“So why is he back?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Then his phone buzzed.

Another message.

This time from Mark.

*You finally know enough to ask the right questions.*

Daniel stared.

Then another message appeared.

*But you still don’t know the biggest one.*

My father typed:

*What do you want?*

The reply came immediately.

*The truth.*

Daniel looked angry.

“You want the truth?””

He typed again.

*Then tell me why my wife’s death was covered up.*

The three dots appeared.

Typing.

Typing.

Then:

*Because she wasn’t the target.*

I leaned closer.

Another message appeared.

*Lily was.*

My father immediately stood.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

He didn’t answer.

The phone buzzed again.

*Your daughter saw something that night. Something she was never supposed to see.*

I felt sick.

“I don’t remember.””

Daniel grabbed my hand.

“It’s okay.””

But his voice didn’t sound like he believed that.

The final message came.

*Ask Vanessa why she was at the accident scene before the police arrived.*

Daniel stared.

Then slowly looked toward the front door.

Because at that exact moment…

Someone knocked.

Three slow knocks.

My father moved in front of me.

“Stay back.””

The knocking continued.

Then Vanessa’s voice came from outside.

“Daniel.””

He opened the door slightly.

“What are you doing here?””

Her face was pale.

She looked scared.

Not angry.

Not confident.

Scared.

“You need to listen to me.””

Daniel stepped outside.

“No more lies.””

“I’m not lying.””

“Then answer one question.””

She swallowed.

“What?””

“Why were you at the accident scene before the police?””

Vanessa froze.

I watched her face.

And I knew.

My father knew.

The silence was the answer.

“Vanessa?””

Her eyes moved toward me.

Then back to Daniel.

Finally, she whispered:

“Because your wife called me before she crashed.””

Daniel stopped breathing.

“What?””

“She didn’t call you.””

My father’s face changed.

“She called me.””

“Why?””

Vanessa looked at me.

And the fear in her eyes was something I had never seen before.

“Because she knew someone was coming for Lily.””

The world seemed to stop.

Daniel grabbed the doorframe.

“Who?””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

But before she could answer…

A car engine roared from the street.

A black vehicle sped away.

Daniel looked toward it.

Then back at Vanessa.

She whispered:

“He heard me.””

“Who?””

Vanessa’s voice shook.

“Mark.””

And then she said the words that made my father turn pale.

“He was never helping me.””

May you like

A pause.

“He was using me to get to Lily.””
