Chapter 1 - THE NIGHT I FINALLY SAW HER

I heard my daughter scream before I even reached the kitchen.
“Daddy!”
The sound was so frightened that for one terrible second, I thought she was calling for me from somewhere outside the house.
I had only been home for a few minutes.
My business trip had ended earlier than expected, and I had decided not to tell anyone.
I wanted to surprise Lily.
She was six years old, and she still got excited whenever I came home unexpectedly.
Usually, she would run through the hallway in her pajamas, throw herself into my arms, and tell me everything that had happened while I was away.
This time, there was no laughter.
Only screaming.
I dropped my suitcase beside the front door and ran.
“Lily!”
I reached the kitchen.
Then I stopped.
My brain refused to understand what my eyes were seeing.
My six-year-old daughter was on the floor.
Rachel had one fist tangled in Lily’s hair.
She was dragging her across the kitchen tiles.
Lily's knees scraped against the floor as she tried to pull herself away.
Her pink sweater was twisted around her shoulders.
One of her shoes had fallen off.
Her face was wet with tears.
“Please!”
She screamed again.
“Daddy, please!”
Something inside me went cold.
“Rachel!”
My voice echoed through the kitchen.
My wife froze.
For half a second, neither of us moved.
Then Rachel released Lily.
My daughter immediately crawled toward me.
I dropped to my knees and pulled her into my arms.
She was shaking so violently that I could feel every tremor against my chest.
“Daddy.”
“I've got you.”
“Please don't leave me here.”
I closed my eyes.
Those six words hurt more than anything.
“I won't.”
She buried her face against my shoulder.
I held her tighter.
Rachel stood several feet away.
Her breathing was heavy.
Her hair was disheveled.
But what disturbed me most was how quickly her expression changed.
The anger disappeared.
Her face became soft.
Almost innocent.
“She attacked me,” Rachel said.
I looked at her.
“What?”
“She attacked me.”
Lily shook her head against my chest.
“No.”
Rachel pointed toward her.
“She threw something at me.”
“No!”
Lily cried.
Rachel's voice became louder.
“She has been acting like this for weeks.”
I stared at my wife.
“She's six.”
“That doesn't mean she can't be violent.”
I looked down at Lily.
Her little fingers were gripping my shirt.
She wasn't trying to attack anyone.
She was terrified.
I stood while holding her.
“Do not come near her.”
Rachel's eyes widened.
“Daniel, you're misunderstanding.”
“I saw you.”
“You didn't see what happened before.”
“I saw you dragging our daughter across the floor.”
“She wouldn't listen.”
“She is a child.”
“She needs discipline.”
I felt my jaw tighten.
“What kind of discipline involves pulling a six-year-old by her hair?”
Rachel looked away.
Then tears appeared in her eyes.
“I can't believe you're treating me like this.”
I said nothing.
She wiped her face.
“I have been taking care of her while you've been gone.”
“You were supposed to take care of her.”
“I have done everything for this family.”
I looked at the kitchen.
A chair was overturned.
Lily's crayons were scattered beneath the table.
Her drawing had been torn in half.
A small pink hair clip lay beside the cabinet.
Then I saw Rachel's phone.
It was sitting on the kitchen counter.
The screen was illuminated.
A small red recording symbol was visible.
I stared at it.
Rachel followed my eyes.
Her face changed.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
She moved toward the counter.
I stepped between her and the phone.
“Don't.”
She stopped.
“Give me my phone.”
“Why were you recording?”
“I wasn't.”
“The screen says otherwise.”
She reached for it.
I picked it up first.
Rachel's voice became sharp.
“Daniel, give it back.”
I pressed the screen.
A video appeared.
It had started several minutes earlier.
Lily was sitting at the kitchen table.
She was coloring.
A picture of a man holding a little girl.
Me.
Her father.
Rachel walked into the room.
“What are you drawing?”
Lily smiled.
“Daddy.”
Rachel stared at the picture.
“You think about him all the time.”
Lily looked confused.
“He's my daddy.”
Rachel walked closer.
“You love him more than me?”
Lily shook her head.
“I love you too.”
Rachel took the drawing.
“No, you don't.”
She tore it in half.
Lily immediately began crying.
“Please don't.”
Rachel's voice became colder.
“You always cry for him.”
“Because I miss him.”
“He doesn't miss you.”
The room became silent.
I felt my stomach twist.
Rachel continued.
“He only comes home because he has to.”
Lily shook her head.
“That's not true.”
Rachel leaned closer.
“If you keep behaving like this, he will send you away.”
“No.”
“Yes.”
Lily's lower lip trembled.
“I want Daddy.”
Rachel picked up the phone.
The recording continued.
“Maybe if I drag you around once, you'll finally learn.”
Then the video shook.
Rachel grabbed Lily's hair.
The image jumped.
Lily screamed.
“Stop!”
I watched myself watching the recording.
My hands were shaking.
Rachel whispered:
“I didn't mean it.”
I looked at her.
The video continued.
Rachel dragged Lily across the floor.
Exactly as I had just witnessed.
Then Rachel released her.
She stepped back.
She looked directly into the phone camera.
And her expression changed.
She began crying.
She whispered:
“Daniel will believe me.”
The video ended.
Silence filled the kitchen.
Rachel's face was white.
I looked at Lily.
Then at Rachel.
“You recorded yourself.”
“I was angry.”
“You planned to blame her.”
“I didn't.”
“You were creating evidence against your own daughter.”
Rachel shook her head.
“I was scared.”
“Of what?”
She didn't answer.
I called 911.
Rachel's eyes widened.
“No.”
I held Lily tighter.
“I'm not letting this happen again.”
“Daniel, please.”
I didn't respond.
She stepped closer.
“You're going to destroy our family.”
I looked at her.
“You already did.”
The police arrived within minutes.
Two officers entered the kitchen.
They separated Rachel from us.
One female officer crouched near Lily.
“What's your name?”
“Sophie.”
“No.”
My daughter corrected herself.
“Lily.”
The officer smiled gently.
“And how old are you?”
“Six.”
“Do you feel safe?”
Lily looked at me.
Then she whispered:
“Only with Daddy.”
The officer looked at me.
Then she looked toward Rachel.
“Has this happened before?”
Lily lowered her eyes.
Rachel immediately said:
“No.”
Lily whispered:
“Yes.”
Everyone became silent.
The officer moved closer.
“Can you tell me?”
Lily's fingers tightened around mine.
“She tells me not to tell Daddy.”
“Why?”
“Because Daddy will leave her.”
I felt my chest tighten.
“Lily…”
She looked up at me.
“Mommy said you always choose grown-ups.”
I closed my eyes.
I had been gone too often.
I had trusted Rachel too easily.
I had believed every explanation.
Whenever Lily became quiet during our calls, Rachel told me she was tired.
Whenever Lily didn't want to talk, Rachel said she was being difficult.
Whenever Lily cried, Rachel said she was having another tantrum.
I had believed my wife.
Now I understood.
Lily had been trying to tell me.
I simply hadn't listened.
The officer photographed the kitchen.
Then she picked up Lily's hair clip.
She photographed the overturned chair.
The torn drawing.
The phone.
Everything.
Another officer came in from the backyard.
“Sir.”
I looked at him.
“We found footprints near the kitchen window.”
“What?”
“Someone appears to have been standing outside.”
I stared.
“Could it be mine?”
“No.”
He showed me the photograph.
The footprints were larger.
Adult.
Male.
Leading from the fence toward the kitchen window.
My stomach tightened.
“Could someone have been watching the house?”
“Possibly.”
I looked at Rachel.
She looked away.
The officer noticed.
“Do you know anyone who might be doing that?”
Rachel said nothing.
I asked:
“Rachel?”
She didn't answer.
The officer wrote something down.
Then the female officer asked:
“Has anyone else had access to this house?”
“My brother.”
“Name?”
“Michael Carter.”
Rachel looked at me.
Her expression changed.
I noticed.
“Why did you look at me like that?”
“I didn't.”
“You did.”
She shook her head.
“I am exhausted.”
The officer interrupted.
“We also need to speak to you about another matter.”
“What?”
She showed me a document.
A custody petition.
My name was listed.
Rachel was requesting emergency custody of Lily.
I stared at it.
“When was this filed?”
“Two weeks ago.”
My blood ran cold.
“Two weeks?”
“Yes.”
I looked at Rachel.
“You filed for custody two weeks ago?”
“I was worried about her.”
“Without telling me?”
“You were away.”
“That doesn't answer the question.”
She began crying.
“I thought you were going to abandon us.”
“Then why were you trying to take my daughter?”
“She needs stability.”
“You dragged her across the kitchen floor.”
Rachel looked down.
The officer took the document.
“There's another issue.”
She showed me a second page.
“My signature.”
I stared.
It looked like mine.
Almost perfect.
But I had never signed it.
“I didn't sign this.”
The officer nodded.
“Then we have a possible forgery.”
Rachel's face became pale.
“I didn't do that.”
“Who did?”
“I don't know.”
I looked at the document again.
At the bottom was the name of the attorney who had prepared it.
Richard Cole.
My father's former attorney.
A man I hadn't spoken to in years.
Then Lily suddenly tugged my sleeve.
“Daddy.”
“Yes?”
“Mommy has another phone.”
I looked at Rachel.
She froze.
“Where?”
Lily pointed upstairs.
“In Mommy's drawer.”
Rachel's face went completely white.
The officers searched the bedroom.
They found it.
A second phone.
Locked.
But when the screen lit up, a message appeared.
HE KNOWS ABOUT THE RECORDING. GET SOPHIE OUT TONIGHT.
I stared at the screen.
“Who sent that?”
Nobody answered.
Then another message appeared.
DON'T LET DANIEL FIND THE BOX.
I looked at Rachel.
“What box?”
She closed her eyes.
May you like
And whispered:
“It's too late.”
