Chapter 13 - THE TARGET WAS ME

The words followed me all the way to the hospital.

The crash hadn't been meant for Claire.

It had been meant for me.

Three years earlier, I was supposed to meet Claire at the warehouse.

I had been delayed by a business meeting.

Claire went alone.

That delay had saved my life.

I had always believed it was an accident.

Now I knew.

Someone had planned to kill me.

Claire had discovered the plan.

She had gone to the warehouse to warn me.

Instead, she became the target.

My uncle was in intensive care.

We waited outside his room.

Eventually, a doctor allowed us inside.

He was barely conscious.

I stood beside his bed.

“Who ordered the attack?”

He looked at me.

“Your mother.”

I closed my eyes.

“Why?”

“She wanted to stop you.”

“From what?”

“Finding the original trust.”

I stared.

“She knew I would inherit it.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did she put Lily in danger?”

“She didn't.”

“What?”

“She wanted Lily protected.”

I shook my head.

“She used Rachel.”

“Yes.”

“She manipulated everyone.”

“Yes.”

“But why?”

“Because she believed you would destroy the family.”

I felt anger rising.

“What family?”

He looked at me.

“The family she spent her entire life protecting.”

Then he whispered:

“The trust wasn't created to preserve wealth.”

“What was it created for?”

“To preserve evidence.”

I already knew that.

But he continued.

“Evidence against the government.”

I stared.

“What?”

“Your grandfather was involved in illegal contracts decades ago.”

“Defense contracts?”

“Yes.”

“And my biological father discovered it?”

“Yes.”

“That is why he was killed?”

“Yes.”

“By my grandfather?”

“Yes.”

I felt sick.

My uncle continued.

“Your mother inherited the evidence.”

“She could have gone to the police.”

“She tried.”

“What happened?”

“People around her disappeared.”

“Who?”

“Witnesses.”

I looked at Claire.

She understood.

My mother had become ruthless because she believed the system was already compromised.

She built the trust.

She created shell companies.

She hid evidence.

She manipulated people.

And eventually she became the same kind of person she claimed to be fighting.

My uncle whispered:

“She crossed the line.”

“What line?”

“She started deciding who deserved to know the truth.”

I stepped back.

That explained everything.

My mother hadn't simply protected the family.

She had controlled it.

Then my uncle said:

“Richard has the original ledger.”

“What ledger?”

“The one that proves everything.”

“Where?”

He closed his eyes.

“Under the church.”

“What church?”

“St. Mary's.”

Claire suddenly gasped.

“The chapel?”

My uncle nodded.

“Your mother hid it there.”

We left immediately.

St. Mary's was an old stone church outside the city.

The basement had been sealed for years.

We found the hidden compartment beneath the altar.

Inside was a leather ledger.

Hundreds of pages.

Names.

Payments.

Companies.

Politicians.

Judges.

Lawyers.

Police officials.

Everything.

At the very back was a list of deaths.

My biological father.

Several witnesses.

And Claire.

Beside Claire's name was a handwritten note:

STATUS: SURVIVED.

I couldn't breathe.

Then I found my own name.

DANIEL CARTER — TARGET.

The date beside it was the night of the crash.

And beneath my name was another.

LILY CARTER — FUTURE CONTROL HOLDER.

Someone had planned everything around my daughter.

The ledger proved it.

But there was one more page.

A signature.

My mother's.

Under it:

Proceed with extraction. No lethal force unless necessary.

I looked at Claire.

“She didn't order my death.”

“No.”

“Richard did.”

“Yes.”

My mother had ordered me taken.

Richard had changed the order.

That distinction didn't erase her crimes.

But it mattered.

Then we heard footsteps.

I turned.

Richard stood at the end of the church.

He was holding a gun.

Claire stepped behind me.

Richard smiled.

“Give me the ledger.”

“No.”

“You don't understand what happens if that becomes public.”

“People go to prison.”

“Governments fall.”

“Maybe they should.”

Richard laughed.

“You think you're a hero?”

“No.”

“Then give it to me.”

I shook my head.

He raised the weapon.

Before he could move, Officer Miller stepped from behind a pillar.

“Drop it.”

Richard looked around.

More officers appeared.

He slowly lowered the gun.

Then he smiled.

“You think this ends with me?”

Officer Miller handcuffed him.

“No.”

Richard looked at me.

“You still haven't asked about your mother.”

I stared.

“What about her?”

“She wasn't protecting you.”

“What do you mean?”

“She was protecting someone else.”

“Who?”

Richard smiled.

“Your daughter.”

I felt cold.

“What does that mean?”

Richard leaned closer.

“Ask your mother who Lily's real father is.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

Richard was taken away.

Claire looked at me.

“Daniel…”

I shook my head.

“No.”

We returned home.

My mother was waiting.

I placed the ledger on the table.

She looked at it.

Then at me.

“You found it.”

“Yes.”

She closed her eyes.

“I knew you would.”

I stared.

“Richard said Lily's father isn't who I think.”

My mother went pale.

Claire looked at her.

“What does that mean?”

My mother began crying.

“I wanted to tell you.”

“Tell me now.”

She looked at Lily's photograph.

Then she whispered:

“Daniel isn't Lily's biological father.”

The room disappeared.

I couldn't speak.

Claire looked at me.

“I never knew.”

My mother continued:

“Lily's father died before she was born.”

I stared.

“Who?”

She gave me a name.

A name that made no sense.

Because I had known that man.

He had been my closest business partner.

And he had died two years before Lily was born.

My mother whispered:

“Ethan Bennett.”

The same family name as my biological father.

The same bloodline.

The same trust.

Lily wasn't merely the heir.

She was the last direct descendant.

And that meant someone had been trying to control her since before she was born.

Then my mother opened another envelope.

Inside was a DNA report.

I looked at the final line.

LILY CARTER — DIRECT DESCENDANT OF THE BENNETT TRUST.

But beneath it was something even more shocking.

PATERNAL LINE: UNKNOWN.

My mother looked at me.

“Because the sample was destroyed.”

I stared.

“By whom?”

May you like

She answered:

“Your father.”
