Chapter 7 - THE WOMAN WHO KNEW ABOUT THE CRASH

We escaped through the back entrance.

My father drove.

I sat beside him.

Neither of us spoke for several minutes.

Rachel and the woman had disappeared.

But now I knew who she was.

Claire's mother.

A woman who was supposed to have died before Claire.

A woman connected to the accident.

A woman Richard had apparently brought to the lake house.

My father finally spoke.

“She knows everything.”

“Then why didn't you tell me?”

“Because she was being watched.”

“By Richard?”

“Yes.”

“What did she do?”

“She helped arrange Claire's disappearance.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“She believed hiding Claire was the only way to keep her alive.”

“Then why did she leave?”

“Because she discovered Richard had found her.”

My father stopped at a gas station.

He turned toward me.

“Daniel, there is something you need to understand.”

“What?”

“Richard doesn't want Lily's money.”

I stared.

“Then what does he want?”

“The evidence inside the trust.”

“What evidence?”

“Evidence capable of exposing politicians, judges, executives, and law-enforcement officials.”

I felt sick.

“The trust is bigger than Carter Industries.”

“Yes.”

My father explained that my grandfather had built a network decades ago.

Companies.

Foundations.

Political connections.

Illegal payments.

The trust had been created to preserve evidence in case the network ever turned against the family.

Claire discovered it.

Then she became a target.

Rachel had been recruited to monitor me because my father believed Richard would eventually use Lily.

But Rachel fell in love with me.

When she refused to cooperate, Richard threatened her.

“Why did she hurt Lily?”

“She was trying to create a custody case.”

“She almost killed my daughter.”

“I know.”

“Don't excuse her.”

“I am not.”

My father looked down.

“I failed too.”

We arrived at a safe house.

Inside was Claire's mother.

Her name was Evelyn.

She looked at me.

“You look like your mother.”

I stared.

“How did you know my mother?”

“I knew her.”

“Did you know Claire?”

“She was my daughter.”

“Why did you let me believe she was dead?”

Evelyn began crying.

“I thought she would be safer.”

“Safer from what?”

“From Richard.”

She told me that Claire had discovered the trust shortly before her death.

She had tried to expose Richard.

The crash was arranged.

But my father intervened.

Claire survived.

She was hidden.

Evelyn helped keep her location secret.

Then Richard found her.

Claire had been moved again.

“Where is she now?”

Evelyn looked at my father.

He nodded.

“She is close.”

“How close?”

A voice came from the hallway.

“Closer than you think.”

I turned.

Claire stood there.

Alive.

My wife.

My knees almost gave out.

She was thinner.

Her hair was shorter.

But her eyes were the same.

“Daniel.”

I couldn't move.

Then she ran toward me.

I caught her.

We held each other.

Neither of us spoke.

I cried against her shoulder.

She whispered:

“I am sorry.”

I shook my head.

“You're alive.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you come home?”

“I tried.”

“What happened?”

“Richard found me.”

She told me she had spent years moving between safe locations.

My father had protected her.

But she had been terrified that returning home would put Lily in danger.

Then she told me something else.

“Rachel saved me.”

I froze.

“What?”

“Rachel discovered Richard's plan.”

“When?”

“Before the crash.”

“She knew?”

“She didn't know everything.”

Claire explained that Rachel had secretly warned her.

She had tried to stop the operation.

But Richard threatened her.

“He told her he would kill Daniel and Lily.”

I looked down.

Rachel had been both victim and aggressor.

But Claire wasn't finished.

“There is someone worse.”

“Who?”

She looked toward my father.

“Your brother.”

I stared.

“Michael?”

“Yes.”

“He helped Richard.”

“He did.”

“Why?”

“Because he wanted the trust.”

My father shook his head.

“Michael believed Richard would give him control.”

Claire nodded.

“He betrayed everyone.”

Then she handed me a small drive.

“This contains the original evidence.”

I looked at it.

“What is it?”

“Everything.”

“Then why didn't you release it?”

“Because one file is missing.”

“What file?”

“The recording proving who ordered the crash.”

“Where is it?”

Claire looked at me.

“Inside the house.”

“What house?”

“Our house.”

My stomach dropped.

“Someone hid it there.”

“Who?”

Claire whispered:

“Your father.”

I turned.

My father looked away.

Then the front door opened.

Michael walked inside.

He was holding a gun.

My heart stopped.

“Michael?”

His eyes were filled with tears.

“I am sorry.”

Claire stepped behind me.

Michael raised the weapon.

“I don't want to hurt anyone.”

“Then put it down.”

“I can't.”

“Why?”

May you like

“Because Richard has Lily.”

Everything stopped.
