Chapter 10 - THE WOMAN WHO CONTROLLED THE FAMILY

My mother sat at the dining table.
Nobody spoke.
Lily was asleep upstairs.
Claire sat beside me.
My father stood near the window.
Rachel remained across the room.
I placed the death certificate in front of my mother.
“You forged this.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To protect Robert.”
“From what?”
“From Richard.”
I stared.
“Richard worked for you.”
“Yes.”
“Then why did he betray you?”
“Because he became ambitious.”
My mother explained that she had discovered Richard stealing from the trust.
She confronted him.
He threatened to expose the family's secrets.
She staged my father's death to make Richard believe Robert was gone.
But Robert stayed alive.
In hiding.
My mother then recruited Rachel.
She needed someone close to me.
Someone who could monitor whether Richard was approaching.
Rachel was chosen.
But Rachel fell in love with me.
Then Claire discovered the trust.
Everything changed.
My mother tried to convince Claire to remain silent.
Claire refused.
Richard found out.
The crash happened.
My father saved Claire.
And my mother hid them both.
I listened in silence.
“You let me believe Claire was dead.”
“Yes.”
“You let me raise Lily alone.”
“I thought it would protect you.”
“You thought.”
My mother looked down.
“I was wrong.”
I stood.
“You were all wrong.”
Nobody argued.
Then Lily appeared at the top of the stairs.
“Daddy?”
I turned.
“Go back to bed.”
She shook her head.
“I had a bad dream.”
I walked toward her.
She wrapped her arms around me.
My mother watched us.
For the first time, I saw regret on her face.
Lily looked at her.
“Who is she?”
I didn't know what to say.
My mother answered.
“I'm your great-grandmother.”
Lily frowned.
“Are you nice?”
My mother began crying.
“I want to be.”
Lily thought about it.
“Then be nice.”
The simplicity of those words destroyed my mother.
She covered her face.
My father turned away.
Claire cried quietly.
Rachel looked at Lily.
The little girl had no idea how many adults had ruined their lives because of money.
I carried her back upstairs.
When I returned, my mother had opened another folder.
“The final evidence is here.”
She handed it to me.
Inside were records proving Richard's network.
But there was one file missing.
The file proving who ordered Claire's crash.
My mother looked at me.
“I never saw it.”
“Who did?”
She hesitated.
“Your grandfather.”
“He's dead.”
“Yes.”
“Then who has the recording?”
She looked toward Rachel.
Rachel's face went pale.
“I don't know.”
My mother said:
“Your husband.”
I stared at her.
“My husband?”
“Richard.”
“But he's in custody.”
“He recorded everything.”
My father suddenly looked toward the window.
A car had stopped outside.
Police vehicles followed.
Officer Miller called.
“Daniel, don't leave the house.”
I answered.
“What happened?”
“Richard escaped custody.”
My stomach dropped.
“How?”
“We don't know.”
My mother closed her eyes.
Then whispered:
“He's coming for the recording.”
The front door opened.
A man's voice echoed through the house.
“Daniel.”
I froze.
Richard.
He had found us.
He stepped into the hallway.
But he wasn't alone.
Beside him stood Michael.
My brother.
Michael looked at me.
“I am sorry.”
Richard raised a small recorder.
“This contains the truth.”
I stared.
“What truth?”
Richard smiled.
“Who really ordered Claire's death.”
Then he pressed play.
A woman's voice filled the room.
My mother's voice.
“I want the accident to happen tonight.”
I looked at my mother.
She collapsed into her chair.
Claire covered her mouth.
My father whispered:
“No.”
The recording continued.
My mother's voice said:
“Make sure Daniel never learns the truth.”
I felt the room disappear around me.
The woman who claimed she had protected us had ordered the attack.
My mother looked at me.
“I can explain.”
I stepped backward.
“You ordered my wife's murder.”
“No.”
“I heard your voice.”
“I never wanted her dead.”
Richard smiled.
“But someone did.”
He pressed another button.
A second voice appeared.
A man's voice.
My grandfather.
“Do it.”
The room went silent.
Richard looked at me.
“Your mother gave the order.”
“But your grandfather gave the final command.”
I stared at both recordings.
The truth was worse than I had imagined.
Then the police sirens grew louder outside.
Richard looked toward the door.
He knew his time was over.
But before he could move, Michael stepped between us.
He grabbed the recorder.
And threw it onto the floor.
It shattered.
Everyone froze.
Michael looked at me.
“There's another copy.”
“Where?”
He pointed toward Lily's bedroom.
“Inside her backpack.”
My heart stopped.
The same backpack that had saved her drawings.
The same backpack that had exposed Vanessa.
The same backpack that had been carrying Claire's letters.
Michael whispered:
“Claire knew exactly where to hide the truth.”
I ran upstairs.
Lily was awake.
Her backpack was beside her bed.
I opened it.
Inside was a small envelope.
Written across the front:
FOR DANIEL — WHEN HE IS READY.
I opened it.
The first line made my blood run cold.
If you are reading this, my mother did not act alone.
And beneath it was a name.
A name I had never expected.
ROBERT CARTER.
My father.
The man who had spent years claiming he had protected us.
The man who had saved Claire.
The man who had supposedly sacrificed everything for his family.

The final secret was beginning to emerge.
And this time, the truth was going to destroy every person sitting at that table.
