Chapter 4 - THE WAREHOUSE WHERE CLAIRE DIED

The photograph remained on my phone.

I stared at it until my eyes began to hurt.

Claire.

My wife.

The woman I had buried three years earlier.

Standing beside my father.

Alive.

And behind them stood Rachel.

My wife had been terrified of someone.

My brother had admitted he was involved.

Richard Cole had prepared a custody petition designed to take my daughter away.

And now I was looking at a photograph that proved Rachel had known my father before Claire died.

I turned toward Rachel.

She was sitting on the living-room sofa under police supervision.

“Why are you in that photograph?”

She didn't answer.

“Rachel.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I didn't know what was going to happen.”

“What happened?”

“I can't tell you.”

“You can.”

Richard interrupted.

“Daniel, you should let the police handle this.”

I turned toward him.

“You've been handling it for three years.”

His expression hardened.

Officer Miller stepped forward.

“Mr. Cole, stop.”

Richard leaned back.

I looked at Michael.

He was staring at the floor.

“You were there too.”

Michael nodded.

“What happened at the warehouse?”

He closed his eyes.

“Claire found out.”

“Found out what?”

“That your father was alive.”

“I already know that.”

“She discovered the trust.”

“What trust?”

“The original Carter trust.”

I looked at the documents.

“What was inside it?”

Michael swallowed.

“Evidence.”

“Against whom?”

“Everyone.”

I waited.

He finally looked at me.

“Your father had been collecting evidence against the people who stole from the company.”

“Richard?”

“Yes.”

“Who else?”

Michael hesitated.

“Your grandfather.”

“My grandfather died twenty years ago.”

Michael shook his head.

“That's what everyone was told.”

I felt the room tilt.

“You're saying he's alive too?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“He died.”

“Then why mention him?”

“Because the people who worked for him never stopped.”

Richard suddenly stood.

“That is enough.”

Officer Miller immediately blocked him.

“Sit down.”

Richard's jaw tightened.

Michael continued.

“Claire found the old files.”

“What files?”

“Financial records. Transfers. Offshore accounts.”

“And she was going to expose them.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't she tell me?”

“Because she didn't know who she could trust.”

The answer cut deeply.

I thought about every night Claire had looked tired.

Every time she had asked me to keep Lily close.

Every time she had told me:

“Something doesn't feel right.”

I had always asked her what was wrong.

She had always said:

“Nothing.”

Now I understood.

She had been trying to protect me.

And I had mistaken her fear for stress.

“Take me to the warehouse.”

Officer Miller looked at me.

“It's been three years.”

“I don't care.”

“We'll go.”

Richard objected.

“You cannot take him there.”

Officer Miller turned.

“Why?”

Richard said nothing.

That silence told me everything.

The warehouse still existed.

We drove there before sunrise.

Lily stayed with a family-services officer at a safe location.

I hated leaving her.

But I knew I couldn't bring her into whatever was waiting for us.

The warehouse sat at the edge of an industrial district.

The building looked abandoned.

Broken windows.

Rusting doors.

We entered with police.

Inside, dust covered everything.

Michael walked several steps behind me.

“Where?”

He pointed toward the back.

“There.”

We found a small office.

The lock had been replaced.

Officer Miller cut it.

Inside was a desk.

A chair.

A broken computer.

And a dark stain on the floor.

I stared.

“Is this where Claire died?”

Michael nodded.

I couldn't breathe.

Three years disappeared.

I could almost hear her voice.

I could see her sitting there.

Waiting.

Afraid.

Officer Miller searched the room.

Then she found something behind the desk.

A hidden compartment.

Inside was a small recorder.

I picked it up.

There was one file.

I pressed play.

Claire's voice.

“Daniel, if you hear this, please don't come here.”

My eyes filled with tears.

“I know you're looking for answers.”

Her voice trembled.

“I found the documents.”

A man's voice interrupted.

My father's.

“Claire.”

She answered:

“Robert, you have to tell him.”

My father said:

“He isn't ready.”

“I don't care.”

“They will kill him.”

“They already killed me once.”

Silence.

Then another voice.

Richard.

“You shouldn't have come.”

Claire gasped.

The recording became chaotic.

A chair moved.

Someone shouted.

Then a loud crash.

Claire screamed:

“Daniel!”

The recording ended.

I stared at the device.

“That's all?”

Officer Miller shook her head.

“There may be more.”

She examined the recorder.

“There is a hidden storage partition.”

She connected it to a forensic laptop.

Another file appeared.

FINAL MEETING.

I pressed play.

Claire spoke first.

“You lied to Daniel.”

My father's voice:

“I was trying to protect him.”

Richard:

“You were trying to protect yourself.”

Then Michael spoke.

“Please stop.”

Claire shouted:

“You helped them!”

Michael:

“I didn't know they were going to kill you.”

The room went silent.

My hands shook.

Claire's voice softened.

“Daniel is your brother.”

Michael:

“I know.”

“Then why?”

“I was scared.”

Richard interrupted.

“You should have brought the documents.”

Claire laughed bitterly.

“You think this is about money?”

Richard:

“It always was.”

“No.”

Claire's voice became stronger.

“This is about Lily.”

I closed my eyes.

Richard said:

“She is a child.”

“She is the heir.”

“And when she becomes eighteen, everything changes.”

My heart stopped.

Claire continued.

“You cannot control her.”

Richard answered:

“We can control who raises her.”

The recording ended.

I looked at Michael.

“You knew.”

He nodded.

“I knew they wanted custody.”

“Did you know they would kill Claire?”

“No.”

“Did you know they would kill me?”

Michael looked at me.

“Yes.”

My blood ran cold.

“Who told you?”

He pointed at Richard.

Richard didn't move.

I stepped toward him.

“You threatened my brother.”

Richard looked at me.

“I gave him a choice.”

“What choice?”

“His family or yours.”

Michael started crying.

Richard continued:

“He chose his family.”

I looked at Michael.

“You chose them.”

“I was wrong.”

“You let my wife die.”

“I tried to stop it.”

“You failed.”

“Yes.”

I wanted to hit him.

But I didn't.

Instead, I asked:

“Where is my father?”

Michael looked toward the warehouse door.

“He's alive.”

“Where?”

“I don't know.”

Richard smiled.

But there was fear in his eyes.

Then Officer Miller's radio crackled.

She listened.

Her expression changed.

“What?”

She looked at me.

“We have a problem.”

“What?”

“Someone accessed your house.”

My heart stopped.

“Lily?”

“She is safe.”

“Then who?”

Officer Miller showed me her phone.

A security camera had captured a man entering the property.

The same man from the photograph.

My father.

He was alive.

May you like

And he had gone back to my house.

Alone.
