Chapter 6 - THE MAN WHO RAISED THE LIE

The darkness lasted only seconds.
Then emergency lights came on.
Red.
Dim.
Unnatural.
Officer Miller moved us toward the stairs.
“Everyone stay together.”
We reached the main floor.
The front door stood open.
A man was standing in the hallway.
Gray suit.
Silver hair.
Calm expression.
Richard Cole.
He smiled.
“Daniel.”
I stared.
“How did you get here?”
He didn't answer.
His eyes moved toward Sophie.
“There she is.”
I stepped in front of my daughter.
“You're not touching her.”
Richard sighed.
“You have no idea how much trouble you've caused.”
“You threatened my family.”
“I protected it.”
“You manipulated my wife.”
“She was unstable.”
Rachel shouted:
“You told me to take her!”
Richard looked at her.
“And you failed.”
Officer Miller raised her weapon.
“Step away from the child.”
Richard laughed softly.
“You think this is a criminal matter?”
“It is.”
“No.”
He pulled out a folder.
“This is a custody matter.”
He opened it.
A judge's temporary order.
It gave Rachel emergency custody.
I stared.
“This is fake.”
Richard smiled.
“Is it?”
Officer Miller took the document.
She examined it.
Then her expression changed.
“It has a legitimate court seal.”
My heart dropped.
Richard had already filed it.
He had planned everything.
Rachel looked horrified.
“I never agreed to this.”
“You signed the original petition.”
“I was forced.”
Richard shrugged.
“Doesn't matter.”
He looked at Sophie.
“She's coming with me.”
I grabbed my daughter.
“No.”
Richard nodded toward the police.
“If you interfere, you become the dangerous parent.”
He had prepared for everything.
But then Margaret stepped forward.
“Richard.”
He froze.
She held up the evidence.
“You're finished.”
Richard's expression changed.
“Margaret.”
“I have your records.”
“You don't understand.”
“I understand exactly.”
She lifted the documents.
“You stole from Daniel's father.”
Richard stepped forward.
Officer Miller blocked him.
Margaret continued.
“You forged documents.”
Richard said nothing.
“You staged a death.”
Still nothing.
“You threatened Rachel.”
His eyes hardened.
Then he looked at me.
“Your father caused this.”
“What?”
“He created the trust.”
“He created the trust to protect Sophie.”
“No.”
Richard laughed.
“He created it to control you.”
I stared.
“You're lying.”
Richard opened another folder.
Inside was a letter from my father.
It appeared to show that he had planned to manipulate me into signing away my rights.
I looked at the signature.
It was real.
My stomach dropped.
“Is this true?”
Margaret shook her head.
“It's incomplete.”
Richard smiled.
“She doesn't know.”
Margaret grabbed the document.
“Turn the page.”
I did.
The second page was missing.
Richard had removed it.
Margaret took another document from the cabinet.
“The original.”
She placed it beside the forged copy.
The final paragraph was completely different.
My father had not planned to take control.
He had planned to give me control.
Richard's forgery was exposed.
Officer Miller immediately arrested him.
Richard didn't resist.
As officers handcuffed him, he looked at Sophie.
“You'll never know what your father did.”
I said:
“She doesn't need to.”
Richard smiled.
“Ask him where he was the night your mother died.”
Then he was taken away.
I turned toward Margaret.
“What does he mean?”
She looked at me.
“I think you need to hear the truth.”
“What truth?”
“Your mother didn't die in an accident.”
The room went silent.
My mother had died when I was three.
I had been told it was a car accident.
Margaret shook her head.
“She was killed.”
I couldn't breathe.
“Who killed her?”
May you like
Margaret looked toward the basement.
“Your father knows.”
