Chapter 7 - WHAT REALLY HAPPENED TO MY MOTHER

My father called that night.
The number was blocked.
I answered.
“Dad?”
Silence.
Then his voice.
“I heard.”
“You're alive.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't you come home?”
“Because I was protecting you.”
“You let me believe you were dead.”
“I had no choice.”
“You had every choice.”
He sighed.
“I know.”
I asked him about my mother.
There was a long silence.
Then he said:
“She was murdered.”
My knees weakened.
“Who?”
“I don't know.”
“You know.”
“I know who ordered it.”
“Who?”
“Your grandfather.”
I froze.
“My grandfather died twenty years ago.”
“No.”
“What?”
“He disappeared.”
My father told me the truth.
My grandfather had built the family company through illegal partnerships.
My mother discovered the fraud.
She threatened to expose him.
He ordered her death.
My father tried to stop it.
He failed.
Afterward, he created the trust.
He wanted to protect me.
Then Sophie was born.
He changed the trust again.
He made Sophie the controlling heir.
Because he believed the family would eventually come after us.
I asked:
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because you were young.”
“I have spent my entire life believing my mother died accidentally.”
“I know.”
My voice broke.
“Did you love her?”
“Yes.”
“Then why did you let me forget her?”
“I never did.”
He explained that every year he visited her grave.
Every year he watched me from a distance.
He had never abandoned me.
He had been afraid that if he returned, the people hunting him would find me.
I asked where he was.
“Safe.”
“Where?”
“I can't tell you.”
“Dad.”
“I'll come home when it's safe.”
I looked at Sophie.
“It's not safe.”
“No.”
“Then come back.”
He was silent.
Finally:
“I will.”
The call ended.
Then Margaret walked into the room.
She was holding another envelope.
“Your father asked me to give you this.”
Inside was a photograph.
My mother.
Me.
And another child.
I stared.
“Who is that?”
Margaret whispered:
“Your mother's first daughter.”
I froze.
“My mother had another child?”
“Yes.”
“Where is she?”
“Missing.”
“What was her name?”
“Claire.”
My heart pounded.
Another sibling.
Another secret.
Margaret explained that my mother had given birth to Claire before meeting my father.
Claire disappeared when she was four.
Everyone believed she had been adopted.
But my grandfather had taken her.
Why?
Because Claire had inherited something.
A piece of the family trust.
My father had spent decades trying to find her.
Richard had known.
Rachel had known.
Vanessa, my father's former partner, had known.
And now I knew.
The conspiracy wasn't just about Sophie.
It was about the entire family.
Then my daughter walked into the room.
“Daddy?”
I turned.
“What is it?”
She held a small photograph.
“Grandma.”
I looked at it.
It was my mother.
But behind her stood a little girl.
Claire.
On the back was a date.
And an address.
I called my father.
No answer.
I called Margaret.
She stared at the address.
“That's impossible.”
“Why?”
“Because that building burned down twenty-five years ago.”
I looked at the photograph again.
Then I noticed something.
A small sign above the door.
St. Mary's Children's Home.
Margaret whispered:
“That wasn't an orphanage.”
“What was it?”
“A holding facility.”
“For whom?”
“Children connected to the trust.”
I looked at Sophie.
She was holding my hand.
I suddenly understood.
My family had been hiding children for generations.
And the people who controlled the money controlled their identities.

We needed to find Claire.
Before they found her first.
