Chapter 8 - THE GIRL WHO NEVER LEFT

The old children's home stood outside the city.
The building had been abandoned for decades.
But someone had recently entered.
There were fresh footprints.
Fresh food.
A working generator.
We searched every room.
Then Sophie heard something.
“Daddy.”
“What?”
“Someone is singing.”
I followed her.
Behind a locked door was a small room.
Inside were photographs.
Children.
Names.
Dates.
And one photograph that made my heart stop.
Claire.
She was older now.
A teenager in the picture.
Beside her was my father.
The photograph had been taken five years ago.
That meant my father had found her.
He had been here.
I searched the room.
Then I found a notebook.
Claire had written in it.
She had been moved repeatedly.
She knew about the trust.
She knew about Sophie.
She knew about me.
The final page said:
If Daniel ever finds this, tell him I never blamed him.
Then:
Richard knows where I am.
I heard a sound behind me.
A door closing.
I turned.
Nobody.
Then my phone rang.
My father.
“Get out.”
“Dad, I found Claire.”
“I know.”
“Where is she?”
“Not there.”
“What?”
“She left yesterday.”
“Where?”
“I don't know.”
“Who has her?”
Silence.
Then:
“Your grandfather.”
I froze.
“He's alive?”
“Yes.”
“He has Claire?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Claire knows the location of the original trust.”
“Where?”
My father didn't answer.
“Dad!”
“The location is inside Sophie's birth records.”
I looked at my daughter.
“What does that mean?”
“Your mother hid the original trust code inside the hospital records.”
Rachel walked into the room.
“I know where those records are.”
Everyone looked at her.
“The hospital?”
Rachel nodded.
“Your father had access to them.”
“Why?”
“To hide the code.”
My father said:
“Go there.”
We left immediately.
The hospital archives were underground.
The records had been sealed.
Rachel knew the access code.
Inside was Sophie's birth file.
The final page had a handwritten symbol.
A circle.
Five lines.
A number.
My father had once told me that my family used symbols instead of signatures.
I recognized it.
It was the symbol on the old company building.
We returned to the headquarters.
The symbol opened a hidden elevator.
It descended beneath the building.
There was a vault.
Inside was the original trust.
And a video.
My father appeared on screen.
“If you found this, the family has finally discovered the truth.”
He explained that the trust wasn't money.
It was ownership of a private foundation.
The foundation held evidence against powerful people.
The money was only a cover.
The real inheritance was the evidence.
My grandfather had spent decades trying to destroy it.
My father had protected it.
My mother had protected it.
Now Sophie had inherited it.
I stared at the screen.
Then the video continued.
“The final file is not here.”
I frowned.
“Where is it?”
My father looked directly at the camera.
“Inside the person you trust least.”
The video ended.
Everyone looked at Rachel.
She whispered:
“No.”
Then the vault door opened.
A man stood outside.
My father.
Alive.
He looked at me.
Then at Sophie.
May you like
And he said:
“We're out of time.”
