Chapter 9 - MY FATHER CAME HOME

I couldn't move.

My father stood in front of me.

Older.

Thinner.

But alive.

I walked toward him.

“You're real.”

He smiled.

“Yes.”

I hit him.

Once.

Not hard.

Just enough to let him know how much pain his disappearance had caused.

Then I hugged him.

He held me tightly.

“I am sorry.”

“You should be.”

“I know.”

Sophie watched us.

My father knelt.

“Hello, sweetheart.”

She stared.

“Are you Grandpa?”

“Yes.”

“You were dead.”

He smiled sadly.

“Not quite.”

She hugged him.

My father closed his eyes.

For the first time in years, he cried.

Then he looked at Rachel.

His expression changed.

“You were supposed to protect her.”

“I know.”

“You failed.”

“I know.”

“But you changed.”

Rachel nodded.

“I love Sophie.”

My father looked at me.

“She does.”

I didn't forgive Rachel.

Not yet.

But I understood.

Then Dad opened the vault.

Inside was the final file.

It contained evidence against my grandfather.

Bank accounts.

Bribes.

Illegal transfers.

Witness statements.

And a recording.

My grandfather admitting everything.

But there was another name.

Margaret.

Dad looked at her.

She lowered her eyes.

“I was working undercover.”

My father nodded.

“She helped me.”

The pieces finally connected.

Margaret had been protecting the family.

Rachel had been manipulated.

Richard had been stealing.

My grandfather had been controlling everyone.

But someone else remained.

Claire.

We found her location through the final file.

A private estate outside Chicago.

We went there with police.

Claire was inside.

Alive.

She looked at me.

“You're my brother.”

I nodded.

She smiled.

“I always wanted to meet you.”

I hugged her.

Then she whispered:

“There's something you need to know.”

“What?”

“Grandfather isn't the mastermind.”

My father froze.

“What?”

Claire handed him a document.

The name at the top wasn't my grandfather.

It was someone else.

A woman.

My grandmother.

Dad stared.

“She died twenty years ago.”

Claire shook her head.

“No.”

“She is alive.”

Everyone went silent.

The woman who had supposedly died before I was born had been controlling the trust from the beginning.

Claire continued:

“She built the entire system.”

“Why?”

“To protect the family.”

Dad looked devastated.

“She let all of this happen?”

“She believed suffering would reveal who could be trusted.”

I looked at Rachel.

Then at my father.

Then at Sophie.

The truth was becoming unbearable.

But Claire wasn't finished.

“She left one final instruction.”

“What?”

Claire looked at Sophie.

“When the youngest heir turns six, the family must gather.”

My daughter was five.

May you like

That meant we had less than a year.

And someone was already trying to stop us.
