Chapter 10 - THE WOMAN BEHIND EVERYTHING

My grandmother's name was Eleanor Carter.

Everyone believed she died twenty years earlier.

She didn't.

She had been living under another identity.

Watching.

Waiting.

Protecting the family from a distance.

When we found her, she was living in a small coastal town.

She opened the door herself.

She looked older.

But her eyes were sharp.

She looked at me.

Then at Sophie.

“You found her.”

I stared.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“You knew what Rachel did?”

“Yes.”

My anger returned.

“You watched my daughter suffer.”

Eleanor's face fell.

“I failed to stop it.”

“You did.”

“I know.”

She explained everything.

The family trust had been created to protect children from people who wanted control.

Every generation had produced someone who tried to steal it.

My grandfather.

Richard.

Others.

The system required the family to discover the truth themselves.

But Eleanor admitted she had underestimated how far people would go.

“I thought I could control the game.”

“You couldn't.”

“No.”

She looked at Sophie.

“I was wrong.”

Then she handed me the final document.

The trust wasn't just Sophie’s.

It belonged to all surviving descendants.

My daughter.

Claire.

Me.

And my father.

But there was one condition.

No one could inherit alone.

The family had to remain united.

That was why everyone had been separated.

My grandfather had broken the family apart.

Richard had exploited it.

Rachel had been used as a weapon.

Now we had a chance to end it.

But the final evidence was still missing.

Eleanor told us there was one person who had it.

“Who?”

“Your mother.”

I stared.

“My mother is dead.”

“No.”

I couldn't breathe.

“She survived the attack.”

“Where is she?”

Eleanor smiled sadly.

“Closer than you think.”

A door opened behind her.

A woman stepped into the room.

I knew her face immediately.

Even after twenty years.

My mother's eyes.

Her smile.

Her voice.

She whispered:

“Daniel.”

My father collapsed into a chair.

I couldn't speak.

My mother walked toward me.

Then she knelt beside Sophie.

“Hello, sweetheart.”

Sophie stared.

“Who are you?”

My mother smiled through tears.

“I am your grandmother.”

I began crying.

Everything I believed about my life had been a lie.

But this time, the lie had finally ended.

My mother explained that she had survived.

She had gone into hiding to protect us.

She had been waiting for the right moment.

Now the family was together.

But then she looked at me.

“There is one final problem.”

“What?”

“Richard wasn't working alone.”

My father looked at her.

“Who else?”

She whispered:

“Rachel's mother.”

Rachel froze.

“My mother died.”

“No.”

My mother shook her head.

“She changed her identity.”

Rachel looked horrified.

“Where is she?”

My mother looked toward the window.

“She is already here.”

A car stopped outside.

An elderly woman stepped out.

Rachel stared through the glass.

“Mom?”

May you like

The woman looked up.

And smiled.
