Chapter 11: The Doctor Who Changed Everything

The hospital looked almost exactly as I remembered it.

The same glass entrance.

The same polished floors.

The same faint smell of disinfectant mixed with coffee from the reception area.

I had spent countless nights here while Emily underwent treatment.

I remembered sleeping in uncomfortable chairs.

I remembered bringing Lily to visit her mother.

I remembered Emily asking me to promise that I would never let our daughter forget how much she was loved.

Now I was returning because someone might have deliberately altered her medication.

Rachel walked beside me.

Michael followed.

Vanessa remained several steps behind.

“Where is Olivia?”” I asked.

Rachel pointed toward the administrative corridor.

“Records archive. Second floor.””

We found her sitting on a bench outside a locked office.

She stood when she saw us.

She looked older than I remembered, with tired eyes and a small scar near her hairline.

“Marcus.””

I approached her.

“Tell me everything.””

Olivia glanced at Vanessa.

“I don't want her here.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“You're being ridiculous.””

Olivia stepped backward.

“You told me Emily was receiving the correct medication.””

“I believed that.””

“You knew what Dr. Pierce was doing!””

Vanessa's face hardened.

“Keep your voice down.””

I stepped between them.

“Enough. Olivia, start from the beginning.””

She took a shaky breath.

“Emily was receiving treatment for cancer. Her condition was serious, but she was still mentally alert. She remembered everything. She kept asking why certain medications made her feel worse.””

“What did the doctor say?””

“That her body was rejecting treatment.””

Rachel frowned.

“Did you see the medication labels?””

Olivia nodded.

“I did. One bottle was different from the one Emily had been prescribed.””

Michael stepped forward.

“Did you keep it?””

“No. Dr. Pierce collected all the bottles after every medication round.””

I looked at her.

“Why didn't Emily tell me?””

“She tried.””

My chest tightened.

“What?””

Olivia lowered her eyes.

“She told you something was wrong, didn't she?””

I remembered one particular evening.

Emily had held my hand and whispered that she didn't trust the new doctor.

I'd told her she was frightened because the treatment was difficult.

I had promised to speak to the medical team.

The next morning, she apologized for worrying me.

I had believed her.

Now I felt sick.

Olivia continued.

“She asked me to keep a record. So I wrote down the names, doses, and times. But the records disappeared after Dr. Pierce visited.””

Rachel opened her briefcase.

“Do you still have copies?””

Olivia nodded.

“I kept one.””

She reached inside her bag and removed a small notebook.

The pages were filled with dates, medication names, and handwritten observations.

I took it.

On October 14, one entry stood out.

*Medication administered: 8:15 p.m.*

*Bottle label did not match prescription.*

*Patient complained of dizziness and confusion.*

Beneath it was another note.

*Dr. Pierce instructed staff not to inform family.*

I looked at Rachel.

“Can this prove something?””

“It can establish a reason for an independent medical review,” she said.

“But we need the original prescription and hospital administration records.””

Olivia pointed toward the locked office.

“They're inside.””

Rachel approached the door.

“Who has access?””

“Dr. Pierce and the hospital records supervisor.””

Michael looked at his watch.

“Can we get in?””

Before anyone answered, a familiar voice came from behind us.

“I'm afraid that's not possible.””

We turned.

A tall man in a gray suit stood at the end of the corridor.

His hair was silver, and he wore thin glasses.

I recognized him immediately.

Dr. Harold Pierce.

He smiled as if we had arranged a friendly meeting.

“Marcus. It's been a long time.””

I stepped forward.

“Why did you change my wife's medication?””

His smile disappeared.

“I beg your pardon?””

“Olivia says you replaced her prescribed medication.””

He looked at her.

“Olivia has a history of emotional instability.””

Olivia's face reddened.

“You told me Emily was receiving the right treatment!””

“Please don't make a scene.””

Rachel stepped forward.

“Dr. Pierce, I'm Rachel Morgan. I'm representing the estate of Emily Bennett. We require access to her original medical records.””

He shook his head.

“Patient records are confidential.””

“Emily authorized their release before her death.””

“Then provide the authorization.””

Rachel handed him a document.

He read it.

His expression changed slightly.

Then he handed it back.

“This is insufficient.””

Michael took a step forward.

“Funny. You didn't seem concerned about confidentiality when you were discussing my father's financial arrangements.””

The doctor looked at him.

For the first time, his composure cracked.

“Who are you?””

“Someone who knows about the payments.””

Dr. Pierce's eyes moved toward Vanessa.

Then he smiled again.

“You're all making serious allegations without evidence.””

I moved closer.

“Then give us the records.””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because your wife was a terminally ill patient. Her treatment was supervised by qualified professionals.””

“Was it?””

He looked directly at me.

“Mr. Bennett, grief can make people believe terrible things.””

I clenched my fists.

Rachel touched my arm.

“Marcus. Don't.””

The doctor turned to leave.

Then Olivia spoke.

“I still have the original bottle.””

He stopped.

Slowly, he turned around.

“What?””

Olivia reached into her bag and removed a small plastic container.

Inside was an empty medication bottle.

The label had Emily's name.

Dr. Pierce stared at it.

Olivia continued.

“I took it home the night you told me to throw it away. I kept it because Emily asked me to.””

The doctor took one step toward her.

“Give me that.””

“No.””

“You have no idea what you're holding.””

“I know exactly what I'm holding.””

Rachel immediately photographed the bottle.

Then she called hospital security.

Dr. Pierce's expression changed.

“You cannot do this.””

“I believe we just did,” Rachel replied.

Two security officers arrived.

The doctor attempted to walk away, but one officer asked him to remain until the hospital administrator arrived.

He looked at me.

“You have no idea what you're getting involved in.””

I stepped closer.

“Then explain it.””

He leaned toward me and whispered:

“Your wife was never the target.””

I froze.

“What?””

He smiled faintly.

“Your father wanted someone else silenced. Emily simply got in the way.””

Before I could respond, hospital security escorted him into an administrative office.

Rachel immediately began arranging for the records to be preserved.

Olivia sat down, trembling.

I knelt beside her.

“Who was your father trying to silence?””

She looked at me.

Then she reached into her handbag and removed another photograph.

It showed our father standing outside the hospital.

Beside him was a woman I had never seen before.

On the back was a name.

*Caroline Bennett.*

I looked at Michael.

He went pale.

“That can't be my mother.””

Olivia shook her head.

“It is.””

Michael took the photograph.

His fingers trembled.

“But my mother died years ago.””

Olivia looked directly at him.

“That's what they told you.””

I stared at her.

“Are you saying Caroline is alive?””

Olivia nodded.

“She came to see Emily two days before she died.””

Rachel stood motionless.

May you like

Then Olivia added:

“And she left something in the hospital chapel.””
