Chapter 6: The Letter Emily Left for Lily

I took the letter from Lily's small hands.
For a moment, I couldn't bring myself to open it.
Emily's handwriting was unmistakable.
The same rounded letters she'd used on birthday cards, grocery lists, and the little notes she'd left beside my coffee cup.
I remembered the last morning she had been home.
She'd sat at the kitchen table, wrapped in a blanket, writing something while Lily colored beside her.
When I asked what she was doing, she'd smiled.
“Just making sure our little girl knows she's loved.””
I had assumed it was another birthday letter.
Now I wondered whether she'd been preparing for this exact moment.
“Daddy?”” Lily whispered.
I looked at her.
“Is Mommy talking to me?””
I swallowed.
“Yes, sweetheart. I think she is.””
Lily climbed onto the sofa.
“Can you read it?””
I nodded.
Vanessa stood in the doorway.
Daniel remained outside.
I could feel both of them watching me.
I unfolded the paper.
My darling Lily,
If you are reading this, then something happened to your little blue doll. I hope it was an accident. I hope nobody was cruel to you.
But if someone deliberately hurt the doll, I need you to remember something.
You are loved.
You were loved before you were born, and you will be loved for the rest of your life.
No one has the right to make you feel that your memories are wrong.
I paused.
Lily leaned closer.
“Keep reading, Daddy.””
I continued.
There are things grown-ups sometimes hide because they are afraid of losing what they have. Your grandfather was one of those people.
He told your father that he wanted to protect our family. But he was actually trying to take something that belonged to you.
I kept the proof somewhere safe.
You don't need to understand everything today. You only need to know that your father must protect you from anyone who asks you to give up your memories, your home, or your name.
And if you ever meet the man in the photograph inside the doll, ask him what happened on the night your father was born.
I stopped.
My father.
The night I was born?
I looked at Daniel through the open doorway.
He had gone completely still.
“What happened on the night I was born?”” I asked.
Daniel lowered his eyes.
Vanessa suddenly spoke.
“That's enough.””
I turned.
“What?””
“You shouldn't read any more.””
I stared at her.
“Why?””
“Because Emily was confused.””
“Stop saying that!””
My voice startled Lily.
She flinched.
I immediately softened my tone.
“I'm sorry, sweetheart.””
I kissed her forehead.
Then I turned back toward Vanessa.
“You've been telling me Emily was confused every time her words became inconvenient. I'm done listening to that.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“You don't understand what she was trying to do.””
“Then explain it.””
“She wanted to make sure you never trusted me.””
“Did she have a reason?””
Vanessa looked toward Daniel.
He shook his head.
“Don't involve Lily in this,” he said.
Vanessa laughed.
“You don't get to pretend you're protecting her. You're the reason this family fell apart.””
Daniel stepped inside.
“And you're the reason Emily spent her final months afraid.””
Lily looked between them.
“Please don't fight.””
The three of us fell silent.
I carried her upstairs and tucked her into bed.
She insisted on keeping the damaged doll beside her.
“Will Mommy be angry that her dress burned?”” she asked.
My throat tightened.
“No, sweetheart.””
“Will you fix it?””
“I promise I'll find someone who can.””
She studied my face.
“Daddy?””
“Yes?””
“Did Mommy know Vanessa was mean?””
I sat on the edge of the bed.
“Mommy knew some people weren't telling the truth.””
“Did she know Vanessa would burn my doll?””
I couldn't answer immediately.
Then I said, “I don't think she wanted you to experience that.””
Lily looked down at the doll.
“I wish Mommy was here.””
I brushed her hair away from her forehead.
“So do I.””
When she finally fell asleep, I returned downstairs.
Daniel was standing beside the fireplace.
Vanessa sat on the sofa with her arms folded.
I placed Emily's letter on the coffee table.
“Now we're going to talk.””
Daniel nodded.
Vanessa looked away.
I pointed toward the photograph.
“What happened on the night I was born?””
Daniel took a long breath.
“Your father wasn't at the hospital.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He was in another city. He was having a business meeting. Mom called him several times, but he didn't answer.””
I remembered our mother rarely speaking about the day I was born.
She always said it had been complicated.
Daniel continued.
“Mom gave birth to you alone. When Dad finally arrived, he was angry because she had named you Marcus without consulting him.””
I frowned.
“That's ridiculous.””
“He wanted you named after his father. Mom refused.””
I stared at him.
“What does that have to do with Lily?””
Daniel looked toward the letter.
“Because our father spent the rest of his life believing he had the right to decide who belonged to this family.””
Vanessa interrupted.
“Daniel, that's not the whole story.””
He turned toward her.
“Then tell it.””
She hesitated.
I noticed her right hand trembling.
“Your father told me that Emily wasn't the first woman he had tried to control.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“He had another child.””
Silence filled the room.
I stared at her.
“Our father had another child?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Vanessa looked at Daniel.
Then she looked at me.
“He was the man Emily photographed outside the bank.””
Daniel's jaw tightened.
I picked up the photograph again.
The man holding the baby carrier.
The man standing beside Emily.
The man who had been identified in the DNA report as Lily's biological father.
I looked at Daniel.
“You told me you were Lily's father.””
“I am.””
“Then who is that man?””
Daniel hesitated.
“His name is Michael.””
I felt a cold wave move through me.
“Michael what?””
“Michael Bennett.””
I stared at him.
The same surname.
The same family.
The same face as our father.
Daniel continued quietly.
“He was born before Dad married our mother. Dad paid his mother to keep him away from us. But Emily found him.””
I sank onto the sofa.
“How did Emily know?””
“She was investigating the family business. She discovered payments made to a woman named Caroline for almost thirty years.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“And you knew?””
Vanessa nodded slowly.
“Your father told me everything.””
“Why?””
“Because he wanted me to find Michael.””
I felt my stomach turn.
“Why would he want that?””
Vanessa looked down.
“Because Michael had a legal claim to part of the family estate.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“And Dad was afraid he'd come back and expose everything.””
I looked at the damaged doll on the coffee table.
“Then what was Emily hiding?””
Daniel reached into his jacket and removed a small photograph.
It showed Emily holding a baby.
But this time, the baby wasn't Lily.
It was a newborn boy.
On the back, Emily had written:
*MICHAEL'S SON — THE REAL HEIR.*
I looked up.
“There's another child?””
Daniel nodded.
“Michael had a son. And according to Emily, that boy is the person our father spent years trying to erase.””
Vanessa stood abruptly.
“That's impossible.””
I stared at her.
“Why?””
She took a step backward.
“Because that child died.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
He looked directly at me.
“He didn't.””
Then my phone vibrated.
A message appeared from an unknown number.
*Marcus, my name is Michael Bennett. Emily asked me to contact you if the doll was ever destroyed.*
A second message followed.
*I know what happened to your father. And I can prove who ordered the payments to Vanessa.*
I looked toward the front window.
A car had stopped outside.
Someone stepped out.
The man from the photograph.
Michael.
But he wasn't alone.
He was holding the hand of a little boy.
And the boy was carrying a second handmade doll.
May you like
This one had a blue dress.
Just like Lily's.
