Chapter 7: The Boy at My Door

The little boy standing beside Michael looked about five years old.

He had dark brown hair, a small scar beneath his chin, and the same blue eyes I had seen in our father's old photographs.

But what caught my attention wasn't his face.

It was the doll in his hands.

A handmade cloth doll.

Brown yarn hair.

Button eyes.

A faded blue dress.

Almost identical to Lily's.

I opened the front door.

Michael stood on the porch, one hand resting protectively on the boy's shoulder.

“Marcus Bennett?”” he asked.

“Who are you?””

He gave a tired smile.

“You already know my name.””

I looked at the child.

“Who's this?””

Michael crouched beside him.

“This is Noah. My son.””

The boy lifted the doll.

“Daddy said this lady made it.””

My heart skipped.

“Who?””

“Emily.””

I stared at Michael.

“Come inside.””

He glanced past me.

His eyes landed on Daniel.

For several seconds, the two men looked at each other without speaking.

Then Michael said, “You must be Daniel.””

Daniel nodded.

“You look like our father.””

Michael's expression hardened.

“That's unfortunate.””

Vanessa suddenly stood.

“You shouldn't be here.””

Michael turned toward her.

“Hello, Vanessa.””

She folded her arms.

“I told you never to contact this family.””

Michael laughed quietly.

“You told me many things. Most of them were lies.””

I stepped aside.

“Everybody sits down. Now.””

Michael and Noah entered.

The boy immediately noticed Lily's doll on the coffee table.

“That's her!”” he exclaimed.

I looked at him.

“Who?””

“Miss Emily's doll. Daddy said she made one for my mommy too.””

Michael gently touched his son's shoulder.

“Not exactly, buddy.””

He looked at me.

“Emily made that doll for Lily. She made this one for Noah's mother.””

I frowned.

“Who was Noah's mother?””

Michael's expression changed.

“Caroline.””

The name from the bank records.

The woman our father had paid for decades.

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Was she our father's girlfriend?””

Michael shook his head.

“She was his first wife.””

Silence.

Daniel slowly sat down.

“Our father was married before?””

Michael nodded.

“He married Caroline when he was twenty-two. They had a son. Me.””

I stared at him.

“Why didn't we know?””

“Because your father made sure you didn't.””

Michael placed a folder on the coffee table.

“My mother discovered that he had been using her signature to transfer company assets. When she threatened to expose him, he accused her of stealing money.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“That sounds familiar.””

Michael nodded.

“He forced her to sign a settlement. Then he paid her to disappear.””

I opened the folder.

Inside were old photographs, legal papers, and bank statements.

One document showed our father's signature.

Another contained a payment to Caroline.

The amount was $250,000.

The date was the same month Daniel disappeared.

I looked at him.

“You knew?””

Daniel nodded.

“I discovered the payments when I was working at the company. Dad told me they were business expenses.””

“And you confronted him?””

“Yes.””

Michael answered instead.

“He threatened to destroy Daniel's career. Then he offered him money to leave town.””

Daniel stared at the floor.

“I refused at first.””

“What changed?””

Daniel looked at me.

“He showed me photographs of Emily.””

My chest tightened.

“What photographs?””

Daniel pulled a folded paper from his jacket.

It showed Emily leaving a doctor's office.

She was holding a folder.

On the back was a handwritten message.

If Daniel stays, Marcus will discover everything before Emily is ready.

I stared at the sentence.

“Dad used Emily to make you leave?””

Daniel nodded.

“He told me she was sick, that she wanted a peaceful life with you, and that my presence would destroy her marriage.””

“You believed him?””

“I was twenty-six and stupid. I thought leaving would protect her.””

I stood.

“You let me believe you stole from us!””

Daniel lowered his head.

“I know.””

“You let me hate you!””

“I know, Marcus.””

I walked toward the window.

For nine years, I had believed my brother had abandoned me.

Now I was learning that our father had manipulated both of us.

But that didn't erase what Daniel had done.

It didn't erase the betrayal.

Michael opened another folder.

“There's something else you need to understand.””

I turned.

He placed a photograph on the table.

It showed our father sitting in a hospital room beside Emily.

But the date was different.

This photograph had been taken two days after Vanessa's visit.

I recognized the hospital bed.

I recognized Emily's face.

And I recognized the man standing beside her.

Our father.

I picked up the photograph.

“Why was he there?””

Michael looked at Vanessa.

“Ask her.””

Vanessa's eyes filled.

“I didn't know what he planned to do.””

“What did he plan?”” I demanded.

She looked at Michael.

“He wanted Emily to sign a document.””

“What document?””

“A release.””

“For what?””

Vanessa hesitated.

Then Daniel spoke.

“The transfer of Lily's inheritance.””

I stared at her.

“You were helping him steal from a dying woman?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I thought the money would be used for Lily's future.””

Michael opened a final envelope.

“Then perhaps you'd like to explain these.””

He placed several printed emails on the table.

They were between Vanessa and our father.

One message caught my attention.

Once Emily signs, Marcus will never know what happened to the original trust. Vanessa, make sure the child is attached to you before the transfer is finalized.

I read it twice.

Then I looked at Vanessa.

“What does that mean?””

She began crying.

Michael answered.

“It means your father wanted Vanessa to become Lily's legal guardian before the inheritance could be moved.””

My blood ran cold.

“You were planning to take my daughter?””

Vanessa shook her head violently.

“No! I never wanted to take Lily away from you!””

“Then why did you sign those papers?””

“I was promised money. I was told it was for Lily.””

Michael leaned forward.

“That's not what the documents say.””

He pulled out a final page.

It contained a clause transferring control of the trust to a private company.

The company's director was Vanessa.

I looked at her.

“You were going to control everything.””

She covered her face.

“I didn't know how much money was involved.””

Michael's voice was cold.

“You knew enough to sign.””

Noah tugged at his father's sleeve.

“Daddy?””

Michael looked down.

“What's wrong?””

“Can I give Lily her present?””

Everyone fell silent.

Michael nodded.

Noah walked toward the stairs, holding his doll.

“Mommy said I should give this to the little girl if I ever met her.””

I knelt.

“Who is your mommy?””

Noah looked at me.

Then he said something none of us expected.

“Emily.””

May you like

Michael closed his eyes.

And I realized the truth was about to become much bigger than any of us had imagined.
