Chapter 5: The Man Outside My House

I drove home faster than I should have.

The entire journey, I kept hearing Emily's voice.

Daniel is Lily's biological father.

I had so many questions that my mind couldn't organize them.

Had Emily loved Daniel?

Had she married me knowing the truth?

Had my brother deliberately destroyed my marriage?

And why had someone paid him to disappear?

But one question mattered more than all the others.

Was Lily in danger?

When I turned into our driveway, I immediately noticed a black sedan parked across the street.

Its headlights were off.

Someone was sitting behind the steering wheel.

I slowed down.

The driver raised one hand.

Then the door opened.

A man stepped out.

He was older than I remembered, with a little gray in his dark hair and a scar running from his left eyebrow toward his temple.

But I recognized him immediately.

Daniel.

My brother.

He stood on the sidewalk as if he'd been waiting for me his entire life.

I parked and got out.

Neither of us spoke.

Then Daniel said, “You look terrible.””

I stared at him.

“You've got some nerve.””

He glanced toward the house.

“Is Lily inside?””

“Don't say her name.””

“Marcus, please.””

“Where have you been?””

Daniel looked down.

“That's a long story.””

“You've had nine years to tell it.””

He swallowed.

“I know.””

I walked closer.

“Did you sleep with my wife?””

His face changed.

He didn't ask which wife.

He didn't pretend not to understand.

Instead, he closed his eyes.

“Emily deserved better than what happened.””

My fist tightened.

“Answer me!””

“Yes.””

The word landed between us.

I felt something break inside my chest.

Daniel continued.

“I was in love with her before you ever knew she existed.””

“You were my brother.””

“I know.””

“She was my wife!””

“I know, Marcus.””

I grabbed the front of his jacket.

“Then why?””

He didn't resist.

“Because I was selfish. Because I thought I could have both of you. Because I made a mistake that ruined three lives.””

I shoved him away.

“You don't get to call this a mistake.””

Daniel stumbled backward.

“No. You're right.””

He looked toward the house again.

“Where is Lily?””

I stepped between him and the front gate.

“She doesn't know you.””

“I know.””

“And she doesn't need you.””

Daniel's eyes filled.

“I know that too.””

Before I could answer, the front door opened.

Vanessa stepped onto the porch.

She had arrived home before me somehow.

When she saw Daniel, she froze.

“You came,” she whispered.

Daniel looked at her.

“You said you had everything under control.””

“I did.””

“You burned the doll?””

Vanessa glanced at me.

“Not here.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Of course. Never here. Never where Marcus can hear the truth.””

I turned toward him.

“What does she mean?””

Daniel rubbed his face.

“Emily put something inside that doll, didn't she?””

I didn't answer.

He looked at me.

“Then we need to get it back.””

“Why?””

“Because it contains the original evidence.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Daniel, stop.””

He ignored her.

“Emily recorded everything. The payments, the threats, the conversations. She knew someone was using her illness to take control of Lily's future.””

I stared at him.

“Who?””

Daniel looked toward the upstairs windows.

“Your father.””

For a moment, I forgot to breathe.

“Our father is dead.””

“I know.””

“He died six years ago.””

Daniel nodded.

“But before he died, he arranged everything.””

I shook my head.

“That makes no sense.””

Daniel took a folded photograph from his jacket.

It showed our father standing outside a hospital.

Beside him was a younger Vanessa.

The date printed on the back was October 14.

The same day Emily had visited.

The same day Vanessa had signed the hospital register.

I looked at her.

“Why were you with my father?””

Vanessa's voice trembled.

“He was helping me.””

“Helping you do what?””

Daniel answered for her.

“Get control of Emily's trust.””

Vanessa spun toward him.

“Shut up!””

Daniel didn't stop.

“Your father believed Marcus was too weak to run the family business. He thought Emily's illness would eventually leave Lily vulnerable. So he arranged for me to disappear and convinced everyone I had stolen money.””

I stared at him.

“Why would Dad do that?””

“Because I refused to sign over my share of the company.””

Daniel pulled another paper from his jacket.

It was a copy of a bank transfer.

The amount was $250,000.

The recipient was Daniel Bennett.

The sender was a company owned by Vanessa.

I looked at her.

“You paid him?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I was following instructions.””

“Whose instructions?””

She said nothing.

Daniel looked exhausted.

“Your father wanted me out of the picture. He wanted you to inherit everything. But he also wanted Lily's trust under his control.””

“Why would he care about Lily's inheritance?””

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Because Emily had discovered what he was doing with the family business.””

I looked down at the photograph.

The pieces were beginning to connect.

The money transfers.

The trust documents.

The secret hospital visits.

But one thing still didn't make sense.

“Why did you come back now?””

Daniel's eyes moved toward the house.

“Because Vanessa contacted me three weeks ago.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

Daniel continued.

“She told me Emily's evidence had been destroyed. She said Lily was about to lose the trust. She wanted me to help her retrieve the original documents.””

Vanessa's expression hardened.

“You promised not to tell him.””

“I promised to help you find the evidence. I never promised to let you hurt Lily.””

I stepped closer.

“What evidence?””

Daniel pointed toward the house.

“The secret pocket in the doll.””

I looked through the window.

Lily was sitting on the sofa.

The doll rested in her lap.

Then I noticed something.

The blue dress had been carefully placed over a small blanket.

Lily was holding the burned doll with both hands.

“Daddy!”” she called when she saw me.

I started toward the door.

Daniel grabbed my shoulder.

“Marcus, wait.””

I turned.

“What now?””

He looked directly at me.

“Before you open that pocket, you need to understand something.””

“What?””

“Emily didn't just hide documents in that doll.””

He took a breath.

“She hid proof that Lily's trust was never supposed to belong to you, me, or Vanessa.””

I stared at him.

“Then who was it supposed to belong to?””

Daniel looked toward the living room.

“Someone your father thought had died.””

Before I could ask another question, Lily screamed from inside the house.

“Daddy! There's something inside Mommy's doll!””

I rushed through the front door.

Lily stood beside the sofa, holding a small folded piece of paper.

Her eyes were wide.

“I found it,” she whispered.

I knelt beside her.

“What did you find, sweetheart?””

She held out the paper.

It was covered in Emily's handwriting.

But the message wasn't addressed to me.

It was addressed to Lily.
