Chapter 14: The Last Lie

I couldn't call her Mother.

The word caught in my throat.

Margaret walked into the room as if she had simply returned from a shopping trip.

She carried a leather handbag and wore the same pearl earrings she had worn in the family photographs.

For a moment, I was eight years old again.

Then I remembered the funeral.

The coffin.

The flowers.

The tears.

And the years I had spent visiting her grave.

“You're supposed to be dead,” I said.

Margaret smiled sadly.

“Things aren't always what they seem.””

“You let me bury you.””

“I had no choice.””

“You let me tell Lily that her grandmother was watching over her.””

Margaret's smile disappeared.

“Marcus, please.””

“No. Don't say my name like you have any right to comfort me.””

She glanced toward Caroline.

“You've been talking.””

Caroline remained seated.

“I've been telling the truth.””

Margaret sighed.

“That's always been your problem.””

Michael stood between them.

“You kept my mother imprisoned.””

“I protected her.””

“For years?””

“She was safer here than she would have been outside.””

Caroline laughed bitterly.

“You locked the doors. You controlled my medication. You decided when I could receive visitors.””

Margaret turned toward her.

“Because you wouldn't stop interfering.””

I stepped forward.

“Did you change Emily's medication?””

Margaret looked at me.

For the first time, she seemed genuinely offended.

“Emily was very ill.””

“That's not an answer.””

“Her treatment was complicated.””

“Did you order Dr. Pierce to change her prescriptions?””

She remained silent.

I felt my hands shaking.

“Did you?””

Margaret placed her handbag on the table.

“I wanted to protect this family.””

I laughed.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

She looked at me.

“Your father built everything we had. He worked for decades. He wasn't going to let a dying woman destroy it because she had become obsessed with old documents.””

“Emily was protecting Lily.””

“Emily was interfering.””

The words came out so casually that I almost didn't understand them.

I looked at Caroline.

She was crying silently.

Margaret continued.

“Your father believed you were too soft. He knew Daniel would never obey him. Michael was never part of the family. And Caroline wanted everything returned to her.””

“So you decided to control everyone?””

“I made difficult choices.””

“You faked your own death.””

“I had to disappear.””

“You let me grieve you.””

Margaret looked away.

For several seconds, I thought she might apologize.

Instead, she said, “You were always emotional.””

I stared at her.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message from Daniel.

*Vanessa has disappeared. She took Lily's passport and the original trust documents.*

My stomach dropped.

I immediately called him.

He answered on the first ring.

“Marcus, listen. Vanessa left the house about twenty minutes ago.””

“Where's Lily?””

“Safe. She's with me and Noah.””

“Did she take anything else?””

“Emily's remaining papers. And the envelope from the storage locker.””

I looked at Rachel.

She was already calling the police.

Margaret watched me.

“What happened?””

I turned toward her.

“Vanessa is missing.””

Margaret's expression changed.

“She wasn't supposed to leave.””

I froze.

“What?””

She picked up her handbag.

“Nothing.””

I stepped in front of her.

“You knew she was going to take the documents?””

Margaret looked at me.

“Vanessa was supposed to bring me the original trust agreement.””

“Why?””

“Because I need it.””

“For what?””

She stared at me.

“Because the money is no longer safe.””

Caroline began shaking her head.

“Margaret, don't.””

But my mother continued.

“Your father transferred the original ownership records before he died. I need those papers to release the final account.””

Rachel approached.

“What final account?””

Margaret looked at her.

“You should know. You signed the original documents.””

Rachel went pale.

Margaret smiled.

“Three million dollars. Hidden under a company that nobody has connected to the family yet.””

Michael stepped forward.

“Where is it?””

Margaret ignored him.

I looked at her.

“Where did Vanessa go?””

Margaret sighed.

“She was supposed to meet me at the old Bennett estate.””

“The house where Dad lived?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because that's where the original documents are hidden.””

I reached for my phone.

Margaret suddenly grabbed my wrist.

“Marcus, listen to me. If you go there, you will ruin everything.””

I pulled away.

“Good.””

She looked genuinely frightened.

“You don't understand. Your father left instructions. If the original trust agreement is removed from the estate, the remaining money will be transferred automatically.””

“To whom?””

Margaret hesitated.

Then she whispered:

“To Lily.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“Your daughter is the final beneficiary. Your father arranged it that way.””

Caroline stood.

“That's not what he wanted.””

Margaret turned toward her.

“You don't know what he wanted!””

Caroline's voice trembled.

“I know exactly what he wanted. He wanted the children to fight over money while he kept the evidence hidden.””

Rachel checked her phone.

“The police are on their way.””

Margaret's expression hardened.

She suddenly reached into her handbag.

Michael grabbed her arm.

A small black device fell onto the floor.

It was a recording transmitter.

Rachel picked it up.

“What's this?””

Margaret looked at me.

Then she smiled.

“Something your father taught me to use.””

My phone rang.

Daniel.

I answered.

His voice was frantic.

“Marcus, get back here immediately.””

“What happened?””

“The children are safe, but someone just called the house.””

“Who?””

Daniel swallowed.

“He said he was coming to collect Lily.””

I looked at Margaret.

She wasn't surprised.

Daniel continued.

“And Marcus…”

“What?””

“He knew Lily's full name, her school, and the time she gets home.””

My blood turned cold.

“Did he identify himself?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then he said:

“He called himself your father's attorney.””

I looked at Rachel.

She shook her head.

“Your father's attorney died years ago.””

I ended the call.

Margaret slowly sat down.

For the first time, she looked old.

Tired.

Afraid.

“Who is he?”” I demanded.

She looked at me.

“Your father had a partner.””

“Who?””

Margaret closed her eyes.

“The man who helped him create the false records, move the money, and arrange Emily's medication.””

I stepped closer.

“Who?””

She opened her eyes.

Then she gave me a name.

“Your mother's brother.””

I froze.

My uncle.

The man who had attended my father's funeral.

The man who had comforted me when Margaret supposedly died.

The man who had held Lily as a baby.

I looked at Rachel.

She whispered:

“Edward.””

Margaret nodded.

“Edward has been watching the family for years.””

Then she added something that made me understand why Vanessa had disappeared.

“He doesn't want the money, Marcus.””

May you like

She looked toward the door.

“He wants Lily.””
