Chapter 10: The Heir Nobody Told Me About

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

Caroline Hale stood beside the black SUV, one hand gripping the open passenger door.

She looked directly at me.

"Your father left the money to Vanessa's firstborn son.""

I turned toward Ethan.

"Is that true?""

Ethan looked down.

Caroline laughed.

"Of course it's true. Why else do you think Vanessa stayed involved with your family for so long?""

I felt something tighten in my chest.

"You're lying.""

"Am I?""

She reached into her handbag and produced a folded document.

"Ask Patricia Wells. She knows about the amendment.""

I didn't take the paper.

"Why would my father leave anything to a child he never met?""

Caroline's smile widened.

"Perhaps because he knew something you didn't.""

Daniel stepped between us.

"Mrs. Hale, I suggest you stop making statements until you've spoken with legal counsel.""

She ignored him.

"Your father was a sentimental old man. He believed he could fix everything by leaving money to children.""

She glanced at Ethan.

"And this one knows exactly what happened when he tried.""

Ethan stepped backward.

"Caroline, stop.""

She turned toward him.

"You've done enough damage.""

Then she looked at me again.

"Ask Vanessa about Lucas. Ask her why she never told you she had a child before your marriage. And ask her why your father paid for that boy's treatment.""

I felt my hands curl into fists.

"How much did my father pay?""

Caroline shrugged.

"More than you know.""

Daniel interrupted.

"We're finished here.""

He guided me toward our car.

Behind us, Caroline called out.

"One more thing, Marcus! Your wife isn't the villain you think she is. She's just the one who got caught!""

I turned.

"What does that mean?""

She opened the SUV door.

"It means you should be asking who really wanted your father dead.""

Then she drove away.

Ethan remained beside his vehicle.

Daniel approached him.

"You're coming with us. We need a formal statement.""

Ethan looked frightened.

"She knows I gave you the memory card.""

"Then that's another reason not to leave alone.""

He agreed.

We drove to Daniel's office.

Patricia was already waiting.

When she heard what Caroline had said, she immediately requested the original trust amendment.

"Your father couldn't simply change the beneficiary without proper documentation," she explained.

"We need the executed instrument, not a photocopy or someone's interpretation.""

Daniel placed the memory card on the table.

"And we need to know whether Ethan's recordings are authentic.""

Ethan sat opposite us.

"I can explain the trust.""

"Then start talking," I said.

He took a long breath.

"Lucas was born eleven years ago. Vanessa was nineteen. She was involved with a man named Andrew Miller.""

"Why didn't she tell me?""

"She was afraid you'd leave.""

I stared at him.

"She had years to tell me.""

"I know.""

"Did my father know about Lucas before our wedding?""

Ethan nodded.

"Richard told him.""

"Why?""

"Because Richard had already discovered the trust structure. He believed Lucas could become a way to influence the inheritance.""

Patricia leaned forward.

"Explain.""

Ethan continued.

"Your father originally established the trust for Noah and Maya. But he included a provision allowing additional grandchildren to receive support under certain circumstances.""

I frowned.

"So Lucas was eligible?""

"Not automatically. Your father had to formally recognize him as a beneficiary.""

"And did he?""

Ethan nodded.

"Three days before he died.""

I stood.

"Why?""

"Because he discovered Lucas was being used as leverage.""

"By whom?""

"Richard and Caroline.""

Ethan opened his hands.

"They told Vanessa that if she cooperated, they'd help pay for Lucas's medical treatment. They also promised to arrange a permanent financial settlement for him.""

Patricia shook her head.

"That's not generosity. That's coercion.""

"Exactly," Ethan said.

I paced across the room.

"Then why would my father make Lucas a beneficiary?""

"Because he wanted to protect the boy. He didn't want him used as a weapon against his mother.""

I stopped.

That sounded like my father.

He had never punished children for the mistakes of adults.

But one question remained.

"Did he remove Noah and Maya?""

Ethan shook his head.

"No. He divided the arrangement differently.""

Patricia looked at him sharply.

"Do you have proof?""

Ethan nodded toward the memory card.

"There's a copy of the original amendment in the files.""

Daniel immediately arranged for the forensic specialist to examine it.

Two hours later, Patricia received a preliminary report.

The document was authentic enough to warrant further verification, but it still required confirmation against the trustee's original records.

She read the relevant section aloud.

"Marcus Reed retains control of the company. Noah and Maya remain primary beneficiaries of the family trust. Lucas Miller receives a separate protected medical and educational fund.""

I closed my eyes.

My father hadn't chosen Lucas over my children.

He had tried to protect all three.

Then I noticed another paragraph.

"What's this?"" I asked.

Patricia adjusted her glasses.

"It appears your father also removed Richard Hale's administrative authority.""

I looked at Daniel.

"Then why is Richard still controlling the records?""

Patricia turned the page.

"Because the amendment was never properly entered into the trustee's official register.""

Silence filled the room.

My father's final instructions had been ignored.

Richard had continued acting as administrator.

And Vanessa had apparently helped him.

I looked at Ethan.

"Where is Vanessa now?""

"I don't know.""

"Call her.""

He hesitated.

"She won't answer.""

I took out my phone.

I had a message from an unknown number.

If you want the truth about Lucas, come to St. Mary's Children's Hospital. Alone.

I showed Daniel.

He immediately shook his head.

"Absolutely not.""

I stared at the message.

"What if it's Vanessa?""

"Then she can meet us somewhere secure.""

I typed a reply.

I'm not coming alone. Tell me where you are.

The response arrived almost immediately.

Room 314. Please, Marcus. I need to tell you what Richard did.

Daniel examined the number.

"We'll arrange for the authorities to be aware of the meeting.""

That evening, we arrived at St. Mary's.

Vanessa was sitting beside a hospital bed.

She looked exhausted.

Her hair was tied back carelessly, and her makeup had disappeared.

A young boy was sleeping beneath a blue blanket.

I recognized her eyes.

The same eyes Maya had.

Vanessa stood when she saw me.

"Thank you for coming.""

I remained near the door.

"Tell me the truth.""

She looked at the boy.

"That's Lucas.""

I glanced at him.

He was about nine years old, perhaps ten.

"What happened to him?""

Vanessa swallowed.

"He has a chronic heart condition. He's been receiving treatment for years.""

I looked at the medical equipment beside his bed.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I was ashamed.""

"Of having a child?""

"Of lying.""

I stared at her.

She began crying.

"Richard found out about Lucas before we got married. He told me my father-in-law had established a trust. He said he could make sure Lucas was protected.""

"And in exchange?""

"At first, nothing. Then he started asking me to sign documents.""

"Documents that gave him control of the trust.""

She nodded.

"Your father discovered what was happening. He confronted me.""

"What did he say?""

Vanessa wiped her eyes.

"He told me he would help Lucas, but I had to stop working with Richard.""

"And you didn't.""

"No.""

"Why?""

She looked at Lucas.

"Richard threatened to expose Lucas's medical records and take away the money he'd arranged for his treatment. He said he could make sure Andrew lost custody.""

I felt anger rising.

"You should have come to me.""

"I know.""

"You let me believe my father was protecting my children while you helped someone steal from them.""

"I know, Marcus!""

Her voice cracked.

"I was terrified.""

I looked at the sleeping boy.

Then back at her.

"Did you know Richard was trying to change the trust?""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

"Did you know he forged my signature?""

Another pause.

"Yes.""

I stepped back.

"Then why did you do it?""

Vanessa covered her face.

"Because Richard promised me two hundred thousand dollars to walk away from the custody arrangement. He said he'd handle everything afterward.""

My stomach tightened.

"That was the money you demanded at my door.""

She nodded.

I stared at her.

"You weren't returning the children because you had plans. You were trying to escape before Richard discovered what you'd done.""

Vanessa looked up.

"Yes.""

Then she reached into her handbag.

She removed a small envelope.

"Your father gave me this before he died.""

My breath caught.

"Why didn't you give it to me?""

"Because Richard told me it would destroy Lucas's future if I did.""

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a handwritten note.

Vanessa, protect all three children. Do not let Richard turn them against each other.

Beneath it was a second line.

If Marcus learns the truth, tell him what happened at the hospital.

I looked at her.

"What happened at the hospital?""

Vanessa began shaking.

"Marcus, I was there that night.""

I froze.

"What?""

She looked toward Lucas.

"Your father didn't die before I arrived.""

My throat went dry.

"Then what happened?""

She whispered:

"I heard him tell Richard that he had proof Richard had been stealing from the trust. And Richard said something I'll never forget.""

"What?""

May you like

Vanessa looked directly into my eyes.

"He said, 'Then you'll have to die with it.''"
