Chapter 13: The Truth Beneath the Wine Cellar

The drive to my father's old house felt endless.

Daniel sat beside me, speaking to the police dispatcher through his phone. Patricia followed in another vehicle.

I kept hearing Vanessa's final words.

I found your father's original medical records.

Then Richard's voice.

You weren't supposed to find those!

I gripped the steering wheel.

"Daniel, what if he's hurting her?""

"We've reported the threat. Officers are on their way.""

"What if he gets to those documents first?""

"Then we'll deal with whatever remains. Don't do anything reckless, Marcus.""

I didn't answer.

My father's house appeared through the trees.

The front door was open.

One of the windows had been smashed.

I parked and ran inside.

"Vanessa!""

No answer.

The house smelled of dust and old wood. Furniture stood beneath white protective sheets. My father's grandfather clock had stopped years ago, its hands frozen at 2:17.

Then I heard something.

A muffled cry.

It came from downstairs.

Daniel caught my arm.

"Wait.""

We listened.

Another sound.

"Marcus!""

Vanessa.

We rushed toward the cellar.

The door was open.

At the bottom of the stairs, I found Vanessa sitting on the floor, holding her left wrist. A wooden cabinet lay overturned beside her.

Richard stood near the old wine shelves.

He was holding a brown leather folder.

His expression changed when he saw me.

"You're making a terrible mistake.""

I stepped down.

"Put the folder down.""

Richard laughed.

"You still don't understand, do you?""

"Put it down.""

He held the folder against his chest.

"Your father was a stubborn old fool. He thought he could change everything with a few signatures.""

Daniel stepped into the cellar behind me.

"Richard Hale, put the documents down and step away from Vanessa.""

Richard ignored him.

"Do you know how much money your father had tied up in that trust? Millions. Money that could have changed every one of our lives.""

"You stole from your own company.""

"I protected it.""

"You paid people to lie in court.""

"I made sure the right people understood the situation.""

"You tried to take my children.""

His expression hardened.

"They were never supposed to remain with you.""

I felt my blood run cold.

"What?""

Richard looked almost amused.

"Your father made a promise to Caroline years ago. He promised that her family would never be left out of the inheritance.""

"Caroline isn't family.""

Richard laughed.

"That's what you think.""

Vanessa slowly pushed herself upright.

"Richard, stop.""

He turned toward her.

"You've caused enough trouble.""

"You told me Lucas would be protected.""

"I did protect him.""

"You used him!""

Richard's face twisted.

"Everything I did was to keep this family from falling apart.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"No. You wanted the money.""

Richard stepped toward her.

Daniel immediately moved between them.

"Stay where you are.""

For the first time, Richard seemed to realize he had lost control of the room.

He looked down at the leather folder.

Then he opened it.

Inside were medical records, financial statements, and several signed documents.

I recognized my father's handwriting on one page.

"Give me those.""

Richard smiled.

"These are the records that will destroy you.""

"Why?""

"Because your father was not the innocent man you've imagined.""

He pulled out a medical report.

"Your father was already seriously ill when he amended the trust. He was taking medication that affected his judgment. Do you really think a court will accept that amendment without questioning his capacity?""

Daniel extended his hand.

"Those records need to be examined independently.""

Richard shook his head.

"Not until I finish explaining.""

He looked at me.

"Your father discovered that the original trust had been mismanaged. He wanted to remove me, but he couldn't do it without exposing his own mistakes.""

"What mistakes?""

Richard hesitated.

Then he smiled.

"He knew about the transfers. He knew about the missing money. And he knew someone had been signing documents in his name.""

I looked at Vanessa.

She was staring at the floor.

"Who signed them?""

Richard answered.

"Vanessa.""

I turned toward her.

She shook her head.

"Some of them. I didn't know what they meant.""

Richard continued.

"Your father knew. He had the evidence. He intended to report everything.""

I stared at him.

"Then why did he die?""

Richard's smile disappeared.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa whispered:

"Because he refused to cooperate.""

Richard turned toward her.

"Be quiet.""

She looked at me.

"Marcus, I saw Caroline give Dr. Whitmore the folder. I heard them talking about the medication.""

Richard lunged toward her.

Daniel blocked him.

The folder slipped from Richard's hands.

I grabbed it.

A photograph fell onto the cellar floor.

It showed my father standing beside Richard and Caroline.

But this time, I noticed something I hadn't seen in the earlier photograph.

A fourth person stood behind them.

A young man.

I picked it up.

"Who is this?""

Richard went pale.

Vanessa stared at the photograph.

"That's Andrew.""

"Lucas's father?""

She nodded.

Richard slowly backed away.

"Give me the photograph.""

I held it out of reach.

"What was Andrew doing with you?""

Richard didn't answer.

Daniel picked up the fallen papers.

One document caught his attention.

He read it, then looked at Richard.

"Is this authentic?""

Richard said nothing.

Daniel turned the page toward me.

It was a signed agreement dated six years earlier.

The agreement showed that Andrew Miller had been paid to surrender certain parental and financial rights concerning Lucas.

The payment had come from a company controlled by Richard.

But there was another signature.

Caroline Hale.

I looked at Richard.

"You bought Lucas's future?""

Richard finally spoke.

"Andrew was willing to accept the money.""

"That doesn't explain why you were involved.""

Richard's jaw tightened.

"Because Lucas was the only person your father believed could unite the family.""

I stared at him.

"What?""

Richard looked at the photograph.

"Your father discovered something about Lucas's biological family. Something that would have changed everything.""

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Don't.""

Richard smiled.

"Your father knew who Lucas's real father was.""

I felt my stomach drop.

"Andrew is his father.""

Richard shook his head.

"No, Marcus.""

He looked directly at me.

"Andrew Miller isn't Lucas's biological father.""

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Then Richard said the words that changed everything.

"Your father knew Lucas was your half-brother's son.""

I couldn't speak.

I had no half-brother.

My father had never mentioned another son.

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

"Richard, you're under investigation. You need to stop making unsupported allegations.""

But Richard was already reaching into his jacket.

He pulled out a second document.

A birth certificate.

The father's name was listed as David Reed.

My father's name.

I stared at it.

"Who is David Reed?""

Richard smiled bitterly.

"Your father's first son.""

Then the police arrived upstairs.

Richard looked toward the stairs.

His expression changed.

He knew he was finished.

But before the officers entered the cellar, he leaned toward me and whispered:

"There's one more thing your father never told you.""

May you like

He glanced at Vanessa.

"Ask her what happened to David.""
