Chapter 8: The Box Beneath My Father's Floorboards

My father had given me the box six months before he died.

It was a small wooden box made of dark walnut, with a brass lock and a tiny scratch across the lid.

He had handed it to me during a Sunday dinner.

"Keep this somewhere safe, Marcus.""

I had laughed.

"What's inside? Family jewels?""

He hadn't laughed back.

"Something more important.""

I remembered asking whether I should open it.

He had placed his hand over mine.

"Not unless you have a reason.""

At the time, I'd thought it was another one of his eccentric habits.

Now I wondered whether he'd been trying to protect me.

The box was in my home office, inside a locked cabinet beneath several old financial files.

I called Daniel.

"Richard may be looking for something my father left me.""

"What?""

"A wooden box.""

"What's inside?""

"I don't know. My father told me not to open it.""

Daniel was silent.

"Then don't open it alone.""

We agreed to meet at my house.

Before he arrived, I went to the office and unlocked the cabinet.

The box was exactly where I'd left it.

I lifted it carefully.

It felt heavier than I remembered.

A small brass lock secured the front.

I tried the key my father had given me.

It turned.

Inside were three items.

A folded letter.

A silver USB drive.

And an old photograph.

The photograph showed my father standing beside a younger Richard Hale.

Between them was a woman I didn't recognize.

On the back, my father had written:

The three people who built the wrong future.

I placed the photograph on the desk.

Then I unfolded the letter.

Marcus,

If you are opening this box, I suspect something has happened that I was unable to prevent.

I made a mistake by trusting Richard. I made a greater mistake by believing that Vanessa understood what family meant.

There is a document in the USB drive that explains the real ownership of the company shares.

Do not give the document to Richard.

Do not let Vanessa persuade you to sign anything.

And above all, do not assume the person who appears to be helping you is telling you the truth.

I read the final sentence again.

Then Daniel arrived.

He examined the contents.

"Let's have the drive analyzed before we open anything.""

We connected it to an isolated forensic computer.

There were four files.

Three were financial spreadsheets.

The fourth was a video.

I clicked it.

My father appeared on the screen.

He was sitting in the same office where I had watched the earlier recording.

But this time, he looked directly into the camera.

"Marcus, if you're seeing this, I need you to listen carefully.""

He paused.

"Richard has been stealing from the company. But he's not the person who started the arrangement.""

I leaned forward.

My father continued.

"Several years ago, I created a private holding structure to protect the shares intended for my grandchildren. I asked Richard to administer the records. I believed he was trustworthy.""

He looked down at something on his desk.

"Then I discovered that someone had been using Vanessa's name to make unauthorized claims against the assets.""

I felt my chest tighten.

"Vanessa?""

My father nodded.

"At first, I believed she was unaware. I later discovered that she had signed documents she should never have seen.""

Daniel looked at me.

The video continued.

"There's a woman named Caroline Hale. She was involved from the beginning. She and Richard had a plan to gain control of the trust.""

My father's expression hardened.

"They needed someone with a direct connection to the family. Vanessa was that person.""

I stopped breathing.

My father leaned closer to the camera.

"Marcus, I tried to warn you. But you were in love, and I didn't want to destroy your marriage without proof.""

The recording ended.

Daniel sat back.

"That's significant.""

I stared at the blank screen.

"There's more.""

I opened the first spreadsheet.

It contained a list of transactions dating back nearly seven years.

Several payments had been made to companies I didn't recognize.

Some were connected to property acquisitions.

Others were listed as consulting expenses.

At the bottom was a total.

$3,420,000.

I looked at Daniel.

"Three million dollars?""

He nodded slowly.

"Your father appears to have been tracking these transactions.""

I opened the second spreadsheet.

This one listed individual names.

Richard Hale.

Caroline Hale.

Vanessa Reed.

Ethan Cole.

But there was another name.

Margaret Ellis.

I frowned.

"Margaret?""

Daniel studied the entry.

"She received two payments.""

"Why?""

The amounts were small.

$2,500 and $3,000.

Beside the payments was a description:

Document preservation.

I called Margaret immediately.

She answered on the second ring.

"Marcus?""

"Did my father pay you to preserve documents?""

She went quiet.

Then she sighed.

"I was hoping you wouldn't find that yet.""

"What does that mean?""

"Your father asked me to keep copies of certain records because he didn't trust Richard.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I promised him I wouldn't until you were ready.""

I looked at Daniel.

"Margaret, did you know about the money Vanessa received?""

"Some of it.""

"Did you know she was involved in the trust?""

Another pause.

"Yes.""

My anger rose.

"Then why did you tell me she wasn't?""

"I never said she wasn't.""

I closed my eyes.

"Margaret, what aren't you telling me?""

Her voice became unsteady.

"Your father believed Vanessa was being pressured. He thought Richard had something on her.""

"What?""

"I don't know exactly. But I remember him saying that she was afraid of losing something.""

"What could she possibly have been afraid of?""

Margaret hesitated.

Then she whispered:

"Her first child.""

I went still.

"Vanessa has never had another child.""

"Not with you.""

My mind began racing.

"What are you talking about?""

"Before you married Vanessa, she had a baby. A little boy. Your father found out shortly before the wedding.""

I gripped the edge of the desk.

"Where is he now?""

"I don't know.""

"Does Richard know?""

"I believe he does.""

I ended the call.

Daniel was watching me.

"Marcus, we need to verify this before jumping to conclusions.""

I nodded.

But the information had opened a door I hadn't known existed.

Vanessa had hidden an entire part of her life from me.

And if my father knew about it, perhaps that was what Richard had been using to control her.

That night, I checked on Noah and Maya before going to bed.

Maya was asleep with her rabbit under her chin.

Noah was awake, reading a comic book.

"Hey, Dad.""

"Hey, buddy.""

He closed the book.

"Can I ask something?""

"Of course.""

"Is Mom going to come back?""

I sat on the edge of his bed.

"I don't know, Noah.""

"Would that be bad?""

I chose my words carefully.

"What's important is that you feel safe. If you want to see her, we'll talk about how to make that happen safely.""

He nodded.

Then he reached beneath his pillow and pulled out a small folded paper.

"I found this in my jacket.""

I opened it.

It was a hotel invoice.

But unlike the previous receipt, this one had a handwritten note.

Caroline — Room 814. Keep the children until transfer is completed.

The invoice was dated two days before the custody hearing.

I looked at Noah.

"Where did you find this?""

"It was in Mom's bag. I thought it might be important.""

I hugged him.

"You did the right thing by giving it to me.""

Then I noticed the signature at the bottom.

It wasn't Vanessa's.

It wasn't Richard's.

It was Ethan Cole's.

And beside his signature was a second name.

May you like

A name I'd never seen before.

*Dr. Samuel Whitmore.*
