Chapter 2: The Receipt That Changed Everything
For several seconds, I couldn't hear anything except the rain hitting the windows.
I stared at the receipt.
It was a payment confirmation from the hotel.
The amount was $186,450.
The billing information listed Reed Construction Group, my company.
But the most disturbing detail was the authorization code.
I knew that code.
It belonged to a corporate purchasing card that had been canceled six weeks earlier.
I looked at Vanessa.
"Where did you get this?""
She reached for the receipt.
"That's private.""
I moved it behind my back.
"Why is my company paying for your hotel?""
"It was a temporary arrangement.""
"Almost two hundred thousand dollars?""
"You don't understand how expensive things are when you have children.""
I looked at Noah and Maya.
"Did you stay in that hotel for three months?""
Noah nodded.
"Most of the time.""
"Most of the time?""
He glanced at his mother.
Vanessa stepped forward.
"That's enough. They're tired.""
I ignored her.
"Noah, you can tell me anything. You're not in trouble.""
He rubbed his wet hands together.
"Sometimes Mom left us in the room.""
"How long?""
"I don't know. Sometimes until morning.""
My stomach tightened.
"Who stayed with you?""
"Ethan sometimes. But mostly the lady downstairs brought food.""
Vanessa snapped.
"That is not what happened.""
Noah flinched again.
I stood up.
"Don't shout at him.""
She rolled her eyes.
"Marcus, stop acting like you're some kind of hero. You weren't there.""
Those words struck harder than I expected.
She was right about one thing.
I hadn't been there.
I'd trusted the court to protect my children while I followed every rule it gave me.
I had believed they were living in a safe home with their mother.
Instead, they'd been living in a hotel room.
I turned to Ethan.
"How long have you been involved with my wife?""
He glanced at Vanessa.
"That's none of your business.""
"You're standing in my house, with my children, after midnight. It became my business.""
Vanessa stepped between us.
"Ethan has nothing to do with this.""
"Then why did my son say he lived with you?""
She opened her mouth but said nothing.
I took my phone from my pocket.
"I'm calling Daniel.""
Vanessa immediately changed her tone.
"Don't be ridiculous.""
I dialed my attorney.
Daniel answered on the fourth ring.
"Marcus? It's almost one in the morning.""
"Vanessa just brought Noah and Maya to my house. She wants $200,000 to sign over custody.""
There was a pause.
"What?""
"I also have a receipt showing that my company paid almost $190,000 for a hotel where the children have apparently been living.""
Daniel's voice became sharp.
"Don't sign anything. Don't transfer money. Keep the documents exactly as they are.""
"I wasn't planning on paying her.""
"Good. Photograph everything. Save the receipt. And Marcus?""
"Yes?""
"Don't let her leave with the children until we've established what the current custody order allows and whether they're safe.""
I looked toward Vanessa.
She was watching me with narrowed eyes.
"Understood.""
Daniel continued.
"I'm coming over. Call the police if there's any immediate safety concern. I'll contact the appropriate family court authorities first thing in the morning.""
When I ended the call, Vanessa was already reaching for the manila envelope.
"Give me my papers.""
I held it away from her.
"They're evidence now.""
She laughed.
"Evidence of what?""
"That's what we're going to find out.""
Ethan rubbed his forehead.
"Vanessa, I told you this was a bad idea.""
She turned on him.
"Shut up.""
He looked at me.
"You need to understand something. I didn't know she was using your company account.""
Vanessa spun around.
"Stop talking!""
I studied his face.
He looked frightened.
Not guilty.
Frightened.
"Did you know the children were staying in that hotel?"" I asked.
Ethan hesitated.
"Yes.""
"Did you know they were being left alone?""
"I thought someone was watching them.""
"Who?""
He didn't answer.
Vanessa grabbed his arm.
"We're leaving.""
I stepped aside from the doorway but kept my attention on the children.
"You aren't taking them anywhere tonight. We'll let the authorities and the court determine the proper arrangement.""
Vanessa's face turned red.
"You can't keep my children from me.""
"I didn't say that. I said we're not making another decision in the middle of the night.""
She pointed at me.
"You always do this. You make everything into a battle.""
I looked at Maya.
Her small hand was wrapped around the hem of my shirt.
"No," I said quietly.
"I'm done pretending nothing is wrong.""
Vanessa stormed outside.
Ethan followed, but before he reached the SUV, he turned around.
"Marcus.""
I looked at him.
"You should check the hotel account.""
"What hotel account?""
He swallowed.
"The one she opened under your company's name.""
Then he got into the SUV.
I watched the vehicle disappear down the street.
My phone buzzed.
Daniel.
Do not delete anything. I'll be there in twenty minutes.
I locked the front door and turned toward my children.
Noah was sitting on the couch, still wearing his wet jacket.
Maya had placed her rabbit beside her and was staring at the carpet.
I brought them hot chocolate.
Noah held the mug with both hands.
"Are you mad at us?""
The question nearly broke me.
I sat beside him.
"Why would I be mad at you?""
"Because we didn't tell you.""
I shook my head.
"Listen to me. You never have to apologize for telling me the truth.""
Maya climbed onto my lap.
"Mom said you didn't want us.""
I closed my eyes for a moment.
Then I kissed the top of her head.
"Your mom was wrong.""
"She said you were too busy.""
"I should have found a way to see you more. I will always try harder. But I never stopped wanting you.""
Maya began crying.
Noah stared into his hot chocolate.
Then he said something that made me put down my mug.
"Mom told us not to tell you about the man who came to the hotel.""
"What man?""
Noah reached into his jacket again.
This time, he pulled out a folded piece of paper.
It was a photograph.
A middle-aged man stood outside the hotel beside a silver sedan.
I recognized him immediately.
It was Richard Hale.
My company's chief financial officer.
The man who had managed our books for nine years.
I turned the photograph over.
There was handwriting on the back.
Tuesday. 8:40 p.m. He brought the money.
I looked at Noah.
"Who gave you this?""
"Ethan.""
"Why?""
Noah shook his head.
"He told me to keep it safe. He said if Mom found it, she'd get angry.""
My phone rang.
Daniel.
I answered immediately.
"Daniel, you need to see something.""
But before I could explain, he interrupted.
"Marcus, I've just checked the preliminary court filings.""
"What about them?""
"Vanessa submitted an address as the children's primary residence. It's not the hotel.""
"Whose address is it?""
Daniel paused.
"An empty property registered to a company controlled by Richard Hale.""
My fingers tightened around the phone.
Richard hadn't simply helped Vanessa pay for a hotel.
He might have been helping her conceal where my children were living.
May you like
And then Daniel said the words that changed the entire case.
"Marcus, I think someone has been using your company to fund this custody arrangement.""
