Chapter 11: The Night My Father Died

I couldn't process what Vanessa had just told me.

My father had been alive.

Richard had threatened him.

And Vanessa had heard it.

"Why didn't you tell the police?"" I asked.

She looked down.

"Because Richard told me he'd make sure Lucas never received treatment again.""

"That's your excuse?""

"No.""

Her voice broke.

"It's the truth.""

I stepped closer.

"Did you see Richard hurt my father?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"I saw him enter the hospital room. I heard them arguing. Then Dr. Whitmore came in.""

"What happened next?""

"Richard left. Dr. Whitmore stayed.""

"Did you see anyone else?""

She hesitated.

"Caroline.""

I stared at her.

"Caroline was there?""

Vanessa nodded.

"She was carrying a folder. She gave something to Dr. Whitmore.""

"What?""

"I don't know.""

I looked at Daniel.

He was taking notes.

"Vanessa, did you see your father-in-law conscious when you left?""

She swallowed.

"Yes.""

"Was he speaking?""

"Yes.""

"Did he appear seriously ill?""

She looked away.

"He was upset, but he was talking normally.""

I felt my stomach turn.

"Then why did the hospital records say he became unresponsive?""

"I don't know.""

"You're telling me you watched these people threaten my father, and then you walked away?""

Vanessa began crying.

"I was twenty-nine. I was scared. I had Lucas to think about.""

"And I had a father to bury!""

The words came out louder than I intended.

A nurse appeared in the doorway.

"Sir, please keep your voice down.""

I apologized and stepped into the corridor.

Daniel followed.

"Marcus, we need to be careful. Her testimony is important, but we need corroboration.""

I rubbed my face.

"What kind of corroboration?""

"Hospital records, surveillance footage if it still exists, medication records, and independent witness statements.""

I looked through the window at Lucas.

He was awake now.

Vanessa was sitting beside him, holding his hand.

The boy looked at her and smiled.

I felt an unfamiliar ache.

Lucas hadn't chosen any of this.

Neither had Noah or Maya.

Three children had been placed in the middle of a financial conspiracy by adults who were supposed to protect them.

Daniel's phone rang.

He answered.

"Yes?""

His expression changed.

"How certain are you?""

He listened for several seconds.

"Send it to me immediately.""

He ended the call.

"What happened?"" I asked.

"The hospital's archival department found a security recording from the night your father died.""

I stared at him.

"From the corridor?""

"Yes. It's old footage, but the system retained a backup.""

"What's on it?""

"Your father entered the hospital conscious. Richard arrived twenty-three minutes later. Caroline arrived shortly afterward.""

"Can we see it?""

"The hospital is reviewing the request. We can't simply take the footage, but the investigator handling the case is arranging access.""

We waited.

An hour later, Daniel received a secure link from the hospital's legal department.

The recording was grainy.

But the timestamps were clear.

At 10:42 p.m., two paramedics wheeled my father into the emergency department.

At 11:08 p.m., Richard entered through the main entrance.

At 11:21 p.m., Caroline followed.

At 11:36 p.m., Dr. Whitmore entered the corridor.

At 11:48 p.m., Richard left.

At 12:03 a.m., Caroline left.

But at 12:19 a.m., another figure appeared.

Vanessa.

She walked quickly toward the private treatment area.

At 12:31 a.m., she emerged.

She was crying.

At 12:44 a.m., Dr. Whitmore left the room carrying a medical folder.

And at 1:06 a.m., a nurse approached the desk and spoke to another staff member.

The recording didn't show what happened inside the room.

But it established that several people had been present.

Daniel paused the video.

"Look at the timestamp.""

I leaned closer.

At 12:27 a.m., someone had entered the room carrying a small paper bag.

The image was blurry.

But the person appeared to be wearing a dark coat.

"Can we identify them?""

"Not from this recording.""

I looked at the screen.

"Is there another camera?""

The hospital investigator had an answer.

A camera near the medication preparation area had recorded a clearer image.

The investigator arranged a formal review the following afternoon.

When the footage began, I immediately recognized the person carrying the bag.

Caroline Hale.

She was speaking to a nurse.

Then she handed over the bag.

The nurse examined it before walking away.

The investigator paused the recording.

"Do you know what was inside?""

"No," I replied.

He turned to the hospital representative.

"Can we identify the medication?""

The representative checked the archived administration records.

"Not yet. We need the original dispensing log.""

The investigator nodded.

"Then that's what we'll request.""

For the first time, I felt that the truth might finally be within reach.

But the investigation wasn't limited to my father's death.

Daniel had also received a report from the forensic accountant.

The accountant had examined the financial files from my father's USB drive.

There was evidence that Richard had diverted more than $3 million through several companies.

Some of the money had gone toward hotel expenses.

Some had been used to purchase properties.

And a significant portion had been transferred into an account registered under a company called Miller Family Holdings.

I stared at the report.

"Miller?""

Daniel nodded.

"Andrew Miller. Lucas's biological father.""

"Why would Richard send money to him?""

"That's what we're investigating.""

I called Vanessa.

She answered immediately.

"Marcus?""

"Did Richard pay Andrew Miller?""

She went silent.

"How do you know that?""

"Answer me.""

She began crying.

"Richard said it was for Lucas.""

"How much?""

"Two hundred and fifty thousand dollars.""

I looked at Daniel.

"Did Andrew know where the money came from?""

"I don't know.""

"Did you know?""

Vanessa whispered:

"I found out after the transfer.""

I ended the call.

Daniel shook his head.

"She's still withholding information.""

I agreed.

Then my phone rang again.

This time, it was Noah's school principal.

"Mr. Reed, I'm sorry to disturb you, but something happened.""

My heart dropped.

"What?""

"Someone came to collect Noah and Maya.""

"Who?""

"A woman claiming to be their aunt.""

I gripped the phone.

"Did you release them?""

"No. We followed the updated restrictions.""

"Who was it?""

The principal hesitated.

"Caroline Hale.""

I closed my eyes.

"Are the children safe?""

"Yes. They're with their teacher.""

I thanked her and immediately called the police.

When I arrived at the school, Caroline was standing near the entrance arguing with the receptionist.

She held a printed custody document.

"I am legally authorized to collect them," she insisted.

The receptionist shook her head.

"You're not listed as an approved guardian.""

Caroline spotted me.

"Marcus.""

I walked toward her.

"Get away from my children's school.""

She smiled.

"You're making a scene.""

"You tried to take them.""

"I was helping Vanessa.""

"Vanessa didn't send you.""

Caroline's smile faded.

"She's not in a position to make decisions right now.""

"What does that mean?""

She looked past me toward the hallway.

"Ask her what she signed this morning.""

I took out my phone.

"What did she sign?""

Caroline adjusted her coat.

"An agreement transferring her parental rights.""

I stared at her.

"To whom?""

She smiled again.

"To me.""

For a moment, the entire school seemed to go silent.

"That's impossible.""

"Is it?""

She held up the document.

"Your wife signed it voluntarily. Richard arranged everything.""

I took a step forward.

"Where is the original?""

Caroline's eyes narrowed.

"Somewhere safe.""

Then she leaned closer.

"And if you want to keep those children, Marcus, you'd better stop looking into your father's death.""

She walked toward the parking lot.

I didn't follow her.

Instead, I called Daniel.

"Caroline claims Vanessa transferred her parental rights.""

Daniel's voice hardened.

"Send me whatever she showed you. We need to verify whether it's valid. She cannot simply become their guardian through a private piece of paper.""

I watched Caroline get into her SUV.

Then I saw something through the passenger window.

A small blue folder.

The same color as the folder my father had kept in his office.

I remembered the handwritten note.

Do not assume the person who appears to be helping you is telling you the truth.

And suddenly I understood.

Someone had been feeding me information in carefully measured pieces.

Ethan.

Margaret.

Vanessa.

Even Patricia.

I had assumed they were all trying to help.

But what if someone had been guiding me toward a specific conclusion?

That evening, Daniel called.

"Marcus, we have a problem.""

"What now?""

"The trust administrator received an emergency filing.""

"From whom?""

"Vanessa Reed.""

"What does she want?""

Daniel paused.

"She's requesting that all three children's trust funds be frozen pending a determination of guardianship.""

"All three?""

"Yes. Including Lucas.""

I stared at the wall.

Then Daniel added:

"She's also naming you as a person of interest in the alleged disappearance of the original trust amendment.""

I couldn't believe it.

Vanessa was now accusing me of hiding the very document my father had left me.

And the filing contained an affidavit claiming I had threatened her at the hospital.

I looked at the date.

It had been signed that morning.

May you like

At the bottom was another signature.

Richard Hale.
