Chapter 14: The Truth No One Could Bury

Detective Foster ordered Richard against the wall.

"Don't move.""

He obeyed, but his eyes never left mine.

"Ask her, Marcus.""

I turned toward the detective.

"What is he talking about?""

"He's trying to confuse you.""

Richard laughed.

"Am I? Tell him about the first investigation, Helen.""

The room went silent.

Detective Foster's jaw tightened.

Daniel stepped between us.

"Richard, stop talking.""

But he continued.

"Helen Foster handled the original hospital inquiry fourteen years ago. She signed the closure report.""

I looked at her.

"Is that true?""

She didn't answer immediately.

That silence frightened me more than anything Richard had said.

Finally, she lowered her weapon slightly.

"I was a junior investigator assigned to a missing-infant complaint. The hospital reported that the child had been transferred legally. I reviewed the paperwork and found no evidence of a crime.""

"Did you know the records had been altered?""

"No.""

Richard shook his head.

"She knew enough.""

Detective Foster turned toward him.

"You're going to regret that statement.""

He smiled.

"Maybe. But you should tell Marcus why your signature appears on the authorization.""

I stared at her.

She looked pale.

Then she said, "I signed a document confirming that the hospital had supplied the records requested by the court. I did not authorize a child transfer.""

"Can you prove that?"" I asked.

"Yes. The original file should show the difference.""

Richard suddenly lunged toward the door.

Two officers tackled him before he reached the hallway.

As they handcuffed him, he shouted:

"Emily lied to you, Marcus! She lied about all of it!""

I watched him being dragged away.

For the first time, I wasn't sure which part of the truth I could trust.

At the station, Detective Foster requested a full review of the original investigation.

She also arranged for independent DNA testing.

I agreed to provide my sample.

So did Maya, Lucy, Noah, and Hannah.

Hannah had been brought in from her home after Rebecca explained the situation to her.

She sat quietly beside Lucy.

Her hands were trembling.

"Is she really my mother?"" she asked.

Lucy took her hand.

"I believe so.""

Hannah looked at Noah.

"And he's really my brother?""

Noah nodded.

"Looks that way.""

She gave a nervous laugh.

"I always wanted a brother.""

Noah smiled sadly.

"I always wanted a sister.""

I watched them together.

Two children who had been separated before they could remember each other.

Two lives shaped by decisions made by adults who thought they could rewrite the truth.

Then Maya entered.

She looked at Hannah for a long moment.

"Are you my sister?""

Hannah looked toward Lucy.

"We don't know yet.""

Maya sat beside her.

"That's okay. We can still be friends.""

Hannah smiled.

"Deal.""

I wanted to believe that everything would be simple from there.

But the DNA results would decide what the documents could not.

The laboratory called the following afternoon.

Detective Foster asked everyone to gather in the conference room.

A specialist named Dr. Ellis appeared on a secure video call.

"We've completed the first round of testing," she said.

My heart pounded.

She explained the results one by one.

Lucy was confirmed as Noah's biological mother.

Hannah was also confirmed as Lucy's biological daughter.

The two shared the same biological parents.

They were twins.

Lucy began crying.

Noah held her hand.

Then Dr. Ellis moved to the next result.

"Maya Reed is not biologically related to Lucy Hart or Hannah Hart.""

Maya looked at me.

I squeezed her hand.

"That's all right, sweetheart.""

Dr. Ellis continued.

"However, Maya's DNA does show a biological relationship with Richard Cole.""

The room went silent.

I felt the air leave my lungs.

"How close?"" Daniel asked.

Dr. Ellis looked at her report.

"Richard Cole is confirmed as Maya's biological father.""

Maya's face went pale.

She looked at me.

"Does that mean you're not my dad?""

I immediately knelt in front of her.

"No. It means someone lied about where you came from. It doesn't change who raised you.""

She stared into my eyes.

"Promise?""

"I promise.""

Then Dr. Ellis continued.

"There is another result. The biological mother of Maya Reed is not Vanessa Cole.""

I looked up.

"Then who?""

Dr. Ellis paused.

"We're still comparing the remaining samples. However, the available genetic markers strongly indicate that Maya's biological mother is a woman whose DNA has not yet been submitted.""

I frowned.

"Who?""

The doctor checked her notes.

"Her name appears in the original hospital file as Claire Bennett.""

Daniel went completely still.

I turned toward him.

"Do you know that name?""

He looked away.

"Yes.""

"Who is she?""

Daniel swallowed.

"Emily's younger sister.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Emily had a sister?""

He nodded.

"Claire disappeared from the family years before Emily met you. I thought she had moved overseas.""

I looked at the photograph of Emily holding baby Maya.

"Why would Emily raise her sister's child without telling me?""

Daniel had no answer.

Then Maya spoke.

"Maybe Mommy was protecting me.""

Everyone turned toward her.

She looked down at her hands.

"She always said I was loved before I was born.""

I pulled her close.

For the first time, I understood that Emily's secrets hadn't necessarily been about hiding the truth from me.

Some of them had been about protecting the people she loved.

But there was still one person who could explain everything.

Claire Bennett.

That evening, Detective Foster received a call from the hospital.

The original medical archive had been accessed remotely.

Someone had attempted to delete the remaining birth records.

The hospital's security team blocked the request.

But the access credentials belonged to a former administrator.

Vanessa.

Detective Foster immediately issued a warrant.

Before the officers could reach her last known address, my phone rang.

It was Vanessa.

"Marcus, you need to listen carefully.""

"Where are you?""

"That doesn't matter.""

"Did you try to destroy the hospital records?""

She began crying.

"I was trying to protect Maya.""

"From what?""

There was a long silence.

Then she whispered:

"From Claire.""

I gripped the phone.

"Where is she?""

Vanessa took a shaky breath.

"She's been watching your family for years.""

Then the call ended.

A moment later, a text arrived.

It contained an address.

May you like

And one sentence.

*ASK CLAIRE WHY EMILY DIED.*
