Chapter 9: The Child Vanessa Claimed Was Hers
I called Rachel immediately.
She answered in a whisper.
"Marcus, she's here.""
"Where's Maya?""
"Upstairs. I locked the door.""
"Don't let Vanessa near her.""
"I won't.""
I turned toward Daniel.
"Drive.""
He started the engine.
We reached Rachel's house in seven minutes.
Vanessa was standing on the front porch.
She wore a long beige coat and held a brown envelope.
Her hair was perfectly styled.
Her makeup was flawless.
She looked like someone arriving for a pleasant family visit.
Not someone who had just been accused of helping conceal a child's identity.
When she saw me, she smiled.
"Marcus.""
I stepped out of the car.
"Get away from the house.""
She held up the envelope.
"I have something for Maya.""
"She doesn't want anything from you.""
"That's because you keep filling her head with lies.""
I walked toward the porch.
"Leave.""
Vanessa looked past me at Daniel.
"You brought him?""
Daniel stepped forward.
"Vanessa, this is over.""
She laughed.
"You've been saying that for years.""
I stopped.
"What does that mean?""
Vanessa ignored me.
She looked directly at Daniel.
"Did you tell him what happened to Emily?""
"I told him what I know.""
"Then you haven't told him enough.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"What aren't you telling me?""
Vanessa opened the envelope.
Inside was a faded photograph.
It showed Emily in a hospital bed holding a newborn baby.
But there was something different about this picture.
Emily wasn't alone.
A second woman was lying in the bed beside her.
I recognized Vanessa.
She looked younger, thinner, and exhausted.
On the back was a handwritten date.
The date Maya was born.
I stared at it.
"Why were you in the hospital with Emily?""
Vanessa smiled.
"Because we were both giving birth that night.""
The world seemed to stop.
I looked at Daniel.
He was staring at the photograph.
"That's impossible," I whispered.
Vanessa stepped closer.
"Is it?""
She pointed toward the hospital bracelet on Emily's wrist.
Then toward the bracelet on her own.
"Two babies. Two mothers. One family secret.""
I felt my heart pounding.
"Where is this going?""
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
"Emily gave birth to a boy. I gave birth to a girl.""
I shook my head.
"No.""
"Yes.""
"That's not true.""
"Then explain why Emily spent so much time protecting Noah.""
I stared at her.
She continued.
"Because Noah was never supposed to be Lucy's child.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"That's enough.""
Vanessa turned toward him.
"Tell him.""
Daniel said nothing.
"Tell him what Emily did.""
I looked between them.
"Daniel?""
He closed his eyes.
Vanessa held up the photograph.
"Emily and I were both pregnant. We were both connected to the Reed family. And when the babies were born, one of them died.""
My stomach dropped.
"Which baby?""
Vanessa looked at me.
"Mine.""
I couldn't speak.
"Emily couldn't accept it," she continued.
"She was terrified of telling me. So she made a decision.""
I looked at Daniel.
"What's she talking about?""
He finally answered.
"Vanessa's daughter died shortly after birth. Emily's son survived.""
Vanessa's voice became bitter.
"And Emily gave me her son.""
I stepped backward.
"You're saying Noah is Emily's biological son?""
Vanessa nodded.
"And Maya?""
She smiled coldly.
"Maya is mine.""
The words struck me like a physical blow.
I stared at her.
"You're lying.""
"Am I?""
She opened the envelope again and pulled out a second document.
It was a hospital record.
The baby's name was listed as Maya Cole.
The mother's name was Vanessa Cole.
The father's name was blank.
I looked at Daniel.
He seemed unable to meet my eyes.
"Tell me this isn't true.""
Daniel swallowed.
"I don't know if the document is authentic.""
Vanessa laughed.
"Of course it is.""
She stepped toward the front door.
"Now, Marcus, I want my daughter.""
I blocked her path.
"Maya is my daughter.""
"Biologically, she's mine.""
"That doesn't give you the right to take her.""
Vanessa's expression hardened.
"You've raised her long enough.""
I felt a wave of anger so strong that I could barely speak.
"Get away from this house.""
She held up the photograph again.
"Ask Maya what Emily told her about the night she was born.""
I stared at her.
"What?""
"Ask her why Emily always called her my little miracle.""
Vanessa leaned closer.
"Ask her why Emily never let you see the original hospital bracelet.""
Then the upstairs window opened.
Maya stood behind the curtain.
"Dad?""
I looked up.
"Sweetheart, stay inside.""
She looked at Vanessa.
Then she said something that made the entire porch go silent.
"You're wrong.""
Vanessa turned.
Maya stepped closer to the window.
"Mommy told me who my real mother was.""
Vanessa's face changed.
"Don't listen to him, Maya.""
Maya shook her head.
"Mommy said my real mother was the woman who loved me enough to tell me the truth.""
Vanessa's lips trembled.
Maya continued.
"She said you would come back one day and try to take something that wasn't yours.""
I looked at Daniel.
He was staring at the little girl with tears in his eyes.
Vanessa took a step backward.
Then she whispered:
"Emily told you that?""
Maya nodded.
"She also told me something else.""
"What?""
Maya disappeared from the window.
A few seconds later, Rachel opened the front door.
Maya stood beside her holding a small white envelope.
She walked directly toward me.
"Dad, Mommy said you should open this when Vanessa came back.""
I took the envelope.
Inside was a single photograph.
It showed Emily holding newborn Maya.
But on the back, Emily had written:
*THIS IS NOT THE BABY VANESSA LOST. THIS IS THE BABY SHE TRIED TO REPLACE.*
Beneath it was another sentence.
*MARCUS, THE CHILD WHO DIED WAS NEVER VANESSA'S.*
I looked up.
Vanessa was no longer smiling.
May you like
And Daniel, standing behind me, whispered the words I had been dreading.
"Marcus, I think we've been looking at the wrong birth records all along.""
