Chapter 6: The Name Emily Had Been Hiding
I drove straight to Daniel's office.
Maya stayed with my sister, who lived fifteen minutes away.
I didn't want her hearing another conversation about Vanessa, stolen children, or secrets her mother had carried to the grave.
When I arrived, Daniel was standing beside his desk with a thick folder in his hands.
He looked exhausted.
"Sit down, Marcus.""
I remained standing.
"Tell me what you found.""
He opened the folder.
Inside were photocopies of hospital records, adoption documents, and an old photograph of two women standing outside a maternity ward.
One was Emily.
The other was a younger woman with dark hair.
I recognized Vanessa immediately.
But the date printed beneath the photograph was impossible.
It was from twenty-eight years earlier.
"Why were they together?"" I asked.
Daniel placed another document on the desk.
"Because they were born in the same hospital.""
I stared at him.
"That's all?""
"No. Look at the registration numbers.""
I leaned closer.
There were two separate entries.
Emily Reed.
Vanessa Cole.
But the hospital had recorded an amendment to Vanessa's birth certificate.
The original entry had been crossed out.
In its place was a different surname.
I looked up.
"Why was it changed?""
Daniel opened another page.
"Because Vanessa was originally registered under the name Emily's biological family had been using.""
I frowned.
"You're saying they were related?""
"That's what the records suggest.""
He turned the page.
A handwritten note appeared at the bottom.
*INFANT TRANSFER AUTHORIZED BY MATERNAL GRANDMOTHER. BIOLOGICAL PARENTAGE DISPUTED.*
I sat down slowly.
"Daniel, explain this.""
He rubbed his forehead.
"Twenty-eight years ago, two babies were born within hours of each other. One was registered under the Reed family. The other was registered under the Cole family.""
"Okay.""
"But the original hospital records indicate that the babies may have been switched during an emergency transfer.""
I stared at him.
"Switched?""
"One infant was placed under the wrong identity. The hospital later corrected the records, but the amendment was sealed after a family dispute.""
I looked at Vanessa's photograph.
"Was she Emily's sister?""
Daniel shook his head.
"Not biologically, according to the corrected records.""
"Then what was she?""
"That's what I'm trying to establish.""
He handed me another sheet.
It was a letter from Emily to the hospital administrator.
I am not asking you to reopen the case because I want to hurt anyone. I am asking because the child who grew up believing she belonged to the Cole family has been using that belief to manipulate other people.
Vanessa knows what happened. She knows why her original records were changed.
And she knows that the truth would destroy the story she has told everyone about herself.
I read the letter again.
"Emily knew Vanessa's past.""
"Yes.""
"Did she know why Vanessa wanted this house?""
Daniel opened the final document.
It was a copy of an old trust agreement.
The name at the top belonged to Emily's grandmother.
The document described a property inheritance arrangement established decades earlier.
My eyes moved down the page.
Then I stopped.
The house.
Our house.
It had originally belonged to Emily's grandmother.
And according to the trust agreement, it was intended to remain in the family for the benefit of a child who had been born into the original Reed line.
I looked at Daniel.
"Emily inherited this property from her grandmother.""
"Correct.""
"And I inherited it when she died.""
"Correct.""
"But Vanessa...""
"May have a competing claim if she can establish that the original hospital records make her part of the same inheritance line.""
I leaned back.
"She wants the house because she believes she has a claim to it.""
Daniel nodded.
"And because the original trust documents are hidden somewhere inside it.""
I remembered Emily's letter.
Something under Maya's floor.
Something that belonged to Maya.
"Why would Emily leave the documents for Maya?""
Daniel's expression became serious.
"Because the trust may have named Maya as the final beneficiary.""
The room went silent.
I stared at the metal box photograph.
The letters.
The flash drive.
The hidden compartment.
Emily had been protecting more than memories.
She had been protecting our daughter.
Daniel continued reviewing the documents.
"There's another problem.""
"What now?""
"The trust requires the beneficiary's identity to be verified through the original hospital records.""
I looked at him.
"And Vanessa has been trying to get those records?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"Because if she can challenge the original registration, she may be able to delay or contest the inheritance.""
I shook my head.
"She's trying to take my daughter's house.""
Daniel didn't answer.
He didn't need to.
I picked up my phone and called Vanessa.
She answered after the fourth ring.
"What?""
"Where are you?""
"Why?""
"We need to talk.""
"I'm busy.""
"About Emily.""
Silence.
Then she laughed.
"I knew you'd eventually start obsessing over her again.""
"Stop pretending you don't know what I'm talking about.""
Her voice became sharp.
"What did Daniel tell you?""
That was enough.
I closed my eyes.
"So you know.""
"Marcus, you're being manipulated.""
"By whom?""
"By people who want to destroy our marriage.""
"Did you know Emily had the original trust documents?""
Vanessa didn't respond.
"Did you know Maya is named in the inheritance?""
Her breathing changed.
Then she said, "That child doesn't understand what she has.""
I felt something break inside me.
"She's eleven years old.""
"Exactly. She can't manage a property or a trust.""
"Neither can you.""
"At least I'm old enough to understand what things are worth.""
I stared at the phone.
There it was.
The truth.
Not a family dispute.
Not a misunderstanding.
Money.
Property.
Control.
I lowered my voice.
"Did you marry me because of this house?""
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
"Don't flatter yourself.""
"Answer me.""
"You think Emily was innocent? You think she didn't know exactly what she was doing?""
"What did she do?""
Vanessa went silent.
Then she said something I would never forget.
"She stole the life that was supposed to be mine.""
The call ended.
That evening, I returned to the house with Daniel.
We had agreed not to disturb the hidden compartment until a proper inventory could be made.
But something was wrong.
The front door was unlocked.
The hallway lights were on.
And the sound of drawers opening came from upstairs.
I ran.
Vanessa was in Maya's bedroom.
The room had been partially restored, but the floorboards near the old bed were exposed.
She was kneeling beside them, holding a screwdriver.
A small black case sat open beside her.
"Get away from that floor!"" I shouted.
She spun around.
For a second, she looked like someone caught stealing.
Then she stood.
"You're too late.""
Daniel stepped into the doorway.
"What are you doing?""
Vanessa shoved the screwdriver into her handbag.
"Looking for something that belongs to me.""
"Nothing in this room belongs to you," I said.
Her eyes moved toward the floor.
"You don't understand what Emily did.""
"I understand that she left instructions to protect Maya.""
Vanessa laughed.
"Protect her from what? The truth?""
"Yes. Apparently.""
She stepped toward me.
"Emily told you she was protecting the family. She never told you what she stole.""
I looked at Daniel.
He remained still.
"What did she steal?"" I asked.
Vanessa smiled.
"The original inheritance certificate.""
I stared at her.
"Why?""
"Because it proves who the real beneficiary is.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"Vanessa, you need to leave this property.""
She ignored him.
Instead, she reached into her handbag and pulled out a folded document.
"You want to know why I moved Maya's things? Why I needed this room empty?""
She unfolded the paper.
It was an old hospital registration form.
The name at the top was Emily Reed.
But the baby's photograph attached to it was not Emily.
It was Vanessa.
She pointed to a handwritten note beside the photograph.
"Emily knew the hospital had made a mistake. She knew I was the rightful heir to the Reed estate.""
I looked at the document.
Then at Vanessa.
"You're lying.""
Her smile disappeared.
"Am I?""
She tossed the paper onto Maya's bed.
"Read the last line.""
Daniel picked it up.
His expression changed as he read.
I moved closer.
At the bottom of the page was a handwritten statement.
*BIOLOGICAL CHILD TRANSFERRED TO THE CARE OF EMILY REED — PERMANENT GUARDIANSHIP APPROVED.*
I looked at Daniel.
"What does this mean?""
He didn't answer.
Vanessa did.
"It means Emily raised the wrong child under the wrong name.""
My stomach turned.
She stepped closer and whispered:
"And it means Maya isn't the person you think she is.""
Before I could respond, my phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number appeared.
There was an attached photograph.
It showed Lucy Hart standing outside a hospital.
Beside her was a teenage boy.
May you like
Under the photograph were seven words:
*WE FOUND NOAH. HE KNOWS WHO HIS REAL MOTHER IS.*
