Chapter 4: The Baby in the Photograph

For several seconds, I couldn't take my eyes off the photograph.

Emily was sitting in a hospital bed, pale and exhausted, holding a newborn baby wrapped in a blue blanket. Her hair was pulled back, and there was a faint smile on her face.

On the back, in her unmistakable handwriting, were the words:

*THE NIGHT VANESSA'S SON DISAPPEARED.*

I read it again.

Then I looked at Daniel.

"What does this mean?""

Daniel didn't answer immediately. He picked up the photograph, examined the date, and turned it over again.

"Marcus, do you remember Emily mentioning Vanessa before you met her?""

"No. Why?""

"Because the date on this photograph is important.""

I stared at the picture.

"Emily and I weren't even together with Vanessa at that point.""

"Exactly.""

Maya was sitting beside me, clutching her stuffed rabbit.

"Is that Mommy's baby?"" she asked.

I looked at her.

"I don't know, sweetheart.""

Daniel gently closed the metal box.

"I think we should read the letters before making assumptions.""

I picked up the envelope addressed to me.

The paper was yellowed around the edges. Emily's handwriting filled both sides.

Marcus,

There are things I never told you because I was afraid of what would happen if I did. I know you trusted me completely, and I never wanted you to believe I had secrets from you.

But when I discovered what Vanessa had done, I realized that protecting you sometimes meant keeping certain information away from you.

My throat tightened.

Daniel pulled a chair closer.

I continued.

Four years ago, before you knew Vanessa, I met her through a charity organization. She was volunteering at a women's shelter. She told everyone she had recently lost custody of her newborn son after a complicated hospital incident.

I felt sorry for her. I helped her find legal assistance.

Then I discovered that the baby had never been legally registered under her name.

I stopped.

"What?""

Daniel leaned forward.

"Keep going.""

The hospital records showed that the child had been born to another woman. Vanessa had been present during the delivery and had claimed to be the baby's guardian. She told the hospital staff that the biological mother had abandoned him.

But the biological mother had never signed any adoption papers.

My fingers tightened around the letter.

"Vanessa stole a baby?""

Daniel shook his head.

"We don't know that yet.""

I continued.

I confronted Vanessa. She told me the mother was unstable and that she was only trying to protect the child. She begged me not to report her.

I believed her at first.

That was my mistake.

The next paragraph was shorter.

Two weeks later, the baby disappeared from the shelter.

I looked up.

"How did Emily know?""

Daniel was already examining the flash drive.

"Let's see whether there's more evidence.""

Maya tugged my sleeve.

"Dad, is Vanessa a bad person?""

I looked at my daughter.

"I think she's done things she needs to answer for.""

"Did Mommy know she would come into our family?""

I couldn't answer.

Because the letter suggested something far worse.

Emily had known Vanessa before I ever met her.

And Vanessa had somehow entered my life anyway.

Daniel connected the flash drive to his laptop.

There were scanned documents, photographs, and several audio files.

The first document was a hospital incident report.

The second was a photograph of a woman holding a newborn baby.

The woman's name was written beneath it.

*LUCY HART.*

I recognized the hospital bracelet on her wrist.

The same hospital where Emily had volunteered.

Daniel opened another file.

It was an audio recording.

Emily's voice came through the speakers.

"If you're hearing this, Marcus, then Vanessa has probably found the box.""

A chair creaked in the background.

Then another woman's voice answered.

"Emily, please. You don't understand.""

It was Vanessa.

I felt the blood drain from my face.

The recording continued.

"I understand perfectly," Emily said.

"You told everyone that Lucy abandoned her son. But she has been searching for him for three years.""

"She isn't fit to raise him.""

"That's not your decision.""

"She was using drugs. She couldn't even keep a job.""

"Then why did you take him?""

There was a long silence.

Then Vanessa spoke.

"Because someone had to.""

Emily's voice became colder.

"You don't get to steal a child and call it love.""

The recording ended.

Maya had moved closer to me.

"That's Vanessa?""

I nodded.

"Yes.""

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

"Marcus, this is serious. We need to preserve everything and contact the proper authorities.""

I stared at the laptop.

"There's more.""

I opened the folder marked PRIVATE.

Inside was a document titled FAMILY REGISTRATION.

It contained three names.

Lucy Hart.

Vanessa Cole.

And a boy named Noah.

The date was four years earlier.

But something was wrong.

Noah's date of birth was identical to the date on the photograph of Emily holding the baby.

I looked at Daniel.

"Why would Emily have this?""

He studied the document.

"Maybe she was trying to establish the child's identity.""

"Then why didn't she tell me?""

Daniel's expression softened.

"Perhaps she was waiting until she had enough proof.""

I looked toward Maya.

"Let's read her letter.""

The envelope bearing Maya's name was still inside the box.

I opened it carefully.

It contained a single sheet of paper.

My beautiful Maya,

If Daddy ever shows you this letter, it means something happened that I couldn't prevent.

I want you to remember one thing. You were never second place in my heart. Not for one second.

There is something under your bedroom floor that belongs to you. I left it there because I wanted you to have it when you were old enough to understand.

Don't let anyone tell you that you don't belong in your home.

Love, Mommy.

Maya began crying silently.

I wrapped my arms around her.

Daniel stood up.

"We need to secure the documents.""

I nodded.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A woman's voice whispered:

"Is this Marcus Reed?""

"Yes. Who is this?""

"My name is Lucy Hart.""

I stood completely still.

She continued.

"I think you found something that belongs to me.""

I looked at the photograph.

The baby in Emily's arms.

The woman who had been searching for him.

"How did you get my number?"" I asked.

"I've been trying to reach you for years. Emily gave me your contact information before she died.""

My heart started pounding.

"Do you know Vanessa?""

Lucy gave a broken laugh.

"Know her? Mr. Reed, Vanessa is the reason I never got to raise my son.""

May you like

Then she said something that changed everything.

"Your wife didn't just hide evidence of what Vanessa did. She knew where my son was living.""
