Chapter 5: The Woman Who Never Stopped Looking

I asked Lucy to meet us at Daniel's office that afternoon.

She arrived twenty minutes early.

She was in her late thirties, wearing a faded brown coat and carrying a photograph inside a plastic folder.

Her hands shook when she introduced herself.

"Thank you for agreeing to see me.""

I stood.

"You're Lucy?""

She nodded.

Daniel offered her a chair.

"Before we discuss anything, I need to make sure we understand what happened.""

Lucy placed the photograph on the desk.

It showed a newborn baby sleeping in a hospital bassinet.

A blue blanket covered his body.

I recognized it immediately.

The same blanket from Emily's photograph.

"That's Noah," Lucy whispered.

I looked at her.

"Your son?""

"Yes.""

She touched the photograph with one finger.

"He was born on October seventeenth. I remember every detail of that night. The rain outside the hospital.

The nurse with red glasses. The little mark behind his left ear.""

Her voice broke.

"I was seventeen. I had no money, and my parents had thrown me out. But I never abandoned him.""

Daniel opened the hospital report.

"Can you explain Vanessa's involvement?""

Lucy took a breath.

"Vanessa was a volunteer at the shelter where I stayed after giving birth. She helped me find temporary housing and promised to help me get back on my feet.""

"What happened next?"" I asked.

"She offered to take Noah for a few days while I attended an employment program. She said she knew a family who could help.""

Lucy wiped her eyes.

"Then she disappeared with him.""

I felt sick.

"Did you report it?""

"Immediately. But Vanessa had convinced the hospital that I was unstable. She showed people documents saying I had voluntarily surrendered custody.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"Did you sign those documents?""

"No.""

"Did you ever see them?""

Lucy shook her head.

"I saw copies years later. The signature wasn't mine.""

I looked at Daniel.

The pattern was becoming familiar.

A forged signature.

A hidden arrangement.

A woman who used paperwork to make theft look legitimate.

"Did you know Emily?"" I asked.

Lucy's expression softened.

"She was the only person who believed me.""

She opened her folder and removed another photograph.

This one showed Emily sitting beside her in a small café.

Lucy's eyes were red in the picture, but she was smiling.

"Emily found me through the shelter records. She had been investigating Vanessa after discovering inconsistencies in the paperwork.""

"Why didn't she tell me?""

Lucy looked down.

"She was afraid.""

"Of Vanessa?""

"Of what Vanessa might do if she found out Emily was helping me.""

Daniel crossed his arms.

"Did Emily ever tell you where Noah was?""

Lucy hesitated.

Then she nodded.

"She said she had found him.""

My stomach tightened.

"Where?""

Lucy looked directly at me.

"Living with Vanessa.""

I stood so quickly my chair scraped against the floor.

"What?""

"Emily said Vanessa had brought him into her household under a different name.""

I remembered the photograph.

The baby.

The date.

The words on the back.

"Is Noah Brielle?""

Lucy shook her head.

"No. Brielle isn't my son.""

"Then where is he?""

Lucy closed her eyes.

"I don't know.""

The silence was unbearable.

Daniel asked, "When did you last hear from Emily?""

"Three weeks before she died.""

She reached into her bag and removed a folded note.

"She sent me this.""

I unfolded it.

Lucy,

I found the records. Noah is alive. Vanessa has been using a false identity for him, but I finally know where he is.

I need a little more time. I have to make sure the evidence is strong enough that she cannot take him away again.

Please don't lose hope.

Emily.

I stared at the paper.

"Did you ever receive another message?""

Lucy shook her head.

"Then I heard she had died.""

Her voice trembled.

"I tried contacting you. Vanessa answered the phone once. She told me Emily had never known anything about my son and that I should stop harassing her family.""

I looked at Daniel.

He was already making notes.

"We need to establish Noah's current identity and location.""

Lucy nodded.

"There's one more thing.""

She removed a small envelope from her folder.

"Emily gave me this before she died. She told me not to open it unless Vanessa started making moves against the house.""

Inside was a photocopy of an old birth certificate.

The child's name was Noah Hart.

But the name of the person listed as his legal guardian was Vanessa Cole.

A handwritten note appeared at the bottom.

*BIRTH RECORD ALTERED. ORIGINAL REGISTRATION AVAILABLE IN HOSPITAL ARCHIVES.*

Daniel stared at the document.

"Where did you get this?""

"Emily found it.""

He turned toward me.

"Marcus, if these records are genuine, Vanessa may have committed identity fraud and potentially child abduction.""

I looked at Lucy.

"Why did she come into my life?""

Lucy shook her head.

"I don't know.""

But then she remembered something.

"Emily told me Vanessa had asked about your house.""

My blood ran cold.

"What?""

"She said Vanessa was interested in the property before she even met you.""

Daniel stopped writing.

"Did Emily explain why?""

Lucy shook her head.

"No. But she said there was something inside the house Vanessa wanted.""

I thought about the metal box.

The forged sale documents.

The floorboards.

The letter.

Suddenly, it all connected.

Vanessa hadn't moved Maya out of her room because Brielle needed more space.

She had needed access to the floor.

And she had wanted the house sold before anyone discovered what Emily had hidden.

That evening, I returned home with Maya.

Vanessa's car was parked outside.

I immediately felt uneasy.

Inside, the living room was spotless.

Too spotless.

The boxes containing Maya's belongings had disappeared.

Her books were stacked neatly beside the stairs.

Her photographs were back on the hallway table.

And the music box pieces were gone from the kitchen counter.

"Vanessa?""

No answer.

I checked the upstairs hallway.

The guest room door was open.

Maya's belongings had been placed inside.

A new mattress sat against the wall.

A small desk stood beside the window.

It looked like someone had hurriedly prepared a room to make the situation appear reasonable.

Maya stood in the doorway.

"Did she put my things back?""

"Not in your bedroom.""

She nodded.

Then she noticed something on the guest-room desk.

A framed photograph.

It showed Vanessa, Brielle, and me at our wedding.

Maya looked away.

"I don't want to sleep here.""

"You won't have to.""

I walked toward my old office.

The door was open.

Vanessa's laptop was gone.

So were the folders I had seen the previous night.

I checked the filing cabinet.

Empty.

I turned toward the desk.

There was a small white envelope resting on the keyboard.

My name was written across it.

Inside was a single handwritten sentence.

*If you want to know why Emily hid the truth, ask Daniel what happened the week before she died.*

I read it twice.

Then my phone rang.

Daniel.

"Marcus, I just received something from the hospital archives.""

"What?""

"An original birth record.""

"Whose?""

He hesitated.

"Not Noah's.""

I gripped the phone.

"Then whose?""

"Emily's.""

I frowned.

"What does Emily's birth record have to do with this?""

Daniel's voice dropped.

"There's a second identity attached to her original hospital file.""

I looked toward the empty office.

"What identity?""

May you like

He answered quietly.

"Vanessa's.""
