THE BABY WASN’T THE ONLY LIE / Chapter 10 / 15

Chapter 10: The Daughter My Brother Had Hidden

“Marcus, don't go after him alone.””

Andrew's voice barely registered.

I was staring at the photograph of Noah.

My eight-year-old son was sitting in the back seat of a car, his cheeks wet with tears. The paper in his hands trembled.

*DAD, PLEASE FIND MY REAL FATHER.*

I called Ethan again.

Straight to voicemail.

I tried Vanessa.

No answer.

Then I called my mother.

“Mom, listen to me. Noah is missing. I need you to tell me everything you know about Ethan's daughter.””

Margaret began crying.

“Rebecca?””

“Yes. Who is she?””

There was a long silence.

Then my mother whispered, “She's the child Ethan had before he married Laura.””

“Why did nobody tell me?””

“Because she was adopted.””

“By whom?””

“I don't know.””

I looked at Rachel.

She was watching me carefully.

“Mom, I need her address.””

“I don't have it.””

“Then tell me what happened.””

Margaret took a shaky breath.

“Ethan was very young. He and a woman named Patricia had a daughter. They weren't married. Patricia died shortly after the birth, and Ethan said he couldn't raise the baby alone.””

I closed my eyes.

Another child.

Another adoption.

Another story my family had buried.

“Did Ethan know where Rebecca went?””

“Yes. He received letters for several years.””

“From whom?””

“The adoptive parents.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

“And he never told us?””

“He said he wanted to protect her.””

I almost laughed.

My brother's favorite excuse.

Protecting people.

Protecting children.

Protecting family.

Every lie had been wrapped in the same excuse.

“Mom, did Ethan ever bring Rebecca to our house?””

Margaret hesitated.

“Yes.””

“When?””

“When she was about six.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

“She came to a Christmas dinner. Ethan introduced her as the daughter of a business associate.””

I stared at the phone.

I remembered that Christmas.

A little girl with brown hair had sat beside Ethan.

I'd even given her a present.

A doll in a pink dress.

I remembered Maya asking whether the girl could come over again.

Ethan had said she lived too far away.

I had never questioned it.

“Did Vanessa know?””

“I think so.””

I ended the call.

Rachel stepped closer.

“Marcus, Rebecca has been searching for answers for years.””

“Why would she take Noah?””

“Because Ethan has been telling her a different story.””

“What story?””

Rachel looked at the photograph.

“He told Rebecca that you were responsible for what happened to her mother.””

I stared at her.

“That's insane.””

“Ethan told her that your family had taken everything from him. He said you had a perfect life while his children were scattered across different homes.””

I shook my head.

“I didn't know any of this.””

“I believe you.””

Andrew approached us.

“The police have the photograph and phone number. They're working on identifying the vehicle.””

“Can they track it?””

“They're trying.””

I turned toward Rachel.

“Do you know where Rebecca lives?””

She nodded.

“Near Columbus, Ohio. Her adoptive parents are Robert and Susan Bennett.””

I stopped.

“The Bennetts?””

Rachel nodded.

“Lily's parents?””

I felt the last pieces of the puzzle shift.

Lily.

The little girl who played with Maya.

The girl who had asked whether her real father had found her.

Rebecca had been connected to that family too.

I looked at Rachel.

“Are you telling me Lily and Rebecca are connected?””

“I'm telling you Ethan has been moving children between families and identities for years.””

Andrew interrupted.

“Marcus, I need you to stay focused. We need Noah's location.””

My phone buzzed.

A new message.

*You have one hour. Come to the old Hale warehouse. Don't bring police.*

I showed Andrew.

He shook his head.

“Absolutely not.””

“He has my son.””

“And that's why we don't walk into a trap.””

I stared at the message.

Then another photograph arrived.

Noah was now sitting beside a teenage girl.

She had dark hair and a small scar above her left eyebrow.

Rachel gasped.

“Rebecca.””

The girl was holding Noah's shoulder.

She looked frightened.

But she wasn't hurting him.

I zoomed in.

Behind them was a familiar brick wall.

I recognized it immediately.

The old warehouse belonged to Ethan's construction company.

It had been closed for years.

I looked at Andrew.

“That's where he's taking him.””

Andrew nodded.

“I'll contact the police.””

I turned toward Rachel.

“Can you identify Rebecca?””

“Of course.””

“Then you're coming with us.””

Andrew shook his head.

“Marcus—”

“She may be the only person who can convince that girl to let Noah go.””

We drove toward the warehouse with two police officers following at a distance.

The building stood behind an abandoned industrial lot.

Its windows were boarded up.

A single light glowed inside.

I stepped out of the car.

Andrew grabbed my arm.

“Wait.””

I looked at him.

“That's my son.””

“I know. But we do this carefully.””

A side door opened.

Rebecca appeared.

She was holding Noah's hand.

The boy looked exhausted.

“Dad!””

I took one step forward.

Rebecca immediately pulled him behind her.

“Don't come closer!””

I stopped.

“Rebecca, I'm Marcus.””

“I know who you are.””

“Please let Noah come to me.””

She shook her head.

“He said you would lie.””

“Who?””

“My father.””

I swallowed.

“Ethan?””

She nodded.

“He told me you stole everything from him. He said you took his children and pretended they were yours.””

I looked at Noah.

“Buddy, are you hurt?””

He shook his head.

Rebecca spoke before he could answer.

“I'm not going to hurt him.””

“I believe you.””

She looked surprised.

I continued.

“Rebecca, I don't know what Ethan told you. But I never knew you existed until today.””

Her eyes filled.

“He said you knew.””

“I didn't.””

“He said you were there when my mother died.””

“I wasn't.””

“He said you could have saved her.””

I took a breath.

“Your mother was Patricia, wasn't she?””

Rebecca nodded.

I looked at Rachel.

She was crying.

“Rebecca,” Rachel said softly, “your father has lied to you.””

Rebecca looked at her.

“Who are you?””

“My name is Rachel. I was your father's aunt-in-law before Laura died.””

Rebecca frowned.

“Laura?””

Rachel nodded.

“Your father told you about her?””

Rebecca looked down.

“He said she was another woman who took his family away.””

Rachel stepped forward.

“That isn't true.””

Rebecca began crying.

Then a man's voice came from inside the warehouse.

“Rebecca! Bring the boy inside!””

Ethan emerged from the shadows.

He looked furious.

I stepped toward him.

“Let Noah go.””

Ethan shook his head.

“You've ruined everything.””

“No. You did.””

He pointed at Rebecca.

“She deserves to know who you are.””

Rebecca turned toward him.

“Dad, you said Marcus was my enemy.””

Ethan stopped.

I looked at him.

“She's your daughter. Why are you using her?””

His expression hardened.

“Because you don't understand what you've taken from me.””

I shook my head.

“I didn't take anything.””

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“You got the house. The wife. The children. The life I was supposed to have.””

I stared at him.

“Is that why you switched the records?””

He didn't answer.

Then Noah suddenly ran.

He slipped away from Rebecca and sprinted toward me.

I caught him in my arms.

“Dad!””

I held him tightly.

Ethan lunged forward.

But police officers emerged from behind the building.

“Ethan Hale! Step away from the child!””

He froze.

Rebecca dropped her hands.

For the first time, she looked like a frightened teenager instead of someone carrying an impossible burden.

One officer escorted Noah toward Andrew.

Another approached Ethan.

I held my son against my chest.

“It's okay, buddy. I've got you.””

Noah buried his face in my jacket.

“Dad, he said you weren't my real father.””

I kissed his forehead.

“Nothing changes how much I love you.””

But Noah pulled back.

His expression was serious.

“Dad?””

“Yes?””

“He showed me a picture of my real mother.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“What picture?””

Noah looked toward Ethan.

May you like

Then he whispered:

“She was the woman who gave birth to Maya.””
